How many of them will be employed ?

Are they job in Nigeria ? This is a country where the unemployment rate is 33%.

Let him reduce unemployment first.
This is a country where umemployment rate was 33%.
Watch out for a notable decline of that number.

We have seen beyond the first obstacle.

Nigeria is on her way to greatness.

Free education in university, poly, college of edu at both federal and state university is far better, easier and cheaper to administer than this useless bill tinubu signed. With removal of subsidy. Allocate the money to higher institutions.

You will find they'll find a way of making you pay it back long after you stop being a student since Tinubu nor the loan givers are not into the sort of charity you are thinking of.

Even the part about interest free will turn out to be untrue as you'd find that the fees that cost so much now will more than double or triple to compensate so you end up owing lots.

You can japa afterwards of course, making it harder for them to make you pay, but I wouldn't be surprised if the loan is tied to your passport so you can't get one if you owe, or to your parents who'll have to pay it back if you don't. They can also make it a requirement of future employment like they do with NYSC, such that if you don't serve or don't pay back your loan you are disqualified for employment.

We shall find out in the future of course, so I'll make a note of this thread in my diary for 5 and 10 years time to reassess how it's gone.

Next thing he has to do is scrap NYSC so I can earn what I deserve instead of subsidising my employer by making my labour cheap for them while getting the skills and knowledge gets more expensive for me.

No oga otelemuye. It's not going to be a draconian wahala like you're painting it. The loans will start being paid back in small instalments the moment you start a paid job.

I think you should substitute earnings/income in place of gainful employment.

A person who inherited an estate may not be employed but end up with income to repay the loan. There could also be govt intervention programs to help offset/forgive the loan, either partial or in full.

Say for instance govt is trying to recruit into an area of occupation that is not attractive to graduates, like teaching or civil defense. They might target student loan beneficiaries with forgiveness offers in lieu of tenured service.
Best way to sustain the scheme would be for Government to employ most of the loan beneficiaries when they graduate.
Else it will be difficult to recover the loans except the economy booms & jobs abound for graduates.

Amcon debtors have not paid back 5 trillion

Cbn loans to rice farmers is still hanging

Loans to support businesses during covid still hanging

Ioc are even owing Nigeria billions of dollars

But u expect students will pay back loans when they are not even sure of jobs after graduating. Free education is better and benefits all persons

This one na for person wey no get money na Dem really need am or people that their school fees is very high. I can't see my self paying less than 100k as school fees and collecting student loan for it.
And they are in large numbers.

When I was at OAU, the number of student from poor homes was extremely high. They even came to OAU because of the cheap fees and accommodation costs, yet they were still struggling. I borrowed quite a few number of colleagues money to get by.

I think the subsidy on school fees will be removed and school fees will Increase in all universities... That way, universities become autonomous and stop waiting for handouts from the federal government...

U are a half baked graduate.bill passed 2nd reading on may 25th n was assented to today.meaning buhari push that bill through but wasnt around to sign.just like dangote refinery coming at tinubu time.
My point is this bill is a product of last regime,so stop praising tinubu n instead praise buhari for allowing d bill get to where it is.
It wasn't top of buhari's priority. He had 8yrs but couldn't make it happen. It was Tinubu who campaigned with student loan in 2015 for Buhari's election and campaigned with it again for himself in 2023.

This country is slowly positively turn around. Tinubu is indeed a proved administrator. I see Nigeria having standardized credit rating soon.
Yes oo. Glimmer of hope. I can't believe this would ever happen in Nigeria.

The Indians have built their own student loan system to be very robust to the extent that Indian graduates even take out loans from the government to study overseas.

Will these schools provide jobs to these students so as to pay the loan? How will they go about addressing the loan. They have to address the unemployment issue first inorder for it to be effective. One thing they can do is to monitor students so that you will not get your degree upon graduation but a notice of graduation also indicating that you are on student loan. The bank would be notified and once you're gainfully employed, the money can then be deducted on a percentage bases from your salary.

But a lot of people will end up slaves to the system as is the case abroad. Worse still in Nigeria.

He's just trying his best to act nicely, so that people can manageably say he's doing well and attempt to temporarily turn people's minds towards himself before he's being kicked out of office soon.. It's just a psychological game plan!

My response was not for those willing to pay back in small or big installments but to someone who thinks he would not pay back a kobo, for whom I think the "draconian wahala like you're painting it" is no where near as much as the real draconian wahala they will face.

Tinubu, whom some say is a jaguda, can not be so simply outsmarted by such people is what I think, and it would not surprise me if the student loan company is not part owned by him who would like to make a profit or at least not lose his initial investment. But if you think I am wrong, please, 5-10 years time will soon come when we can reassess how it's gone.
