Convert what i typed to naira, and it is still the same thing.

The people who started importing Tokunboh cars obviously cashed out.

Today, everybody knows the road to Copart and IAAI.

Men dey use 100k sef sell Corolla.

Obi's time was more favorable
Okay, which is easier, to make 1 million Naira today or to make 1 million Naira 14-17 years ago?

If we stick to trading as the niche, I would choose 14 to 17 years ago.

If any of my family members wanted to go school outside Nigeria , I won’t open my eyes and have them go to a country where they still had military coup in year 2019. My point is the place is not a country with a stable political climate like Nigeria or Ghana that has been having constant change of power since the early 2000’s .

Businesses seek profit not social good. If the Govt made the conditions such that producing locally would maximize his profit, then that's what he would have done.

Apart from that, I don't believe his rise is all uhuru, that's why he's been vague about it. He would have received some patronage from Govt or Govt linked sources along the way. That goes for 95% of Nigerian billionaires. The Nigerian environment hardly allows for a clean rise.

It's the same for most people who became billionaires in Nigeria. There is a big gap from being a millionaire to becoming majority shareholder in a bank. It's not even what the likes of Obi Cubana can point to at this point

But he kept quiet about that part because it won't align with his profile being sold to the public as this honest clean anti establishment man who made it on his own

Let a military govt put you in charge of Tin can for 1 week alone

Ordinary custom boys dey set for life if they man border for 1year

One of the stains on Atiku was that he became a billionaire from his time at Customs and from diverting public funds into private hands at privatization

BlueRayDick:

I think Nigerians generally look at wealthy people , size them up and assign billionaire or millionaire status to them as the spirit leads .

For example u will see a man who has a viable business like haulage/logistics engaging in the business of carrying products for multinationals like Cadbury , Unilever etc . The man can decide to buy let’s say 150 trucks at once with each truck costing like 30 million naira . It’s typical for Nigerians to assume the man is a billionaire cos he just bought trucks worth 4.5 billion .

What u won’t know is the man may have gotten an asset financing facility from his bank the terms of which he is expected to contribute just 30% while the bank contributes 70% to the purchase of the trucks . (That 1.35 billion baba dropped sef is almost all his sweat of many years ). You as an outsider will not know these details , u wouldn’t even know the trucks are registered in the name of the bank/customer to show they are jointly owned until the man eventually liquidates his facility if business is good and no unforeseen circumstance changes the tide of things .

Trust the MD/CEO of the company , he will surely live up to the hype and make people believe he’s as rich as people are assuming in the society . It’s when the loan goes bad and AMCON takes over we will start knowing baba no really hold like that

You know as e dey go. Being a billionaire to buy majority shares no be small matter sha

On Sudan, and why (Northern) Nigerians study there—a response to some of the condescending, sensationalising and unmistakably prejudiced hot takes trending:

1. Sudan isn’t the collapsible banana republic you assumed it is. It’s not just what you see on CNN. It’s had over a century of health professions education, long before Nigeria had its first medical school, and they have an evolved medical education system that attracts undergraduate and postgraduate medical students from across the world. They had had a university for more than half a century before Nigeria had one.

2. Northern Nigeria and Sudan haven’t only had historical interactions and cultural similarities, but Sudanese tertiary institutions also offer superior specialised training in various fields of Islamic studies. For instance, Nigeria’s former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, obtained a master’s degree in Islamic Jurisprudence at a Sudanese university in the 90s—and he’s one of the smartest public servants Nigeria has ever had. This Sudanese education you’ve portrayed with contempt guided him in reforming Islamic banking in Nigeria during his stewardship at the apex bank.

3. If your aim was to treat Sudan as a hub of substandard education in a country that rushes to French-speaking Cotonou for months-long bachelor’s degrees, that argument won’t hold water. Your stereotypical point about Sudan being a breeding ground of religious extremism is also your consumption of the wrong news channels. The last time I checked, some of the most notorious international terrorists we’ve seen were radicalised in the West, including Nigerian-born Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who’s studying at UCL when he fell apart.

4. A few months ago, Nigerian students were rescued from Ukraine, a European country, and we didn’t see these epistles about the whys of their choices of unstable and war-prone countries to study. FYI, Ukraine is a third-world country of blue-eyed, blonde-haired people. Or is your outrage because Sudan is an African or Muslim country?

5. Even as I wrote this, there were still Nigerians from all parts of the country studying in the war-torn Ukraine and Russia, two countries locked in the deadliest war in the world right now. Why aren’t you alarmed by the presence of Nigerians in Ukraine, a country that has been at war for decades? I know this because I have friends still studying there. So, let me ask you exactly what you asked northerners: “What kind of people are these people?”

6. You know quite well the reason Nigerians rush to study abroad—this fear of studying a 5-year programme for about a decade. Ironically, Sudan, for the Nigerians there, isn’t just for the affordability of the schools—a lot of our students in Sudan are from comfortable middle-class families that pay huge sums in tuition and other fees to give their children decent education at private institutions in a culturally familiar foreign country close to their home.

7. And, yes, this environment matters to some. The alienation of adapting to a new environment isn’t an easy cultural dislocation for some, and Sudan offers these northern Muslim students that avenue to study without the culture shocks or civilisational crisis, which even cosmopolitan black students experience in the West.

8. I think some of you should take your time and read up on Sudan. If you can’t write Ukraine off as just a place of war, that ancient African country too deserves the benefit of the doubt. It’s more than its war. There are people elsewhere who also wonder why there are still people in Nigeria, believing the entire country is at war. This isn’t even the time to point fingers. Also consider that in Obi's time, it was easier to hit the million dollar mark because the competition was less

When i was young, one of the importers of royal furniture was a man called Ausken. He lived in Festac then, and there was little competition for him. He could have easily hit 2 million dollars in his time

Today, go to Alaba, and see how everywhere is flooded with Chinese furniture.

The competition is too high for you to cruise to 1 billion.

Maybe na competition sef make Obi leave Tincan, go open Fidelity bank sef
Ausken Royal Furniture at Pako bus stop??

While i know that Sudan had good schools, it doesn't take away the fact that it was marred by insecurities.

Will subsidy removal lead to further fall in the Naira to dollar rate? I'm thinking importers of fuel having to source for the dollar in the black market will put more pressure on the dollar.

What do you guys think?

Meanwhile Federal workers on this thread should do giveaway for the house. smiley

The first point he said “ Sudan isn’t a collapsible Banana republic you assumed it is ……it is not just what we see on CNN“. 😁

A country that fought an ethnic-religious themed civil war which lasted for 50 years is not a collapsible banana republic ?

Sometimes I really wonder why people just decide to be on the defensive even at risk of sounding ridiculous like that Gimba guy . Sudan has always had insecurity issues before Southern Sudan got independence and is still a politically unstable country even after Southern Sudan independence . That’s a very obvious stuff and not some conspiracy theory being sold by CNN or other foreign media .

Sudan and Islamist extremism are 5 and 6. So, no one cares whether they've the best medical schools in the world.

The country will only attract extremists being one of the headquarters for Islamist extremists in the world.

The same us that were complaining about profiling by the defunct SARS and the attendant consequences that followed suit sees no problem in labelling just because the tag is for others. We can pretend to be objective but our bias will always shine through, I'm not fooled and I know who my friends are.
