In the first policy directive of his administration, President Bola Tinubu has announced the removal of fuel subsidy.

He disclosed this on Monday in his inaugural speech as the new President of Nigeria.

According to him, subsidy can no longer justify its ever increasing costs in the wake of drying resources.

“We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, healthcare and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions,” Tinubu stated.

Wrong heading....the outgoing PMB administration removed subsidy.

The Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning declared yesterday that there has been “no change in the overall policy direction regarding the petrol subsidy envisaged by June 2023.”

What happened, according to the Special Adviser Media and Communications to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, was that the subsidy removal committee needed to be expanded to include teams from the incoming administration and the state governors.

“By the principles and letters of the 2023 Appropriation Act and the PIA laws, there is no provision for subsidy after June 2023,” Abdullahi said.

And who told you that Tinubu has removed subsidy?? Ngenekwenu? Subsidy has been removed on paper. Anyone selling fuel to you at N215 (today's price) was heavily subsidized.

Subsidy has been removed only on paper - political speech. Nobody can remove subsidy from Eagle square without holding series of meetings with petroleum stakeholders.

This is a nice step if the necessary conditions and checks are put in place to prevent backlash on citizens. However, Hyper inflation loading soon , this apc officials should have waited this evening to know the direction America is taking not to default on debt before taking this long overdue initiative
