I came across a post some days back about a nairalander who caught a live cobra in his farm. But what got my attention was the picture of the cobra climbing the tree. I kept on staring at the picture with so many questions in my mind.

So I decided to ask our learned and more exposed colleagues here to know what can make a snake climb trees, walls etc without falling off (since it doesn't have legs nor hands).

Friction is the reason for it. Whenever there is friction, a body can move comfortably on a surface, the snake's underbelly forms a friction with the bark of the tree. The same snake will find it difficult to crawl on a smooth floor tiles or on a wall because there is no friction. U are able to walk on the floor because the soles of your feet form a friction with the hard surface, your shoes form the same thing. Without this friction, you will trip off.

The ventral scales (found on the underside of the snake) create small ridges and grooves on the snakes body that they angle on the surface they are climbing, this helps to create traction while they use their muscles to slowly move up the wall.
