brotherly, as humans what we consider as suffering is not static. It changes over time with different circumstances. Right now living in naija suffering to you is no light and bad roads and no jobs and bad infrastructure. You want to japa to enjoy those things. After you japa, after a few years your idea of suffering changes to water bills, light bills, council tax, heavy taxation, bad weather, tiny apartment, crazy car insurance price, racism, not feeling like you belong, inability to save anything because of heavy billing etc etc. Then you stArt missing the simplicity of home with no bills. You generate your own water and light and houSe is paid for and no council tax, and buka food everywhere and everybody looks like you and you feel like you belong etc etc. All the things you used to complain about seem like no big deal anymore aka bad roads and light issue. You are missing home but now you are stuck in London forever because you can never eArn enough to relocate back home again because of heavy billing unless you are just one of the lucky few who is like an IT guru earning good money. And so depression sets in . That's the life of the average Londoner . Stuck. Can't move back and can't move forward . 38 Likes 2 Shares |

sukkot: Very well said. They don’t even know that at some point they will start to miss those Naija bad roads and even their gen. It would seem like a totally inconsequential thing compared to the challenges they are facing in that UK. I had the same experience. 6 Likes 1 Share |

The problem with Nigerians that keeps selling their assets to go and do menial jobs in the UK is the assumption they put on the exchange rate of the pounds without factoring the cost of living as well as the heavy tax they have to pay. Never being to the UK, but I work for clients over there and this has exposed me to how Nigerians in the UK are suffering and smiling all in the name of “I am in Obodo Oyinbo” The only Nigerians that are really enjoying the japa dreams are those medical doctors that are qualified General practitioners in the UK. An becoming a gp in the UK also requires long years of 5 years and lots of money spent for trainings and exam. Except also for professional IT consultants who also have spent considerable number of years. But you see all these recent ones going in drove, believe me you have nothing to envy about them. It’s not so bright at the end of the tunnel as they have to spend more on cost of living and taxes than they are making. 8 Likes 1 Share |

They way people just condemned UK makes me wonder if it’s the same UK that i’m living in they are talking about. Most students from Nigeria come to the UK having paid just a small portion of their tuition fee as deposit hoping to work and paying the balance while studying which is almost impossible. It is normal for people like that to struggle because I don’t know how somebody who’s on a student visa with 20hrs allowed work time wants to make money to pay tuition fee balance of £9000 within 9 months. But if you have paid your full tuition fee or 80%, I don’t see any reason why your life should not be better than it was when you are in Nigeria after graduation. Let say you are earning £500 weekly after tax, that’s £2000 every 4 weeks. Assuming your bills is as follows: 2 bedroom house rent £550 Energy £150 Council Tax £100 Water £20 Internet £25 Car Finance £200 Car Insurance £100 Fuelling £100 Feeding £250 Other expenses £100 You will still have about £400 as saving every month which in my opinion is better than earning one million naira before tax in Nigeria considering traffic, lack of constant electricity, poor health care, terrrible educational system etc. 10 Likes 1 Share |
