Then, early eighties, during any festival, Sallah, Easter, Xmas, the whole community would be in festive mood,

irrespective of whether you are Muslim, Christian, or non-believer in either religion.

Don't just know where all these madness descended from, that made all the love disappear

There was this popular American TV program"PASSION" I use to it watch around 2002 , I was 10 at that year.

The main subjects of the program was a kid boy staying with his strict granny

She was so tough on him that she hardly let him play with other kids outside their house

The boy do get upset many times and granny wasn't given in at all.

Very interesting program for kiddies way back then

The granny should be around 65-70 at that time and kid boy should be between 9 and 11.

How time flies

The boy was named Tom.
The granny can perform dark magic and the very last episode I watched was when the granny turned Tom into a Teddy bear and then she turned many black sticks into snakes.

Lol.... I'm in my early 30s incase you are wondering how I still remember this grin

Has anyone talked about the rampant armed robbery and burning of thieves?

Or the mountains of waste like what is normal in Abia state right now?

Men those days were memorable.
-You could ride your bicycle on the street without worry .
- there were open fields for playing soccer and yearly tournaments.
- we go treck from school without fear and use out t fare lick local jumbo or balewa.
- no agbero ,Omo onile and touts. Buy ur land , build in peace and share food d day u move in.
- there was love and people help each other, not now that u act for simple direction or help me push car ,u must settle.
- you own a TV and VCR,u are the don Dada in your hood.
- less churches shouting everytime and opening like business centres.
Lagos was clean every last Saturday of the month after environmental sanitation exercise.
Men Lagos has changed from what it was in the past to something else.

Growing up in the 80's reminds me of those days when:

1. NTA and FRCN dominated and had no competition.

2. No email, so we had to post our letters and wait patiently for a reply.

3. Teachers were more dedicated and education had more value.

4. Christmas and birthdays were so enjoyable!

5. We relished the visit of uncles and aunties because of the tip they give us.

6. Musical lyrics made sense.

7. Idolized Maradona, Pele, Brazil, Argentina, etc.

8. Pentecostal churches were few.

grin Life was fun mehn! I emember my dad often take us in an army Land Rover vehicle for a ride around Lagos. National Arts Theater and Apapa Amusement Park were the bum for us a kids then.Bar beach treat was our expectations on Sunday.

He was a strict disciplinarian as a soldier. Remember when the coup era was a scary experience for us in the Barracks. You better behave well in Barracks or MP or Intelligence will treat your fuckups.

Abacha was strict but ruthless. Babangida was a shy General when passing through the Dodan Barracks presidential driveway( gonna do a thread on life in the army Barracks one day). Soldiers jubilate like mad the day he died.

The super eagles winning the Nation cups in 1980( @ the National stadium) and 1994(Tinusia) and Olympic Gold Medal in Atlanta Georgia USA will forever be itched in my memory

Actually, I disagree

1980's started off well, then the oil price crashed, and the economy went down. Then prices of food went up under Buhari, and then SAP came with IBB.

Times were hard then, and Nigerians complained well well. It's easy to look back and think it was all well, but that was the era of things like O-1-0, Kabu-kabu, and Andrew checking out (yes people started japa then). The era when the naira started falling down.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Apart from Oshodi and Idumota, Lagos is much quieter in the suburbs. In the 80s there were plenty of trees and shrubs all over the city and flooding is a less common disaster in those days… but armed robberies is almost everyday news! The news channels were less than 10 and were mostly dominated by Babangida and his military regime palaver. There were very few millionaires (MKO, Muftau Olanihun, Dangote and Eze Ego) and everyone knew them because they were constantly mentioned by musicians and radio hosts… everyone wears ‘aswani’ or ‘katangowa’ even office workers and civil servants, schools are often shut down due to strikes and protests. the main transport in Lagos were run by few private businessmen, the most popular of them is Alhaji Ise Oluwa who first came up with converting 911 trucks to ‘moluę s’. You see those women sweeping sides of express roads, they hv tail o! Yam and egg were the Sunday breakfast (if you are well-to-do)
The most popular tv host in Lagos: Sony Iraboh, Bisi Olatilo, Baba Gboin , etc. most popular musicians were the older fuji musicians like Late Ayinde Barrister, Kollington, K1, Sunny T, Obesere and Pasuma… and then the juju stars like King Sunny Ade, Eb Obe, Shina Peters and Dayo Kujore. Later in the mid 90s came the afro pop stars like the Plantation boyz, them Idrees Abdulkrm and others… not much Igbo or Hausa singers in those eras (if we are talking about Lagos)

Last time I posted was 5 years ago but I had to drop this due to nostalgia.

There's was little means of communication. If you don't have the patience of sending letters through post office , I think only NiTEL was available at thay point and it was not reliable. I lived briefly at dodan barracks. I remember we kids hailing babangida as his convoy leaves . Baba go just use newspaper cover his face lol. Very handsome man and likeable man. The rich lived in ikeja and surulere, there was nothing like lekki, those places were just villages mostly huts, on the mainland it was as if where civilization ended was iyanaipaja. Anything beyond that was just Bush. Berger was very scanty. Going further to ibafo was just bush . Scanty settlements as you drive to ibadan.. then mowe was another scanty settlement coz it led to ofada and owode egba. You could also access abeokuta through that route. There were very few TV stations tho they had times they opened and closed can't remember. We watched local contents at night. There were richer contents on Saturday and Sunday nights. Sunday night food was usually moi moi and garri.

There was also constant riots and protest such that once they start somewhere, it rapidly escalates . Everybody starts closing shops and running home. Students were also forced to close from school and go home. I didnt know much about politics then so i didnt know what was going on. Children played together till late night when everyone is tired. When abacha died, people were running up and down celebrating. I thought nigeria had won the world cup or something. I was a teenager then, it felt so weird seeing people jubilate that someone had just died. . Oh did I forget the once in a blue moon Sunday trips to Mr biggs. Life generally was bitter sweet.

Really good memories I must say, growing up in the late 90s in Surulere.

I really did miss my childhood.

Water parks
Nigerian Airways 🥰🥰🥰

The International airport was not crowded then. Airport Authority staff quarters was like UK back in those days. Clean and posh! That Airport area was a military zone that was peaceful, serene, and quite.

Life was fun then. I was so certain The future was going to be bright. Absolutely nothing was being forced then. It was easy does it!

Lagos was not as overpopulated then. We knew which Household and the people living on each street then. When Nigeria was playing football, we watched as a community and we had Fanti Carnival that was only populated by true Lagosians, Lafiaji, Campos, Epetedo, Obalende, Olowongbowo, etc then, and people from Mainland will come to the Island. Nothing like Lekki then (it was all like a swamp and it took 3 to 4 days before you can get to Epe), and we had just a few houses at Maroko, Sandfill.

Those were the days of Goldspot, Fruity, Tandi, and the big bottled Coke, was it 150 cl or 100 Cl?

Then the limited people that were not Lagosians were Egun people, Togolese, Ghanaians, and Edo people.

And Lagos was very clean then. Gosh!!!

Fun places then apart from Mr. Biggs, you go to Bar Beach or Kuramo Beach.

Life was really beautiful then. Enough discipline.

Back then was when Miitary men were ruling Nigeria. It was better in their time.

Now, rogue politicians have turned the country upside down.

Growing up in those days was fun!

I was about 8years old when former President, Buhari staged a coup, I remember we were listening to a radio program on Radio Nigeria when Military marshal songs took over the airwaves, it stroke us that the Army had taken over.

I was in Ibadan then. Kingsway Rendezvous. leventis. Ibadan zoo with the legendary gorilla called Haruna.

The 80s was “fun” for me. I remember the regular student uprisings against the nation’s leaders. Student riots were risqué fun. Shutdown entire universities and towns. Withstood soldier violence. I was a kid but I was enthralled by their bravery. I remember Buhari’s soldiers flogging shege from Nigerians during the era of EssenCo (essential commodities). My mum was flogged silly because of milk (which is why I can never and will never be a Buhari fan). Days of mothercare and brand new clothes aka ready-made
