Hello everyone,
How long is the USA visa valid for? Is it still 2 years?

If your visa expires when you're in the US, do you need to travel back to Nigeria to renew or are there any other options?

Thank you so much brothers and sisters!
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by TEMIT0PE: 10:03pm On Jun 12, 2023
Depends on the length of your program.

A visa is just a document that allows you entry into another Country. You can still remain in the US after your visa expires PROVIDED YOU HAVE THE LEGAL RIGHT to remain there (e.g your program has not been completed, your on on CPT/OPT)

Thank you. I'm more concerned about if I have to travel abroad after my US visa is expired. Do I need to reapply for a new visa to gain entry though my i-20 is still valid i.e. my study program is not finished?

Yes. If your I-20 is still valid, you have to reapply for visa but might not attend interview by using drop box

Good evening good people.

Please I will greatly appreciate response to this question.

My nephew just got admission into a University in US.

Prior to the admission he had been included in a visitor visa application for a cousin's wedding in July.

While he was filling application for student visa, a message showed that his profile is already in the system hence he couldn't proceed to complete the application. payment for visa has been made for both b1/b2 and student visa for him.

What should be done for him to progress in the application?

Thanks for anticipated help

Thanks so much for the response. My school insisted they don't re-issue I-20s after it has already been issued oh for reasons such as mine after so many back-and-forths.
They advised me to use a family member to support the loan amount
roqeebahyetunde:

You only need to retrieve DS-160 and update the information. Your DS-160 number will change after this, so you will need to copy it again to your CGI portal. You don't have to pay new MRV fee and your appointment date won't change except you reschedule yourself. Regarding the loan, while some people have been lucky to get approved I won't advise you to leave the loan on the I-20 cos you don't know the VO you will meet. The best thing is to get a bank statement for the school to update your I-20

Embassy: Abuja
Attempt: 1st
School: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Course: Atmospheric sciences and Meteorology
Funding: Fully funded scholarship
Status: Approved✅✅
Date: 8th June, 2023

I've been a silent reader of this thread since March, big thanks and God bless everyone who has contributed positively to this thread with transcripts, tips and pointers. Glory be to God, I got my visa approved on my first attempt. I went to the embassy in Abuja at 6:30 a.m. on the 8th of June 2023.

Endeavor to go there early as everyone is let in irrespective of your time of appointment (mine was 8am but I did my interview close to 12noon). Please don't patronize the touts outside, whatever document arrangements will be done inside. Another thing of note is if you paid your visa fee with your GT Bank app, the receipts generated by the app is valid. Don't be deceived into paying money to print another type of receipt. I was interviewed by a bald slim white man at window 10. My Visa interview went as follows.

VO: Good morning,

Me : Good morning sir

VO: your passport and your I-20 please

Me: here they are

VO: Have you traveled outside the country before?

Me: No, I've not had a reason to

VO: I see you're going to Michigan

Me: Yes, I am going to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for my PhD in Atmospheric sciences and Meteorology for a period of 5 years with a funding package of $xx,Bleep annually for the period of my study.

VO: I see, that's an impressive offer (looks at my I-20, becomes silent and was typing on the system)

Me: (To avoid the silence being awkward, I started talking) Yes it is, I submitted a competitive application package with a compelling SOP, I have excellent CGPAs in my Bsc in Physics (x .xx) from NSUK in 2016 and Msc in Space Physics (x.xx) as the best graduating student from AUST in 2021. (To my surprise, he didn't cut in so I continued) I have 5 years of relevant research experience in my proposed field of study with 3 publications in international peer reviewed journals.

VO: (smiles and nods) Tell me, what do you do?

Me: I am a research scientific officer at xxxxxx, deployed to the Bleep where I conduct active research in the department of lower atmospheric dynamics and modeling (VO types). I am currently the team lead for the Atmospheric monitoring equipment network group, deploying and installing 38 modular weather stations and air quality sensors across Nigeria.

VO: Do you have any relatives in the US?

Me: No I do not

VO: What are your plans after your PhD?

Me: With the technical depth and experience I would have acquired, I intend to return to my agency to take up a higher position as a Chief scientific officer with the added responsibility of heading a lab in my area of expertise in biosphere - atmosphere interactions and earth system modeling. My agency has been kind enough to grant me 5 years of study leave with pay and I am legally bonded to return upon completion of my PhD (Home ties!!)

VO: (types for a fair bit and looks attentively at the system, my heart cut small at this point tbh) did you apply for a US visa 10 years ago?

Me: No I did not

VO: Ok, just a similar first name (mumbles something) I have no reason to deny you a visa, I'll be approving your visa......(I became deaf at this point, I have read transcripts of people not hearing anything at this point and laughed but now I understand the state of trance one falls into upon approval)... please pick up your passport at this location (hands me white paper) in ......days.......will be sent to your email. Congratulations sir.

Me: (smiling) Thank you sir and have a lovely day.

In all honesty I was prepared but nervous scared thinking a simple "no" can destroy all my dreams. God was faithful and i became tranquil at the time of interview and maintained eye contact all through, please while it's an important interview remember it's just a chat and be fluid in answering don't cram. I hope this helps anyone preparing and I wish you success in your interview.

Please nairalanders. I got an admission into the University of Cincinnati Ohio for a Masters in Engineering. The tuition is about 28k, out of which I got 9.5k waiver. The total COA is around 45k. So the deficit is about 36k. My elder brother is sponsoring and I have his account statement that has 20M in it. Please what are my chances? And what do I need to do to convince the VO?

Please, you guys should add me too, I'm under the Abuja embassy, and no date yet. 0808 584 4908. Thanks

Hello Everyone.

My emergency request was denied.

My academic start date is 25th of August, and the internship start date that comes with my admission is 16th of August.

Could there be a reason why it was denied? Also, can I request for Emergency again?

Your earliest admission date is not within 60 days yet. Most likely why your request was rejected. That requirement is clearly spelt out on the CGI portal. You cannot request another emergency unless you pay MRV fees again.
You have to stay vigilant on the portal and look to reschedule.
