Subsidy removal: Tinubu backs Buhari, Falana condemns price hike

13th May 2016

A former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has described the decision of the President Buhari-led Federal Government to remove petrol subsidy as courageous.

The government, through the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, on Wednesday, announced the removal of the subsidy on petrol, pegging the upper limit at N145 per litre from N86.50k.

In a statement in Lagos on Thursday, Tinubu said though the decision was a difficult one, it would ultimately become beneficial to the generality of the people instead of enriching the pockets of a few Nigerians, who enjoyed the fraud of the subsidy regime.

Osinbajo: We’ve saved N1.4trn by not paying fuel subsidy

AUGUST 25, 2016

Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo says the federal government has saved N1.4 trillion for not paying oil subsidy.

Speaking in Kano on Thursday during the third day of the 15th Joint Planning Board and National Council on development meeting, Osinbajo urged Nigerians not to lose faith in Buhari’s administration, saying the president would fix the economy.

“With the deregulation of the downstream petroleum sector, there has been a significant increase in the availability of petrol throughout the country for the savings of N1.4 trillion on subsidy payments alone,” Osinbajo said.

i have seen seriousness in Government to remove subsidy but we are been told Dangote refinery is not ready.... hmmmmm

i think that the government is playing us... if they can be this serious the that refinery is ready.. this is the game... remove subsidy when people complain, tell them "you know we are importing it, go buy it else where" after a month or two refinery begin operation so buyers(filling station have to pay over 700 they are paying before). so no one will skin Dangote alive....

we know it should be ready like july or soon and why did did government push the removal of subsidy to when Dangote refinery will be ready.

it is well, i kuku like the removal....

The biggest scam that ever happened to Nigeria is Buhari. This man promised to revamp the refineries before assuming office and he expected us to forgive him. Buhari God will Judge you for all the atrocities you've caused in this country.

That's what I keep telling proponents of "subsidy must go" who rely on dangote refinery. Let it be up and running before bringing subsidy removal that is dependent on it to the table else 22% inflation rate would look like a 1990 stuff.

Nigeria is budgeting and spending billions of naira in PMS subsidy, so removing that subsidy means subjecting ordinary Nigerians to untold hardship.

The best bet is to partially remove the subsidy by 50%. When Dangote refinery becomes fully operational, they can analyze the feasibility of totally removing the subsidy.

This country is just so unfortunate as we have the worst of us leading us. Buhari started talking about diversifying Nigeria's economy in 2015. 8 years later, over 80% of Nigeria's FX earnings come from petrodollars.

Dangote has fuked them up. They put all their hopes on his refinery not knowing it can't be completed until 2025. Who knows they might even extend the date again to 2030 cheesy cheesy

If Dangote is not careful, that refinery might end up as white elephant project. He is already paying 700 million as interest on loans and has continued to borrow endlessly. He has even exceeded his limit for borrowings yet completion date is not in sight!

I don't see subsidy being removed, especially not when a questionable and unpopular government like that of Tinubu takes over. Obi might even contemplate it considering he still enjoys massive support and control of social media narrative.

If Tinubu is inaugurated as president and he dares remove subsidy, his government will collapse within 6 months.

The thing is, whoever takes over come may 29, subsidy has to go

Look, let's put politics aside. Yes, Nigerians are going to be angry, and yes, if Tinubu removes subsidy, his government may even collapse within days. But at the end of the day, the new government is going to be faced with the fact that the subsidy money is growing at a rate that is unsustainable.

We knew this as early as the 1990's. But we have been lying to ourselves. 2012, in my opinion, was our last chance to make a clean break from subsidy. We did not listen, some of us woke up and were shouting that it had to go then, including some people who did not care for PDP as well as some pro-PDP supporters then, Nigerians said no.

At the end of the day, it is either we remove subsidy, or the situation would force us to remove subsidy.

There is a reason why all three main candidates said they would remove subsidy. They have seen the light, and they know it can't go on.

It's quite giggling that all we grasp on in the air is promises....
Dangote never made any price better ...working with the govt and internationally owned corporates to become richer....
Now he needs money like the money is one man's own....and not the tax payers
Ask, if he makes loses, who pays while he struggles to keep his status quo....?!
Yet!, you see imprisoned minds search for freedom in other men's travails......
None came to make it better.....

In 10 years, we will be the poorer and unfortunately still be like this or worse off.....

Let's pray... let's unite wisely and know that there's something better ...this we know.
God give us the strength .

Government officials embezzling the money made for public projects has been the reason Nigeria is where it is today and not because of subsidy. Dangote should have gone for a European build.

The initial cost would have been higher, but quality would be better and time frame for completion would have been more certain.

It seems he went for a predominantly Indian managed option.

Indians are not reknowned for being the best in delivering this kind of mega project. Now, the project will probably cost far more.

If this report is correct, the Chinese have now been invited to help complete the project. They might want to start start some designs and fabrications afresh.

I suspect the Indians have made some big errors with the project and can't find a way out.

Which kind wahala is this now

And Nigerians have put all their economic hope in Dangote refinery.

This is going to make Tinubu's already challenging task even harder.

It's very obvious that Aliko Dangote and his cronies(Dantata, Babangida, OBJ and others) who have substantial shares in the Dangote company are one of nigeria's biggest problem.

1) Dangote expertise is in cement and food production. I don't think he's well grounded in the technicalities of commercial oil processing. Why take a gamble on an enterprise you are not well versed in and that has the potential to set back a country?

2) Why would the Federal government support the building from the scratch a new refinery whereas we have refineries in the south and north sitting dormant and crying for a revamp. I am very well sure that if the whole billions spent on the Dangote refinery had been invested in our old dormant refineries, they should have been producing finished petrol by now and then the subsidy removal wouldn't have had effect on poor masses. I have personally gone to that refinery at ibeju lekki,(passed by it)... the amount of money they have sank in there can lift 2/3rd of Nigerians out of perpetual poverty.

Brothers and sisters, I can categorically tell you that even if another 3 billion dollars is pumped into that "ghost" refinery, it will still not push out refined fuel come 2030. TAKE WHAT I JUST TOLD YOU TO THE BANK

Sir, those refineries were built with the tech available those days and that's why they keep having problems maintaining it. So saying they are out of date in in order. Also bear in mind those refineries were built for a certain population and with population explosion we are witnessing, they simply won't serve.

If subsidy is not removed (even if gradually), the next government will have an impossible task on its hands. The only option will be tax. Everything under the sky will have to be taxed sad

When Tinubu comes in and sees what's on ground, he will wonder if this is the worst job he has ever taken on. I also think massive corruption is going on right now.

I hope this Dangote refinery report is not true. It's dampened my optimism for the prospects of the incoming administration.

Even if it becomes functional, I doubt it can alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. Dangote has not been able to make affordable cement available to Nigerians which has increased cost of housing in every city....why should we trust him with making petroleum available??

Dangote has built his wealth on the government had out, OBJ /Atiku/El Rufai privatisation program gave him the cement factories for nothing, and now his refinery is nothing without government handouts and subsidies.
