But how do you guys cook chicken and tripe altogether?

How will you be able to taste each flavour when cooked altogether?

Hahahaha........

Well.....i guess our taste bud is used to that already........

Different varieties of meat end up adding more sweetness to the soup........

7. Braai. I don't know what you guys call it, but I believe it's some sort of a barbecue.. It goes well with pap, chakalaka, and some salad... I personally prefer it with cold pap.. There's something about that cold pap and braai.. grin grin grin

What's that is the bowl lined with cloth

That's their dishes. Which one be local dishes?
Those dishes somehow appears a bit foreign to me. I couldn't point out one outstanding native dish. Well, their dishes

IkeIgboNiile:

Many indigenous dishes in Nigeria can be prepared without meat or fish. Here in the east, there are a dozen local dishes that have no business with meat or fish.
Also i never said having goat meat classifies a meal as white people food. I mean they don't have local dishes that can be prepared with onions, maggi, theme and other foreign condiments that Africans got from our association with the white man.

I get your point. The same food you say are cooked without meat or fish would classify as salads. I'm non-igbo and fell in love with Abacha so I get where you are coming from. But the fact that people don't cook the way we cook doesn't mean that their foods are "foreign". They use what they have to cook what they can eat.

So what would qualify as "native"? These foods are cooked with items readily found in South Africa. The OP mentioned pap and samp and we (Nigerians) are already criticizing them that it's not like our pap.

Things like fish, prawns, crayfish, and snail are not regarded as native food here in SA... We may eat them, but they're not South African native foods.
Segzy19:
Rubbish foods!

Everything is pap and meat! They hardly eat seafoods (fish, snail, prawn, crayfish etc)...

What you guys talk of soup, what are you referring to? Because I keep seeing some of you mentioning soup over and over again.

I've never eaten Nigerian food before.

Na "rich" people na hin fit afford assorted meats o. And most of what you describe is mostly southern Nigeria style "local" food. I'm sure if you see local food from northern Nigeria, you go hesitate before you try am. Let's not forget that "local" food for some Nigerian na dog meat that many other Nigerians will run away from eating.

Most Nigerians here sound a bit ignorant

Expecting south Africa to have similar food as our's and even getting surprised they are not eating swallows etc

like come on South Africa and Nigeria are very far from each other, So we really don't have much in common. Most of our tropical crops here too can't be grown in south Africa, there are some difference in our weather, climate and vegetations, hence most crops found here are not common there.

We can only expect some level of similarities in
our food with our west African brothers.

Southies are meat, bread and pap people grin

Don't know how to describe it using terms that you will understand. It's often eaten by dipping our "swallow" in it to make them easy to swallow. What would qualify as soup for your Southies, would be peppersoup. Examples of soups that most people here are referring to are Egusi soup, Ogbono soup, bang soup, Afang, Atama, Edikaikong, ewedu etc. They are mostly semi liquid and we dip swallows in them before we swallow

Completely agree with the bolded. Many people don't understand that despite being on the same African continent, there is a huge difference between us in West Africa and folks in Southern Africa.

Even though I've never seen Nigerian food in real life, I've seen some in few of your movies, on YouTube and here on nairaland... That thing looks like mashed potatoes... You even call it swallow because you don't chew it, you just swallow, meaning it's way too soft to chew.

Your side dishes always seem too oily and what surprised me is that you guys can cook three different types of meat in one pot at the same time.. How are you guys able to taste each flavour of the meat when cooked altogether?

I once watched a video whereby a Nigerian was cooking goat, chicken, and fish altogether and I was like whaaaatπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Person is saving gas .lol

11. Boerewors. It's a type of a sausage too, it comes in different flavours... My favourite.. tongue tongue tongue... You can braai, or fry it and eat it with pap along with some tomato gravy and a variety of veggies on the side, or you can make a boerewors stew and eat it with rice, samp, or even macaroni... I used to like eating a lot of it back in varsity... grin grin grin
this is the only South African food I’ve ate since I arrived trust me it’s phenomenal I had it at monte casino in joburg for the first time and I’ve been hooked ever since. Still waiting for my Benoni friend to hook me up with Pap ..
