DSS Seizes Emefiele’s Passport, Plans Home, Office Search by peekspot(m): 6:42am On Jun 12, 2023

The Department of State Services has confiscated the passport of the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, The PUNCH has learnt.

The service, it was also learnt, may search Emefiele’s home and office this week.

Following his suspension on Friday as a result of the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector, the service arrested Emefiele in Lagos and flew him to Abuja in a private jet on Saturday.

The spokesperson for the service, Peter Afunanya, in a statement said Emefiele had been taken into custody and was under investigation.

However, a source in the DSS on Sunday said it was standard procedure for his travel document to be seized pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

The source added that the office and residence of the suspended apex bank governor would be searched.

The source said, “Of course, Emefiele’s travel document would be confiscated as part of the standard process pending the conclusion of our investigation. Also, as part of the investigation, his house and office would be searched for documents that can aid the ongoing investigation on his management of the CBN.”

Our correspondent had reported that other top directors of the CBN might also be invited or arrested for questioning over their roles in the administration of the apex bank.

It was learnt that the DSS might revisit the criminal charges it earlier filed against Emefiele which borders on terrorism financing and fraud.

The secret police similarly accused the suspended CBN box of mismanaging the CBN subsidiary, Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending and the Anchor Borrowers Programme.

The DSS spokesman, Afunanya, could not be reached for comment on Sunday as calls to his line indicated that he was unreachable.

He had yet to respond to a text message on the detention of Emefiele as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has said the DSS lacked constitutional power to investigate and prosecute Emefiele.

Falana in a message sent to one of our correspondents said Emefiele should be transferred to the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission who according to him, posses the legal right to prosecute Emefiele.

“A few months ago, the State Security Service levelled grave allegations of terrorism financing, money laundering, and other economic crimes against Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. At the material time, the attempt by the SSS to arrest, investigate, and prosecute Mr. Emefiele was frustrated by the erstwhile Buhari administration.

“However, following the suspension of Mr. Emefiele as the Governor of the CBN by President Bola Tinubu, the SSS quizzed him in Lagos and flew him to Abuja yesterday. According to media reports, the investigation of the suspect by the SSS has commenced. Even though the SSS which initially denied the arrest has since turned around to admit that Mr. Emefiele is in its custody.

“In the case of Dr. Bukola SarakI v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (2018) 16 NWLR (pt. 1646) 433-434, the Supreme Court ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission lacks the vires to investigate and prosecute the appellant for the breach of the provisions of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. It was for that principal reason that Senator Saraki was freed by the apex court.

“In line with the principle of law enunciated by the apex court in Saraki’s case the SSS lacks the power to investigate and prosecute Mr. Emefiele in respect of allegations of money laundering and other economic crimes. Therefore, after investigating the alleged involvement of Emefiele in terrorism financing the SSS should transfer him to the EFCC for the purpose of investigating

It's the usual format of looking for a scapegoat and chasing shadows to sell the narrative of seriously fighting for the people. The same way Dasuki was arrested and we were all happy only to find out it was just a witchhunt at the end and nothing was found on him. Isn't it ironic that of all the corruption claims of forex racketeering and the whole confusion of the naira swap policy, the DSS are charging him with a wire transfer to Afghanistan
1. Where's Hadi Sirika who commissioned a chartered and packaged airline, that's afta launching a logo for Billions and purchasing fire fighting trucks for over a billion naira each?
2. Where's the June allocation for subsidy? The previous govt budgeted subsidy for the first half of the year to the tune of about 7.8 billion in dollars (let's not even start about how they arrived at that figure despite NNPC and customs embarassing themselves over the actual figure of consumption)
3. How come petrol price was fixed at over 488 per litre when as early as March Melee Kyari on television in front of marketers said the govt pays N209 as subsidy on each litre of petrol to marketers as subsidy for the product. (Do the maths 195 + 209 will give you the cost of petrol after subsidy is removed). Are Nigerians being "codedly" taxed by the new government for petrol?

These are the questions sane Nigerians should be asking but as usual, they will sell the usual narrative of working and sycophants and sentimental Nigerians (who only reason along tribal and religious lines will ignore all these)

I keep saying it that DSS is a circus.

1. They are accusing Emefiele of financing Taliban. Is Emefiele a muslim?

2. They are accusing Emefiele of fraud. Is that the duty of DSS? We have EFCC that should do that.

Many times, the DSS have issued false alarms. Example: The DSS issued a statement that they have uncovered plot to install an interim government.
Did they charge anyone for treason from their fake discovery?

A good intelligence organization will definitely keep quiet, raid the meeting where the plans of violence disruption are being planned, get audio and video evidence of such plans and charge the culprits.

DSS is now a biased organization. . . in their charges, they omitted "Naria Redesign" so not to implicate buhari and the cabals in their investigation.

Nigeria will never progress with this set of clowns.

Celebrating the Arrest of a man way he intentions na to reduce vote buying and corruption

Statistics show that N2.72 trillion out of the $3.26 trillion currency in circulation as of June 2022 was outside the vaults of commercial banks across the country...imagine that na about almost 85 percent

So with the introduction of that new naira note policy corruption would have been tackled as the exercise will bring the hoarded currency into the banking system
The new naira note was supposed to circulate to every nook and cranny of the country but greedy politicians like them tinubu connived and conspired with some bank managers to keep the money to themselves not only that some greedy Nigerians make the whole thing worse for us

We are doomed in this part of the Africa

Good. The eediot should be thrown into jail and keys thrown into the river. All his stolen money and properties from it must be taken from him. I heard on Radio yesterday that this f0ol stole money running into Trillions ooo and has properties everywhere. He used his useless Policies to punish innocent Nigerians and enriched himself. Imagine those that even died during the hardship days of Cashless policy too. Na that one even pain me pass. In a sane country, this Man is not supposed to Leave the 4 walls of jail anytime soon, including Buhari sef. But na Naija be this. They might just tell him to pay some money as fine and let him go. Or they put him to one Audio prison and then release him later in few months like they did for Orji Uzor Kalu. Sick Country!

That's why it's very dangerous to surrender the destiny of this country in the hands of these people. If an old man with enough education and experience could do things this way then no way around it. Thank God we have made our decision. May Asiwaju succeed.

A call to serve at the trying time of a nation: A test of sincerity and patriotism of Nigera's newly elected leaders.

With 85.37% of revenue for debt servicing in February 2023; over 133 million Nigerians in multidimensional poverty; IDP camps housing Nigerians in millions; millions of youths unemployed and/or under-employed, casualised; over 20 million out-of-school children and many professionals leaving the country in drove by the day; there is no gain saying that Nigeria is in her trying time! In fact, one could confidently say that the country is at her lowest ebb of hope!

How did we get here as a nation? Where did we go wrong? Who do we offend as a people? All these questions, among others, are those being asked among the average Nigerians who have been frustrated by cumulative effects of poor governance over the years!

I have even heard a Nigerian who said Nigeria can not overcome her challenges, let alone prosperous in his lifetime, considering his current age and when he has been yearning for good governance! Hope lost!

Ours is a Nigeria that is blessed! From mineral resources to the best brains(human capital). History has it that a former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon once said; "Nigeria's problem is not money; but how to spend it" In fact, the availability of abundant money in Nigeria at that time gave birth to "Udoji commission" This for the students of history.

Our human capital has been among the best in the world! Nigerians in diaspora have been adjudged the engine of development of respective countries in their chosen careers (medicine, engineering, finance, education, etc). Little wonder, the recent massive recruitment of our doctors, nurses, and other professionals by Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom!

What accumulated to become the woes of our country today are the medium - and long-term effects of maladministrations, poor governance, loss of our value system, and lack of patriotism among our past political class!

Although, I know some of the past leaders are still at the helm or corridor of power today, I believe, starting a new dispensation is an opportunity to repent, refocus and atone for the sins of the past and work with the new leader towards having a Nigeria that works for all Nigerians!

The major factor that put Nigeria in her economic woe and heavy debt burden is fiscal recklessness; and the cardinal drivers of this are corruption and bloated cost of governance!

No doubt, the removal of the monster, petrol subsidy, the on-going attempt to clean the nine-year-old rots in the CBN, signing of the power/electricity bill among other steps towards having economic rebound are steps in the right direction. However, we need the same political will that pronounced "fuel subsidy is gone" on May 29 to say bye-bye to the bloated rewards to the political officeholders as a matter of urgency! Although this is a tough call, it is inevitable and necessary at this trying time of our dear country!

As many of the politicians said during their campaigns "it is a call to serve" and this can only be true if the rewards are in moderations and not anti-masses that would further plung the country into another level of poverty!

Sadly, Nigeria has been adjudged as a nation with the highest and unrealistic rewards to her political officeholders to the detriment of her citizens! This appellation must be eliminated in this dispensation for the president to have his name on the right side of history! I believe he is here to have his name written in gold! It is time for sincerity, sacrifice, and patriotism by the ruling class!

We expect a moderate, competent, and efficient and effective cabinet from the executive arm while the legislature should live within reasonable and moderate allowances! The agitation for the proverbial juicy committee membership and oversight-for-money should not raise their ugly heads this time and in the overall interest of all of us!

My appeal to all elected leaders, those already appointed and those to be appointed is to be patriotic, ready to sacrifice and fear the Almighty God who has given them the privilege to be in their respective positions of authority and responsibility! My appeal to the president is to drive fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability among the arms and the levels of government! With this, the hope of Nigerians would be rekindled and renewed in line with his campaign slogan!

Although the immediate past administration made a lame attempt towards its autonomy, the third tier of government, the local government, has been morribond over the years, and this has worsened the suffering of an average Nigerian Primary health care system, sanitations, government-,own schools, street/community roads, and other infrastructure that could bring governance close to people are in comatose just to be moderate with words!

It is time to sincerely strengthen this tier of government and hold its managers accountable! The way the president is interested in the activities of the legislature; he should have a periodic meeting with the local government administrators and hold them accountable for the resources allocated to them! They shouldn't be left in the whimp of the state governors alone!

In response to a question raised in the early part of this piece, "How did we get here?" We lost it as a people the day we lost our value system! We lost it when both the leaders and the led started promoting personal interests over the collective interest! We lost it when the leaders embarked on inordinate the accumulation of wealth at the expense of their followers! Finally, we lost when we lost our sense of patriotism!

As we clamour for good governance leading to a renewed hope, we need an emergency declaration on national orientation! Suffice to say here that the last time we had a vibrant National Orientation Agency was during the era of Professor Jerry Gana as the minister of information and national orientation!
I believe the current administration would revive this morribond but important agency of government! Above all, it is important to state that national orientation and reorientation are our collective projects which must start as a matter of urgency from our respective homes and families; which is the smallest unit of the society!

As I wind down this piece, I urge all my fellow citizens to show more understanding and patience with the government in all her measures that are necessary to restore Nigeria on to the path of unity, peace, progress and prosperity! No doubt, some of these measures would come with some temporary pains. We just need to endure to have the gains in the medium and long terms! Nigeria will rise again!

We can not all be in politics at the same time,Let us participate actively to support our leaders at all levels of government!
Although the attitude and experience with some past political leaders could be discouraging; let us be guided by the words of Abraham Lincoln to his son's teacher " In every enemy, there is a friend. In every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader. " Let us forget the past and try our best to give those that we have chosen to lead us at this time a benefit of the doubt.

Let us participate in governance by leading from behind; support our leaders by holding them accountable through town hall meetings and other means of engagement for regular feedback and advice.

Let us remain a good set of followers, a law abiding citizens, and be patriotic!

With these, I'm confident that we would have a Nigeria of our dreams sooner than expected!

May God bless all Nigerians and the federal Republic of Nigeria!
