FRANCISTOWN:

I moved out of my parents house at 16, not because of anything but because my dad was too difficult and we didn't get along. Didn't want to be in his shadow.

For the next 2 years I was in the streets of Aba, from MCC to Osisioma, to Ariara to Ngwa to Umuojima joggling between 2-3 jobs.

I gained admission and would only go home for maybe a week or so, other days I was busy doing my own thing.
After I finished NYSC, i invested in a right business which turned out to be wrong and I went flat broke.

I moved back to a single room and started doing all kinds of things to survive. It was so bad that I had to go back to my parents house for one month before I got my shit together again.

Honestly as I tell you, there were some of my friends who were still in their parents house until they were 30, but now they are so rich and successful that I don't even come close at all.

The point is, whether you leave your parents house at 16, 26 or 36.

What works for everyone is different. Some guys are making 10Mil monthly and they are still living with their parents.

Some just love the company of their parents. Don't pressure anyone, let people live the way they want

Bless u... @last paragraph...

I don't even know why some of u are so conscious of this, a mean, it's ur father's house, as long as they ain't complaining what's d big deal?

Do U think if I live in the same state with my parents, I would go & be paying rent+ bills somewhere? Nop!, The only thing that would get me out of that house would be marriage..I would be happy to stay with my parents as long as possible

It's lazy people who complain of the economy everytime. Why would a man in his mid 30's live at home? Such a man has no ambition.

Go and rent a room in a face me house, go and be a bus conductor or any other manial job. It's much more dignified than to be a free loader crying about the economy.

Too many men have become weak and lazy. I see them all around, even online begging for 2k. Weak and lazy set of people.

It's better to earn 20k a month than not earn at all. Even if you earn 20k, get two of such jobs. Foolish people everywhere. Except you have a health challenge or deformity, there's no excuse for you.
He say "Even if you earn 20k monthly, get 2 jobs" like the first job that he resumes 7am and closes 7pm will allow him the time to even think of eating, not to talk of getting another job.

Na the reason men dey die early be dis, working like an elephant and they die before 50, looking all tattered.

Your submissions above says a lot about how much you've experienced in life than it says of the 30+ guy living with his parents.

Lemme ask you why you think everyone above 30 that still lives with their parents can't really afford to rent his own place?

And who told you that most of them don't have a job? Ifeel your perspective on life in this regard is so narrow and bereave of wisdom.

They're people that decide to stay with their parents due to their parents' health condition. I guess you didn't factor that into your submission.

They're also guys like Seyi Tinubu who's born into wealth. His parents live in mansion and they have a lot of them littered around the world. Whichever one he chooses to stay, it still won't change the fact that he lives with his parents.

Then lemme also ask you what economic or logical gain is there in renting your own house (even when you can afford it) and your dad owns an estate and they'll only sleep in one or two rooms while they're lots of vacant rooms available?

Or you just want to go out for the society to see that you're truly a man?

And if we're being realistic, the realities of the present day Nigeria is not in synch with whatever fantasy any of us have had growing up. Renting a room and parlor at Orile, in Lagos state now goes for as much as half a million for a year and landlords are demanding 2 year rent upfront in addition to agent and commission fee. Total package is 1.3m. That's a room and parlor. Tell me how your 20k of 2 jobs can afford that.

Let's not pressurize the less-privy men among us. Yes, it is expected that at certain age you should be financially stable enough to stand on your own, but if you're reading this and you're above 30 and still stays with your parents, and your reality says otherwise to the expected norm, pls don't go into crime bcuz you want to size up with your mates.

Life na turn by turn. You might be a late bloomer, and there's nothing bad about it. What's bad is knowing that you're down and still be digging. If you're down don't dig. Instead, stand up.

One of my clients in Lagos lived in his father's house till he built his own house within the same area. He was transferred to Lagos 2 months after his father's death. He lived in the house with his wife and mother (mother is still alive). He did a slight renovation and moved in. He paid his own bills, drives a ML350 2010. He bought a land within the same area, built his own house.
You can live anywhere you like, so far you are not a burden to your parents.

You are just saying things to sound so easy. You yourself can you be a bus conductor? Can the money you earn from being a conductor even pay rent? Unless you want to share a room with four persons all in the name of leaving your parents house. Most jobs are 9 - 5 and can be hectic. And you expect someone to do two jobs in a day?

Life hard my people, the minimum rent for a one bedroom apartment in this Lagos is 350k, total package 600k. And if I'm saying minimum, I mean outskirts from Abule egba down to Alakuko, how can someone on a minimum wage afford to live in a comfy place.

Most of us grew up in face to face apartments, and we never wished to have kids there, but you see this naija economy go humble you nah!

If you're privileged to still live in your parents house, stay oo, and save your money towards something profitable, and also settle some bills at home, so dem no go use body hitting kill you.

Many people are just holding on by a thread, it's crazy out here mahn.

With this economy situation, is not bad. The question is, what is he doing while he stays in his parent house. Does he has a vision, is he lazy, what are his plans?

Some men staying with there parent is due to the reason they want to save money. (That's one major reason).

They father rush and roof their uncompleted building that the starter, furnished about 2 room as his money reach, do you know what this boy did? He went and rented a self con of about 170k Furnished it. I confronted him to why I didn't Used that his money to furnish their own personal house. He said he can't live with his dad at his age.(he his about 24yrs) Now his rented house will soon expired while their own house is still not completed.

You want him to live in the bush if he has no job that can provide money for rent or money to start a business?
32-39 years still jobless, when there re lot of other options or things he can do to earn a livelihood. Moreover his parents can secure accommodation for him and empower him to start a business, from there he would find his ground and be independent.

we leave our parent home too early in africa but for the wrong reason, there's nothing bad living with your parent as long as he's working and can afford an apartment.
Quite wrong. It is more prevalent for an 18- 25 to be out of rheir parents home in Europe and North America than Africa. The reason is the easier availability of survival jobs to sustain livelihood in those continent than sub saharan Africa.

This argument used to be more fierce before Nigeria became this bad.

A lot of people have learnt that one doesn't simply leave their parents house.

But there are still teenagers, privileged individuals, women and some stupid people who will die on this hill. They will tell you all sort of rubbish about what age to marry, have kids, have lots of money, have a car, leave your parents house and they always have a way tagging the age very low.

You need to pay them no attention and do your thing. If it hurts them, let them come and chase you out of your parents house or maybe deposit 10m into your account.

To the set of people always bringing this ridiculous talk every year, SHUT THE Bleep UP!

Lol. U b comrade...

I'm not asking people to live beyond their means.. Just stating the way things should be in the ideal manner. It can be slightly different in actual sense.

I know parents don't usually want their kids to leave especially their favourite ones but then one has to find his/her path in life and taste the real world. You can never compare someone that started out in life as early as 20yrs to someone that got spoonfed by the parents up till 40yrs. The way they see life and manage resources would be different.

The summary of my post is if you have a job and have the means to be on your own at 25yrs, just go and live your life.

For you to be successful, you must be ready to leave your comfort zone and survive in the wild.

He say a whole man, half man nko. You had it easy doesn't mean same for anyone, had a friend who left home before any of us, we alway used his apartment for our girls runs. He was successful, married had a kid. Last I heard, he's back to his family's house after life happened, and we the oldies at our parents' have all left the hood. If he's making positive plans towards having his own house, there's nothing wrong so long as he's single. Unemployment as a result of losing a job or not being able to secure a decent job offer which could result to inability to pay one's rent, could happen to anyone. And landlords who don't care about your job, would rather serve you a quit notice. Such scenario can compel a grown man to make use of what is obtainable.

If I find a man in that situation and he has focus, that means he needs some one that will push him further

So I will advise him we get a room for him to pack out so that he can find his bearing

If he refuses, then I will know that what is holding him is bigger than what am planning for him

I will stylishly end the relationship

But if he accepts my idea, I will make sure he pays for the rent and gradually starts getting things like bed and fridge and pots

My major role will be to come for visits, get food stuff along and cook for our meal

With time I will be requesting money for soup and stew, this is a way of teaching him how to provide

If by six months into the relationship he hasn't propose to me

I will inform him that I want to end the relationship as it's heading no where and I will. Move on but if he pleads with me then he should do the needful

Are you married?

Is it ok for a guy to be living at home where he grew up or with his parents between age 32-39? if you are a lady, will you find such men as someone who is serious with life or someone who is unserious?

I understand the economy has not be smiling for many and also understand that some men cannot afford to pay rent due to unemployment.

this is a sensetive issue to most people but simple in logic to those who want to reason without the bias they have been fed by both accepted social norm and what low income family would say. Then few impact if applied blindly

1 Regardless of your parent being low in come or middleclass, if they teach you to save to buy land or a house while at home, regardless of your age (excluding someone who is already married) then there is nothing wrong to be at living with parents at 33 while you save your own money to have your own place

The problem is that most parents who chase their kids away using the age reason or not are due to finance and accomodation, usually if you are contributing financially and parents are benefiting they wouldnt want to you leave and accomodation this usually due not having enough space to accomodate a grown up man, its usually easy squeeze young children in one room, its hard to squeeze in grown up who are also sexual active. Hence you are encourage to leave to have your own personal space and freedom but its not like they want you start learning life on your own, but its that sharing a small space with someone who is grown up

2 From a middleclass family, children are usually encourage to save while at home, so that they raise money for mortagage or buying land and by the time they leave home, they have enough for the deposit of a house, hense no need to ask you to leave when you can save while at parents home, usually middle class you are not squeezes in a tiny space. There encourage not to go out there and suffer when there is neatly room for you

3 The age mentioned 32-39 is not only good when you are married, usually they will be a clush between your wife and your mother. This is your mothers territory and she wants things her own way, its easier for the man to cope with his mother becoz he was raised by her and knows how to cope with her but its not the same story for the wife. So to avoid drama you are better off living alone with yout wife somewhere

4 Most people who have been groomed to think that living with yout parents at certain age is not good so we apply it to everyone instead of taking individual circumstances and consider if its good or not. Yes there are certain condition that usually creates disaster eg when you are married

5 Some parents want you to leave becoz they think being home will make not to worry or prepare or have your own place or home, fair point but i would argue that if the child was raised with the teaching of your having your own place, then what changed him? usually as
parents we spend time buy expensive toys on our children instead of teaching them the right steps of life. When they fail due to our faults we simply blame the child

6 Conclusion there is no clear answer, we are all individuals with different circumstances, your circumstances apply to you as an individual and every parents attitude towards the subject differs from family to family, from social class to social class etc
