That’s because those are not kings. They are warrant chiefs that the British elevated. You guys don’t have true royalties.

In Nigeria:
—it’s Sultan of Sokoto in the North.

—It’s Ooni of Ife in the South.

Even the Nigerian state itself out Sultan and Ooni at the topmost level and the rest of the kings follow.

Oba of Benin is very well respected by people from Benin and some SS area but they are minority when you factor in the number. Obi of Onitsha would have easily also come into the picture but he’s not a true royalty based on what Ibos always say that they don’t value their kings.


However generally, people don’t usually respect kings that much in the South like it used to be back in the days.

Nigeria constitution recognized two Kings in Nigeria which are: Ooni of Ife and sultan of Sokoto..and I guess constitution of a country is the powerful law of a country.
