Petrol prices have almost doubled in Benin after it was announced that fuel subsidies would be scrapped in next-door Nigeria.

Nigeria is one of Africa's oil giants and subsidised petroleum products are routinely smuggled into Benin, where they're mostly sold by the roadside and serve a large part of the population

Popularly called kpayo - which means "unoriginal" in Goun, a native language - it is cheaper than fuelling up at stations, local media reported.

Nigeria's new President Bola Tinubu had in his inauguration speech said fuel subsidy was "gone", an announcement that triggered panic-buying and a surge in fuel prices.

It was later clarified that it would be phased out in the coming weeks.

Good question but then it makes no sense for successive govt to continue to borrow to pay subsidy.

Zoos exist in hands of zoo management team. That leave the govt overseeing the zoo immigration services, zoo police, zoo custom service an animal one.

Nigeria border is over 4500km. That's more than 5X the distance of Lagos to Abuja. How many customs, soldiers, Immigration officers can man that length?

Nigeria is 900 thousand sqkm yet DSS claims to have ear in every nook and crany. Why not employ 20,000 personal and pay them N75k to infiltrate smugglers? That's N20b a year and about what goes to subsidy in a day or two. That same border suddenly became tight in security when it was time for closure and food embargo so why not against fuel smugglers?
Tinubu once asked Buhari to recruit 50,000 into the army so why not take a cue from his own school of thought and use to solve the problem?

What is the difference now?

let govt privatise the existing refineries. Encourage private individuals like dangote who can build new ones to come on stream and they should all being giving a level playing ground. Govt can sell crude to them at internatinal mkt price after refining they can sell as they want. At least three refineries at each region competition will set in and price drops.

We have so many useless agencies that are collecting our sweat via tax payer without doing anything. It is painful when u see almost half of salary bn deducted as a tax without any benefits from the govt

This is the reason I support the removal of fuel subsidy but my fear is when they removed subsidy on gas, diesel fuel, and kerosene, what is the benefits it add to the citizens?

Subsidy has been removed from gas diesel and kerosene that’s why the prices soar high years back. Only pms was left out then. Now it’s time for it to be removed permanently

You didn't still answer my question? What is the benefits of the subsidy removed on Gas, diesel and kerosene expanded to the masses?
Hope they wont corrupt the system? If only subsidy is the only thing citizens benefits from the government, why they not leave it
. But if the government will utilize it on power, education, infrastructure and health. Still good .

You borrow to pay subsidies and the petrol is being sold in gallons in neighbouring countries.
Re: Benin Republic Petrol Prices Soar As Nigeria Moves To End Subsidy- BBC by porka: 1:24pm On Jun 04, 2023
Fuel prices will continue to double in the Republic of Benin each time prices increase in Nigeria.

Fuel will continued to be smuggled to neighboring countries since prices will always be cheaper in Nigeria. Always!

It is a simple logic.

But Nigerian government and its international friends like the BBC will continue to cite smuggling in neighboring countries as an excuse to punish Nigerians.

Till eternity.
