The Nigerian Navy has described as spurious the allegations by ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, that some cabals in the military are involved in oil theft in the region.

Dokubo made the claims when he visited President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Friday.

Hours after the accusation, the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan, challenged Dokubo to name those involved in such an act.

He claimed that the Niger Delta leader is only trying to court the favour of President Tinubu with such allegations.

“If Asari Dokubo is seeking some form of relevance and alleges that there is a cabal of military people that are involved in crude oil theft, let him bring the names. Nobody is afraid of getting the names of those involved in crude oil theft,” the naval spokesman told Channels Television on the phone.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy has through its Operation Dakata da Barawo recorded tremendous successes in the fight against oil theft in the Niger Delta region.

He cited the recent arrest of a ship, Heroic Edun, that entered Nigeria illegally and the court fines imposed on the owners of the ship as evidence of the Nigerian Navy’s desire to combat crude oil theft.

The spokesman further listed other achievements of the Nigerian Navy – recorded between April 1, 2022, and June 12, 2023 – to include the arrest of 131 suspects, 17 vessels, destruction of 519 illegal mining sites, deactivation of 4,261 storage tanks with 569 wooden boats and demobilisation of 69 vehicles.

He noted that through the efforts of the Navy, oil thieves were denied over 116.9 million litres of crude oil, 45.1 million litres of refined diesel, and 2.4 million litres of kerosene as well as over 372,000 litres of premium motor spirit, all worth more than N71.8 billion based on the current prices.

“The Nigerian Navy is actively involved in the fight against crude oil theft and the resources in the Niger Delta. So, for anybody to say that there is a cabal of military officers, the only simple thing is to bring the evidence, bring the names. I rest my case,” Ayo-Vaughan maintained.

No need mention names. Check your ranks at jetty For further investigation.

The attitude of public officers in Nigeria should change for better. Be patriotic. If you aid and abet crime you're not better than an arm robber. The difference is the uniform.

In 2011,I heard from a naval officer that if he's posted to the oil area.... Under six month he's a millionaire because of helping criminals to shortchange Nigerian government.

They will offload half vessels of pms and return the vessel to the middle of the... Then come back to offload the remainder as another vessel.

They also have a way of making Nigerian government pay for demorage of vessels berth for weeks.

This was after my interaction with a lieutenant in Nigeria navy. So nobody in uniform should dare us mention names.

Why should any sane organization ask for people to mention names 'when they already know the truth'

The masses are not Happy because they're paying for the excesses in subsidy corruption due to the lackadaisical attitude of some clowns in uniform

How does 470,000bpd get stolen daily without the connivance of the military. Unfortunately for the military, Asari is a kind of whistleblower that cannot be bullied.

The President needs the support of every patriotic Nigerian for us to overcome this menace of oil theft.

The Nigerian Navy must step up its work and expose anyone caught even if these unpatriotic elements are members of the armed offices.

It is a constant truth that military officers are involved in oil theft in Niger Delta. Asari Dokubo didn't say anything new. As the Commander-in-Chief President Tinubu should have set DSS on some massive undercover operations to unveil the culprits.

Allowing Asari Dokubo a head of an illegal armed group that military had decimated years ago to blackmail the same military in order to stage a comeback with 'his boys' is a dangerous game to play.

Asari only stated the obvious.

Other time, a gigantic shipping vessel was discovered stationed in the creeks, siphoning thousands of barrels of crude.
How could that have been possible without connivance of the military.

Funny enough, no single person was arrested & the military eventually burnt the ship, destroying vital evidence.

Tinubu should as a matter of urgency stop allowing everyone to be visiting him anyhow.

Not as if he is incorrect, but being close Tinubu has now given him guts to embarrass the entire armed forces on television. Not good at all.
