This one self na just money that goes to customs. You'll still pay terminal and shipping charges, documentation and service charge to the clearing agent. This will easily set you back another 200-300k.

And God help you if the vehicle you buy is not in the customs database

The Federal Government has so far saved about N400bn as a result of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, since May 31, 2023, when the initiative was officially implemented, oil marketers stated on Thursday.

"Right now they (the government) are making money. At least with this removal of subsidy, the government has racked in hundreds of billions, whether in naira or dollar. This is because every month we know how much they lose before,” the National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Okonkwo, stated.

"When there is deregulation and no subsidy, the price of petrol would either go up or come down. If you want to profiteer, those who bring in and sell at cheaper rates would put you out of business. So the market fundamentals will and capping.

Therefore the floating of the naira at this time that Nigeria is beginning to make savings is not going to be a fixed thing,” determine the pricing.

Choppings for customs. cheesy

They will give you one ridiculous amount of money and say it's the value of the car. You either pay it or bribe them to reduce it. And you know as customs bribe dey be.

By the time you do your plus and minus, you'll realize paying them the bribe will still save you like 150k.

Faced with paying whatever amount they give or bribing them and paying 150k less, your guess is as good as mine the option most car dealers will choose. cheesy

It’s worse than that bro.

I know someone whose official Landcruiser prado was seized around 2018/2019 cos of this customs duty wahala.

He was traveling along Lagos Ibadan-Expressway and he was stopped by customs who asked his driver for the vehicle papers which included customs papers. The customs officers told him point blank the customs papers were not genuine and he had a case to answer .

He called his dealer who sold the car and the fooolish man instead of coming out clean told him the customs guys just wanted to exploit him. So alaye stood his ground and didn’t hesitate to follow the customs guys to their office .

It was much later it dawned on him that the dealer didn’t pay the required duty on the vehicle ( which was a luxury vehicle and attracted 70% of the current value of the vehicle as duty ). The dealer just bribed the customs at the port and they arranged paper for him.

Now he has to pay 70% of the vehicle’s current value which had since gone up due to the recession of 2017-2018. Till date the vehicle still dey customs office . Alaye don move on and had to buy another vehicle .

Is it not even funny that the same customs who cleared the car for passage at the port is the one impounding the car on the highway. These are the things we were hoping the e-valuation will finally solve but they deliberately omitted some cars from their database so they can still give manual valuation.

And the dealer is just evil. You can still get reduced valuation and not have it impounded as long as you're reasonable with it.

This is why verification of customs duties is very important for anyone buying a Tokunbo car. Customs no dey hear abeg o.
