THE ILLEGAL DETENTION OF YOUNG EDO MAN ‘ERNEST IMONITIE’ BY THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE (NPF) UNIT (SARS)

We write to express our dissatisfaction with the acts of the Nigerian Police, whose officers unjustly arrested Ernest Imonitie on Thursday night, 15th June 2023, from his apartment in Benin City, Edo State, and took him away to Abuja in a commando and menacing manner.

Ernest Imonitie is being detained in confinement at the SARS headquarters in Guzape, Abateur, after various family and friends speculated about his whereabouts.

Ernest Imonitie's charges remained unknown, and he hasn't been charged to court since Friday, June 16, 2023, and this has remained the case to this day. The case is being handled by Mr. Obida of the Intelligence unit Abateur.

Ernest Imonitie's fundamental human rights, as guaranteed by sections 34,35,36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, have been badly disregarded and violated.

Based on previous SARS detentions of suspects, we greatly worry for Mr. Ernest Imonitie's life and well-being. An internal source informed us that Ernest Imonitie is presently severely ill and needed quick medical attention. Our prayers are directed to the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission for timely and appropriate assistance in this case by ordering the officers involved to follow the rule of law and standard policing rules.

We encourage the police to charge the young man immediately and to grant Ernest Imonitie unrestricted access to lawyers and medical practitioners.

We are confident that the Nigerian Police Force, led by the capable Kayode Egbetokun, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the highly respected Solomon Arase, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, will step in and ensure that due process is upheld and followed in this case in accordance with established laws.
