A secondary schoolmate called for the inspection of a Mercedes-Benz he intends to buy for his dad. We physically inspected the car and as well test-drove it; it passed the checks.

The customs paper attached to it is also genuine, and it corresponds with the VIN on the driver's door post and windscreen, but on scanning the car with a car scanner, the VIN came out different.

It must be a stolen car or one without a customs duty, but the seller wants to sell it as the one with a customs duty.

Have you ever experienced such a scenario?

If not that scanner was taken along and was used on the car, the car would have been paid for. That shows that it is essential one uses a scanner on any car one intends to buy in other to avoid a vehicle that its vin has been tampered with for whatever reason.

When should you check a car’s VIN number?

When purchasing a used vehicle, you should always check the vehicle identification number beforepayment. Make sure that the printed VIN number on the vehicle registration document corresponds to the number stamped onto the car’s chassis, as well as any additional plates on the vehicle.

VINs, chassis numbers, and engine numbers

The VIN number and chassis number are the same thing – the name ‘chassis number’ simply refers to the part of the car the VIN is stamped to. However, the engine number is something entirely different.

Engines are not attached to the car and can be changed, so there will be both a VIN/chassis number (which will never be removed or changed) and an engine number for every car. The engine number denotes the size and power output the engine produces.

Having a separate engine number means that if the engine needs to be replaced, it can be done so without the car needing to be scrapped. The car would be assigned a new engine number to correspond with the new part, alongside the existing VIN/chassis number.

Why VIN numbers are important

As we’ve already mentioned, VIN numbers can tell us a lot of information about a car. Therefore, they are integral to helping cut down car crimes, such as theft and the buying/selling of stolen vehicles. Aside from this, manufacturers use VIN numbers to handle warranty claims and recalls.

Before you purchase a used car, you should check that the VIN number on the chassis is the same as that shown in the registration documents. It’s best to check for the VIN number in as many areas as possible to ensure they all match. Some car thieves may swap out the VIN from one vehicle to another. This is known as VIN cloning and it is highly illegal.

Under no circumstances should there ever be any discrepancies when it comes to the VIN number on a car. The system is supposed to be clear, so if you come across one that doesn’t match, do not purchase the car.

This is the vin that the professional scanner pulled out and it differs from the one on the customs duty paper, windscreen driver side, and driver side door post.

You have no right to come to the public and declare a car was stolen just because your computer told you VIN don't match.

If you can properly identify the seller and it happens he's genuine and there are other reasons for this apparent discrepancy, I would sue you for defamation

It will make more sense if you explain or prove otherwise in a case a car carries VIN in different places different from its factory VIN. Guess you haven't heard of VIN tampering which is mostly done when a car is stolen.

Even the seller couldn't say anything nor rant because he knew the big problem he could eventually get into.

Always run VIN check with a good scanner on the car you intend to buy.

Smart people also do it for stolen car thats why is good investigate well before you buy a car
Two reasons why dealer tamper with vin is sometimes they want to sell Nigeria used car as tokumbo, or a heavy accidented car.
Seen two vin in a car don't necessarily mean its stolen car....

In this case, it is not said to be tokunbo nor is it an accidented car. In fact, it was said to be used but unregistered.

Car Engine may have been changed.

That won't make the VIN change. That will only make its engine number change.

Not sure change of ECU can make the VIN to change.

Experts in the house should talk on that.

As for me, every VIN number is different, and a VIN number will not change during the lifetime of a vehicle. Think of your car's VIN number like its DNA—it's unique to your vehicle, doesn't change, and can provide valuable information about the vehicle.

Hiding unregistered doesn't have to go as far as altering the VINs on those two places.

Why not give reasons why a car scanner will churn out a different result for a supposed clean car instead of ranting. It's really difficult to have genuine conversation with some of you without being combative

Are you sure you want to learn or remain cynical? You have an already made argument for everyone trying to prowess a solution to why the DNA is manipulated. Obviously, you just want to believe it's stolen and force your points down our throat

There are lots of reasons a car VIN be manipulated, stolen is one of it not all of it. Let's not rush to throw out blind judgement it's called cynicism

Despite the subject, please read the original post stating two options.

You quoted a post in which I responded to someone who said vin could have changed because the engine was changed.

I quoted the fact over 4 folks have lined up different reasons apart stolen and you are arguing it with them and going back to your earlier stolen claim.

I'm not disputing it might be a stolen car, but we learn to unlearn. I logged In to Reddit just now to see why VIN can be tampered with and I saw many folks having different reasons. Stolen is one of it not all of it.

Not sure you are correct with the accusation either; STOLEN used in the subject was used to catch attention.

As other people have said, it might be for other reasons and I'm not disputing that.

If you were you the one knowing that about the car, will you still go ahead buying it?
