With this we can do a rough estimate to determine the vol of GTBANK you hold in your portfolio.

A quick math...

Assuming that V is the vol you hold in GTB, then V x N2.80 (ref: YE, 2022 final div cash flow)= GDA (Gross dividend amount) paid.

Let GDA= y
Then y--0.1y= N4,250,086.04 (Note that 0.1y connotes 10% WHT on the value of y)
So 0.9y= N4,250,086.04
Hence y= N4,250,086.04/0.9= N4,722,317.82222

Therefore y(GDA) which is your Gross div amount= N4,722,317.82222.

But V x N2.80= y (GDA)
So V= N4,722,317.82222/2.80= 1,686,542 unit approximately.

While you may have bought some of your equity stake in GT earlier, this gives us a clue of your holding.

I,686,542 unit of GTBANK.
...now that's quite a lot! wink cheesy cool

I dare say that you have built for yourself a great source of passive income... especially if you also hold similar stakes in other 1st tier lenders and/or blue-chip companies.

Kudos bro!

240,000 units bought during the IPO in 2001 for N1.2 million would have grown to about 1,700,000 units through bonus shares.

You have spoken well.

Indeed it is an indisputable fact that dividend cash flow from a well articulated investment in equities (possibly DCA with an efficient trade set-up) is a great way of building/generating solid passive income and laying a strong foundation to financial freedom.

May that be our lot!

Well, as a trader, if he had sold when the price got to N26, he would have been far better off, with a gain of N15m, that is if he bought the shares @N17, last October.

I want to believe he has upto 2,000,000 units in order to earn such dividend.

No I don't think so.
...if he had up to 2M unit of GTBANK, his div cash flow would've been over N5M (somewhere in the range of N5,040,000)

Look at that calculation again. ...it's quite simple. wink cheesy cool

That estimate of 1,686,542 unit may not be his exact holding, but it sure will be in that range...
the discrepancy (if any) will only be in the last 2 or 3 digit. (that 42 or 542 unit)
Might be btw 1,686, (540-550) unit.

It is well.

Rental income is overrated as a source of passive income at retirement.

Income is erratic, tenants will owe you, spend money in order to eject tenants, rental income will be used for repairs and maintenance, government will levy you when you renovate the property.

It is damn too lousy

Unfortunately that is the route known by majority of the population

I agree. Rental income has too much wahala from my family's experience. One of our troublesome tenants in the past destroyed our property and left faeces on the property before vacating. Nigerians can be wicked so we don't bother with renting out property anymore. All my Naira income from my usual hustle I simply plough back into stocks of all the FUGAZ banks (except FBHN) in equal measure and just chill for dividends. Price movements don't affect me much, only the pain of Naira devaluation.

Before you get N1 million as rental income you would have spent 50k on phone calls, data and fuel, 100k on maintenance, 100k for the property manager, 100k as emergency reserve.

Student hostel, warehouse, event centers, shopping complex, car park are okay.

But residential is a big no no no

Hello fellow investors.
I have 150,000 units of gtco. But I just received N378,000 from Datamax as dividend. That is 2.52 per share.

I use meritrade for investing

But I thought gtco paid 2.8, which should be N420,000.

What am I missing guys?

Not sure, he bought all his holdings at once, more like something bought over the years, naira cost averaging and dividend reinvestment.

Could have also gotten a loan to buy more units at N17 last year with the hope of using his dividends to liquidate the loan

GT has tried over the years. Their GDR issued in 2007 now yields after tax deduction a dividend yield of 21% based on total dividend for year 2022. This is factoring all the bonusses issued. That is just purely based on invested capital. I think issuing or not issuing bonus has no fundamental benefit. But just a deceptive feeling of having more numbers of shares which may or may not translate to increased returns. The best they can do is just to remain sound, like not loosing investors money like some banks did after all the PO rounds.

Hello house

This is my portfolio 10 years ago, I abandoned it for the last 10 years. I will like to start aggressively growing it
The goal is to at least start earning decent dividends (700k-2m per year) in the next 12 months. And also a bit of growth as well.

One question though, what happened to Nigerian Breweries, it was trading like #160 back then

Will appreciate any advice

Why did you abandon the market for 10 solid years.

You will need to sell some of the dead stocks in your portfolio and then have a weekly or monthly investment plan.

Your present portfolio valuation is barely N1m (give or take) and you want to start earning at least 700k in dividends within 12 months? This is still possible but be prepared to invest an additional 6m-8m for that to happen.

BTW, life and Nigeria happened to Nigerian Breweries!

Thank you @emmanuelewumi and @mendes911: for your insights. I will take the loss on those dead stocks. my plan is to buy a sizeable qty of DangCement. FBHN, MTNN, UBA, ACCESS, and Zenith. Is this a good plan ?

I am really open to any advice on good picks, the lesson i learned was even after 10 years there were some solid stocks in that humble portfolio of mine that stood the test of time. I pulled my current listing from CSCS and @emmanuelwumi, can you kindly point to ones to get off. i will also appreciate some ideas for a weekly plan i can follow to grow my portfolio. I can invest some good money to get to my target dividend. Thank you all

This is a good start for a comeback!

1. Out of the 8 stocks, 2 are write offs: Dunlop and Union homes....... they're dead.

2. The remaining 6 are good: FBNH, NB, Betaglass, Dangsugar Cornerstone and Univinsure.

3. You'll need to register with a broker, Morgan Capital Securities Limited, my recommendation.
4. You'll have to fill forms for the Registrars of the ones you have to collect your outstanding Dividends and for future ones.
5. Your new broker will assist you to transfer your stocks to your trading portfolio, whereby you can commence trading, be depositing more money and also consolidating//buying more shares.
6. All the stocks you mentioned are good but I'll advice you dont concentrate on banking alone........you can pick from one or two other sectors as well.
7. If you have time, try and flip back to some pages of this thread to learn more and have basic knowledge...
8. There are books to read, will be good if you can download some and read.
9. Define the type of investor you wish to be..
10. Always ask questions.........you can't just jump into the market to buy, there are times to buy, when the market is in bearish mode, the stock prices used to come down a bit at these periods, those could be good times to pick fundamentally sound stocks.
