The student loan move is an applaudable move from the Tinubu’s administration , it’s just that I have a few reservations about its workability and it serving the purpose it was designed for .

I heard it was Gbajabiamala that sponsored the bill. Personally I believe Gbaja is in discordant tunes with the current economic realities . For example , that 500k per annum family income cieling set by the bill is not good enough . 500k per annum when divided by 12 is less than 42k per month . If u say earning 42k or lesser per month as a family is what qualifies a family member for the loan, what happens to a family of 5 that earns 85k per month , pays house rent , utility bills and have next to nothing to save at the end of the month ? Cant their son or daughter benefit from the loan too ?

I think our elected officials need to know about Time Value of money so they can put it into cognisance when sponsoring bills .

Also I would like for government to provide grace for people who don’t get jobs within 2 years of graduation about how to pay back their loans when they eventually get jobs or go into self employment . We all know getting jobs as a fresh graduate nowadays is very tedious . I remember a friend in school who was on 2.1 but a lecturer he had issue with scored him E in a course he should have scored at least B. He finshed with 2.2 and it cost him 3 good years before a got a graduate trainee role cos of the grade requirements . So people like that who have loans to pay back to the system can take time to hustle without having their names called out like Palmpay does their debtors .

If all these issues are addressed ……I’m all in for the student loan bill . Make government just make sure people pay back the loan before they japa . Nobody should have a student loan outsnding in Nigeria and have their visas abroad approved.

it's a human thing. No be everything be Nigerian thing only

I wrote this somewhere else

Your quote about pure water is spot on. I remeber seeing pure water for the first time in 1989/90 at a gala held in my secondary school. Very fancy looking. The texture of the bag was soft and it had coloured ink. It looked classy and guaranteed safe to drink . Today everyone is literally making pure water in their toilet with rough coarse fading blue ink.

I wrote somwehere else that the same thing happened with Linda ikeji. She worked on her blog for years. Once she hammered everyone started gossip blog, but unlike her they had no restraint or discipline whatsoever. Linda had some really douche moves like the Femi kuti paternity thing, but those copying her are far far worse.

The copying is only part of the issue. The real issue is what Ibime highlighted - when Nigerians jump on the copy copy wagon, they do not bother with process or standard and they wind up bastardizing the whole thing. Hilda may present as an airhead sexpot, but she clearly did alot of research and work and planning and preparation. This lady and those backing her look like they just watched her livestream and started imitating.

It is actually something that aggravates me - the fact that Nigerians largely learn by rote - watching. They then copy and execute without an understanding of the principle. Because they do not understand the principle they produce at a lower cost than the original and introduce bastadization. It also means they are mostly incapable of original thought.

My wife has a sienna. I wanted to fix a guard on the back. If you see the nonsense the welder did because he could not figure out how to weld a guard to the car chassis. It was a mess. I eventually figured it out myself. Get a standard towing accessory and weld the guard to it. This worked perfectly.

As another example. We jointly developed a crash barrier for petrol pumps in the office. The design involved a model of a crash barrier, deciding on the thickness of the pipe, and how deeply the legs are buried. The crash barrier is to protect a pump when it is hit by a vehicle. The cost was approx 75k at the time. As with several things we developed, this was copied across the industry. But the people copying did not understand the thought behind it. I was at a station once with an imitation barrier that fell apart when a car brushed it. The metal was thin. It probably cost 30k or less. This is the lazy copying and bastadization that reduces quality across the board.

The. Good thing is Nigerians have already demonstrated their aversion to repaying loans and plans will be made to accommodate this.

The end goal is that university charge an amount that you think will make you give competitive education without government support and subsidy. So let's now see if there will be any reason for ASUU to strike for 2yrs straight

For students who won't be able to afford it get student loans

Like Tinubu said your 4yrs is 4yrs, 5yrs is 5yrs.
Any university that charges high and can't provide a competitive standard will lose students to those private unis

So govt stop subsidizing tertiary education and fuel.

So no excuse for the 2 sectors anymore

When the 2 guarantors aka cosigners who are level 14 workers start getting the loan debited from their salary, they will go find the defaulter.. unless the guarantor will also run away or resign

Again.
I have no problem with the student loans for the stupid ones that can't see beyond apc vs LP.
The issue I have is what happens after the 2yrs.
Going by our population we have at least 100m people as youths and we barely have jobs available.
That the FG/SG have been handling the running of schools doesn't mean we get subsidised education. They run it badly enough from the curriculum, to the living conditions to the strikes. There's nothing subsidised in any of this.

I can see everyone saying it's geared towards autonomy which as usual would lead to even further school fees. Not a problem but again given our economic reality, you are still asking the common man to bear the brunt of things for a country that's not remotely giving back to its citizens.
As usual revenue generation but at what cost to the people?

For the first time, i agree with the guy above, this was my thought too
If we consider minimum wage and jobs available the students won't be able to pay up within that 2 years
And i hope the student loan won't end up like npower scam dbanj and his crew did

What next,Healthcare?

Good Healthcare system is not for everyone..Do you know how much it cost to get an ambulance services in Amelica,do you know how much it takes to see a dentist or how long to get an appointment if it is not an emergency in youkay.

When you are paying through your nose for hospital bills, tests, xrays lets see if you will have tiime for kerewa that will cause Nigeria's population explosion especially in the north.

They are not saying you must pay it up in 2yrs. You start payment in 2yrs

No graduate should be getting a minimum wage job.

If you will get student loans going into millions to earn minimum wage then maybe University education is not for you

Totally agree. I guess everyone will sit down and decide if it's worth getting millions to go faff around in Uni

Some departments and courses might even get scrapped

This is what ASUU always wanted autonomy and an excuse to turn 4yrs course into 7years

No, it's not.

Tertiary Education is already been heavily subsidised. What are the loans suppose to achieve?

Unless Tinubu has the intention to stop tertiary education subsidy.

You do know there are hundreds of thousands of people whose parents never sponsor them beyond secondary school?

What the bill does is enable those who want to further their education do so even if their parents cannot afford to sponsor them.

When I see some of these criticisms, I just know it's coming from you guys are so far from the reality of an average Nigerian.

The student loan bill is highly commendable. Anyone who argues otherwise as far as I'm concerned is an enemy of the people.

the question is those that will take the loan after graduating and there is no job how will they repay it

Millions of Americans have student loan debt, amassing to more than $1.6 trillion by the end of last year, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. It's the result of a decades-long explosion in borrowing coupled with soaring education costs. 27 Feb 2023

Except the Nigeria student loan model will be different from that of America's,this is another rabbit hole cheesy...A country where jobs are even more readily available and unemployment rate is less than 15%

One truth u need to tell urself is that public education is highly subsidized in Nigeria. I attended a public secondary school for 6 years for free and also attended a public university where we paid few thousands of naira. In fact my 100l-400l school fees is not up to N150k when summed up.

Today I work in the same organization with colleagues who paid millions in fees in Babcock, Bowen, Covenant universities etc.

Apart from the living conditions in the private institutions being superb and a more conducive learning environment, I can confidently say there's little or no difference in the knowledge that was imparted in me by my professors and that of those who attended private varsities. At least we can both function on our jobs based on the knowledge imparted into us by our respective institutions.

I will be lying to myself if I tell people I didn't get subsidized education .

I think the student loan is a good way to go; the government should just perfect the loan repayment process and make sure people don't find a way to game the system. We all know school fees will be increased but the good side is that the school fees payment is deferred to 2 years after graduation.

The govt needs to give a favorable environment for them to enable them create jobs
As a graduate you have to make yourself competitive enough to be employable.

The student loan is optional and if you think post graduation you will only get npower then it might not be in your best interest to get it

Now I truly understand sonoflincoln\abbeysunny on American politics thread. This was a guy in America who whenever we're debating issues would always shout, "nigga, you're not in America to feel this things the way we do, shut the fvck up". And we would take it as condescension. But now I can see the point this guy was making.

There is no way you would be so far away and see things the same way those who are right there in the midst feel it. So whatever theoretical position you take, it's very easy for you to do, because no matter how it turns out, you're not affected. So please for the love of God, shut the fvck up with your insulting and condescending takes devoid of our unique understanding of our apprehensions. Stop seeing our own lives as "a game". Pawns on a chess board, opinions coming from you are largely interpreted to be insulting seeing as they're coming from another place, another reality not ours!!

They don't have to go into paid employment to repay the loan

During my NYSC, I begged a man who does structured cabling for LANs, CCTV cameras, Intercoms, Router, Switches and Access point installations to allow me follow him to work. I learnt from him and was making money from it before I even finished my NYSC. As a matter of fact, the skills I picked up at the time still fetches me money till this day and was very instrumental in getting me my first job when I switched to paid employment.

I did not sit down waiting for the government to give me a job and I am sure many of us have similar stories to share.

Imagine, boldly saying, "university is not for all". In a Nigeria, where there is already scarcity of employment opportunities, you comfortably open your stinking bucal cavity and say, people should seek other informal sector jobs, meanwhile you yourself are a university graduate who is where he is because of the educational skills he has acquired.
Imagine the heartlessness and elitism!!
