South East is not densely populated. The whole of Igboland is not densely populated sir. In fact, South East is a minority population in a land mass with a very large swathe of unoccupied and undeveloped nature's beauty agrarian land. The only 3 majority tribes in Nigeria are the Hausa, Yoruba and Fulani. The Igbo political elite like HE Orji Kalu know this fact. It is not only land mass do the Igbo lack, the Igbo have a low population as well so should not be experiencing this worst forms of gully erosion if the low population and erected buildings are well dispersed in the small land mass that is still largely unoccupied as seen from Google satellite. I have looked up Igboland on Google satellite map several times and you have large expanse of unoccupied land which supports the low population data reported for the Igbo in most data from INEC, NCC, JAMB etc. The few areas that are densely populated are now bedeviled with wanton lawlessness and it is when these houses are demolished that trees can be planted and people forced to go build in those unoccupied undeveloped largely agrarian land that take up most of Igboland from the satellite image. nairalanda1: This is caused by the lawlessness of reckless building of houses on waterways to block water flow and drainages, nature then took its toll. Everyone can still recall how one of the influencers in Anambra stood his ground to fight task force officers to stop bulldozers from pulling down one of those buildings he built on waterways and blocking free flow of water. These lawless people are the people Mrs Oby Ezekwelizi pretends not to see because of nepotism; these set of Ndi Anambra are committing crimes against humanity and nature in Anambra and getting away with it yet Oby is not bothered.smh It's this kind of lawlessness in Anambra we will not accept in Lagos. FreeStuffsNG, Mr. "Tinubu started free education in Lagos state" and our erudite gully erosion spotter...shebi you know say gully erosion is not restricted to South East?😜😜😜😆 Keep reminding the supermod to get it to the front page, make we rough am 😆😆😆 Also create thread on why the Federal Government insists on making Anambra children score above the highest cut off mark in Nigeria in order to gain admission into any Federal Government College (Unity schools) in Nigeria.. because that is "cheating".😆😆😆 53 Likes 5 Shares

We know what Tinubu did to resolve coastal erosion in Lagos. He partnered with the private sector and built a multi billion dollar coastal city. What did the dullard of Anambra do about gully erosion in Anambra to show us his brain is 21st century complaint? If only Anambra had the genius of Tinubu when it mattered most. 34 Likes 6 Shares |

Anambras erosion history is mainly caused by soil topography. Go to oko and nanka and you'll witness its debilitating effect. Its hardly man made. 5 Likes 1 Share |

I lived at Nkisi aroli street, had my nursery and primary 1 $ 2 there at Alheri Mortune memorial school before I left in year 2000 to Rock Foundation GRA. I will definitely visit that Nkisi Aroli next month when I get to Anambra.. I remember there is a stream down that Nkisi Aroli, we only go down there to dump refuse at the ravine just before the stream... It's likely the gully has expanded because the signs were there as at year 2000 2 Likes |

The way negative news about Anambra state hits from page these day though You'd be tempted to think that it's all deliberate so as to assasinate the character of someone or to belittle the mammoth achievements of such industrious people. Whichever one it is, it sure does have a political undertone. 15 Likes 1 Share |

FreeStuffsNG: Actually, no. The problem is that the South East is located in what is supposed to be a rainforest. The soil of the rainforest is very very weak. Naturally, the forest cover is supposed to protect the soil...but as populations rise, the trees get cut down, and the soil is exposed to the heavy rain, and washed away...leading to erosion. That's why the best cure or prevention for erosion is planting trees. Cut a tree down, plant a tree in its place. The problem is, space for trees might not be enough. The SE is a very densely populated area. Erosion also happens in the South west and south south. Zupay: Same answer for you too. 8 Likes |

Another opportunity to engage in Nairaland's non-contact sport which involves taunting others, hauling abuse, and much more. Most researchers [2, 3, 4] have shown that the environmental factors of vegetation, geology, geomorphology, climate in the form of rainfall which is very aggressive in the region and the soil factor all contribute in the erosion problem and their development.Reference: Igwe, C. Most of these gully erosions are made made due to poor construction works by road contractors. |
