Finally, My Car Got Fixed With Just A Reset; Car Owners Learn From My Experience by Cation25(m): 4:34pm On May 26, 2023 |
Here is my earlier tread regarding the fault my Camry 012 developed, https://www.nairaland.com/7691025/camry-012-jerk-when-changingSome car gurus, like xperiencelove, Jimts, etc. gave me their professional suggestions on the possible cause of the issue and solution. So, I took my car out for diagnosis and repair. The first "gear specialist" told me the gear has developed faults and needed to be replaced. He totalled everything, including his workmanship to be 450k. I left there unconvinced, went to the second person, and he diagnosed the car and told me the gear sensor is faulty and some other things. He told me he will rectify the issue at the sum of 150k. I was still unconvinced, so I went to another rewirer, he diagnose the car and told me the machine was pointing out the gear sensor, and that I should take the car to my mechanic to replace the sensor(he failed to mention which particular gear sensor). So I took the car to my mechanic, and after allowing the car to cool, he cleaned all the sensors, still the issue persist. So, I called another gear specialist at Ladipo. He told me it is the valve body, and I need to change it. So we booked an appointment. Prior to that, I met someone in the church who referred a gear specialist/rewirer to me at Ladipo. So, I booked an appointment with that guy too. And, following my spirit leads, I asked the other specialist who suggested the valve body has developed faults to wait until the following day. I did that to meet with the other guy first to hear his own suggestions or findings. When I finally meet this new guy(one young guy), he drove the car around and told me he will fix it but it will cost me 60k. So, we bargained and finally settled at 30k. He initially told me he will need to allow the car to cool for a minimum of 6 hours b4 he will open the gearbox, and that the car will be ready the next day. So I said okay. Later, he told me to enter the car and let's drive it again. We drove it a few distances then he parked and fixed his machine in the car. He carried out a TRANSMISSION ADAPTATION RESET and that solve the whole issue. This same thing was suggested to me by Jimts AutoJando here, but since I don't have the device to do it, I had to allow those guys to have their way. I wanted to still bargain the initially agreed price(30k) but he declined that we already had an agreement. I was like something you did that did not take you 5 mins, he said "na my work." lol. Guys, this issue affected my car fuel consumption seriously. Besides, the car doesn't move smoothly or speed as it use to. But since the rewirer guy reset the transmission adaption, the car is back to normal. I took out time to narrate my experiences so other car owners can learn from them. Those mechanics and rewire guys are ready to milk you dry if you don't shine your eyes. Again, don't totally trust your mechanic, irrespective of your relationship with them. Try to verify things from 2 or 3 others before agreeing to most of their suggestions. Thank you, xperiencelove, Jimts AutoJando, etc., for your suggestions and advice. To be honest, you have a point. However, it is necessary to understand the original reason why the transmission behaved the way it did. In most cases, it is as a result of clogged oil filter which OP has changed. The clogged oil filter will cause dirt/ingress to wedge between sliding valves with valve bodies or between solenoids valves and their bores and so one. Once the ECT memory records that some solenoids are drawing more current than usual due to stickiness of some sort, it CAN DEACTIVATE that solenoid completely and change the shift points of the transmission. It will use alternate solenoids to try and achieve the same purpose but at the expense of shift quality. It is more like a failsafe mechanism to protect the transmission from damage. Now, if this is caught early enough(which i hope is the case for OP), a simple oil change with oil filter replacement will solve the problem "MECHANICALLY" but nothing changes in the ECT memory until an adaptation reset is done. In many cases, this often times solves the problem completely. In my experience, I've seen cases where the problem returns but won't be as severe as it was before. We continue to reset the transmission memory until this doesn't happen again. This will give ample time for all the ingress in the bores to come out. In our own case, we would not charge the customer the second or third time for the reset. AutoJando 7 Likes |

AutoJando Nice point Sir.. In any case, at least with the cars I have owned, the gear system is a closed one.. That's why a car can be driven for years and its gear oil will still be looking as pink and smelling as sweet as the day it was put in.... For something to clog the filter so bad that it triggers an error means that some mechanism in the gear is slowly being shaved by another mechanism, giving rise to particles that get caught in the filter..Or the gear's closed system has been compromised, letting foreign objects in.. Moreso, I would think that a proper way to attack this issue is to get to its root.. By finding out what blocked the oil filter in a supposedly closed system, what damage that block has done, instead of just draining and replacing oil and the filter. 1 Like |

Your point is very valid. Yes, the transmission fluid is a closed loop network from the tranny to the radiator and back to the tranny. Ideally, no foreign object enters this closed system. What we need to take into account is that the friction discs (or fibers as street mechos like to call them) wear with time and usage. Just like brake pads and shoe brakes, these items are made of friction materials that are subject to wear and tear as they perform their function. However, unlike brake pads that wear out and leave the inner wells of your rims with dust and gunk, the worn out material from the friction disc mixes with the oil in the tranny and pollutes it. This is why manufacturers recommend a fluid change/flush at a given interval. Some will say 50,000 miles, some will say 75,000 while some can be as high as 100,000. The OEMs knew beforehand that the ingress from the friction lining material will eventually clog the filter, this is why they even put the filter in the first place. Toyota and lexus with their design hindsight chose a convenient place to locate these filters that makes them easily assessible without having to dismantle the whole tranny. The Hondas/Acuras and most American brands decided to put theirs deep in the gut of the tranny. This is the repair success rate for transmissions on these latter brands are quite low. So coming back to your concern again about getting to the root cause of the problem, it is the friction lining material that mostly does this. This is why replacing the filter and the oil is technically supposed to be the fix. The ultimate and most guaranteed process is to ensure that all the dirty oil(including the one in the torque converter) is completely flushed out to perform a transmission fluid flush. This is quite an expensive venture and requires good technical background to carry out. Thanks for your input, AutoJando 2 Likes |

Are you sure the problem is solved and the car is working fine? Wait wait, hang on. The problem you're having seems different from his. This symptom you just complained about is synonymous with something called torque converter shudder. The problem was common with 2012-2013 toyota camrys amd some Venza model years. The fix is to change the torque converter. This is not an easy/quick job. And if you're getting a torque converter, buy the one removed from a 2014 camry gearbox. The problem was fixed in that model year. AutoJando 5 Likes 1 Share |

AutoJando Do you fix it in your place? And do you scan as well, cos one of the mechanics I took it to, after scanning it told me that it's transmission fluid, that the fluid was bad and it affected the gear. So I'll either fix the gear box or buy a complete new one. |

Cation25: Here is my earlier tread regarding the fault my Camry 012 developed, https://www.nairaland.com/7691025/camry-012-jerk-when-changing
Some car gurus, like xperiencelove, Jimts, etc. gave me their professional suggestions on the possible cause of the issue and solution.

Please share the contact of your gear saviour.... I'm having same issue with my EOD. The solution to his problem does not apply to your Honda Accord. The most likely permanent fix for your own case will be to replace the transmission. This has not been said in order to ruin your mood. Honda transmissions are much more different from Toyota's. The likely culprit of your own problem are the pressure control solenoids B & C, or the pressure modulating solenoid, or even both. Even if you replace these and the problem disappears, it will resurface again because the root cause of it is dirty oil. Even if you change the oil, the dirty primary filter located deep INSIDE the guts of the gearbox will still end up recirculating dirty oil to the new components. There are transmission rebuilders out there that have an appreciable count of success on repairing these trannies, but there's still some level of unassurance with the job for the long run. So decide early. Thanks, AutoJando 2 Likes |
