Rena Wakama has been appointed as the new coach...

Let's go there. I am happy for Wakama. I have read her profiles via google. She is experienced both on the court and off the court. I think she will put a good squad together for Nigeria. Our ladies just have to jell quickly. I think Sarah Ogoke, Ezinne Kalu, Macaulay, Elonu and the usual ladies will turn up for camping. I expect to see some new faces though. Wakama might know some new talents she wants to bring into the squad - ladies playing in Europe or for colleges in the USA.

The girls meet up regularly and the Digress ladies even organised a party this weekend in Atlanta. I think they'll probably have a camp in the US soon, funds may be an issue sha cause the NBBF is broke. The advantage is the girls know how to self organise so won't be an issue.
carbonado:
...Ezinne will most likely be back, she is a dedicated person, the core off the team will be back, there is a sisterhood in there..it more like an opportunity for them to catch up with each other, hence why they always seem to rise above what the NBBF throws at them. Akhator just gave birth, so do not expect her.

Good to see that the girls are still close.... The team spirit is definitely there... I hope the NBBF can give them the support they need this time...

This coach is starting on a wrong footing, we have a squad already, why are you doing a try out, does this mean if our established players fail to show up for the try out, they won't be part of the squad for Afrobasket?
Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread - Onward To The Afrobasket by hismail1(m): 8:56am On Jul 02, 2023
The reason they are conducting an open try out is obvious, the D Tigress team won't show up for Afrobasket and they desperately need to put a team together for the tournament, will be a miracle if we make it to the QF.

I saw this yesterday and was quite conflicted. I'll however reserve my judgement for later giving the coach the benefit of doubt since I'm not privy to interval conversations had.

I really do not think this is meant to get a team for Afrobasket. Maybe a player or 2 will come out of this but the core of the team won't be affected. Not sure they'll want to jeopardize our Olympic qualification chances by fielding an entirely new team that hasn't started training 3 weeks to the tournament.

Not true. The Dtigress will show up. Anyone still peddling this is being dishonest. I mean Adaora the captain of the team has had to come out on more than one occasion to dispel this as fake new. The girls had a meet up just yesterday and can't wait to be in camp. It's a different thing of the NBBF no longer wants them, or the new coach has other plans, but to put it in the girls will be wrong.

A few of them even expressed their disgust to the open trial things on social media yesterday, just to show that they are anticipating a camp ASAP

Coach Wakama should talk to Adaora Elonu. She is the Captain. She knows how to Marshall the ladies.

I hope the NBBF won't do what the NFF are doing by ordering the coach to include some local players by force... Our league is in comatose..they are just doing some tournaments here and there... nothing is stable..

Nah. I want to believe the coach is only holding the open trials to identify future talents. There is no way she will raise a competitive team within 3 weeks from an open trial

Chimeze Metu has committed to play for Nigeria at the basketball pre Olympics qualifying tournament that will take place later next month...

I hope a few more NBA player commit...

Nigerians didn't, the administrators messed things up. Not sure there's been a league since 2015. The most they've done is have abridged competitions. Until government divests from sports totally, politicians won't leave

This is what I'm saying.
no league since 2015,yet little or nothing is said about this online unlike football.

Can the football league not be on for just 2 years without the internet getting filled up with stories and comments?

Same can happen to football and I dare say same has happened to football. Remember basketball isn't native to Nigerians, most folks are just getting acquainted to it. Football however is more like Nigeria's staple food. Compared to what obtained before, Nigerians are now disinterested with Nigerian football. The Super 6 of the NPFL recently ended and they struggled to get people to the stadium. The last Super Eagles game in Abuja was embarrassingly scanty. Also remember league football was in shambles till the IMC was instituted last year. The just concluded league is the best we've had in a decade.

So your argument really doesn't fly. Shut down league football in Nigeria and you'll be surprised Nigerians will just react a few days and that's it. It's because of the way sports generally is run in Nigeria. It's why I'm thankful more private clubs are gaining promotion to the NPFL. That way we have less governmental clubs.

Seems you're not getting my message.

Same cant happen to football.

There was no time it happened that our football league for off for that long. 2015 is 8 years.

Football is also not our sport, though we adopted it earlier than basketball.

I still believe the reason basketball has been ignored and allowed to be run anyhow by egoistic Nigerians is because most Nigerians don't really watch the sport.

They aren't even making money from the sport..they are just using politics to ruin things... Its a shame that with the number of Nigerians, both home and foreign born that have made giant strides in basketball, especially in the NBA, the sport is still in shambles here ..
Countries like Uganda, Kenya and South Africa that can't lace our boots in basketball have functioning leagues...

Your last paragraph is kind of true.. Personally,I think the reason for this is because of the huge difference in time zones between Nigeria and the US/Canada where the NBA is...

Canada don't even rate high in basketball.

After the US, European nations take the lead.

I watch alot of European league games from Spain to Lithuania to even Turkey etc.

Only the US tops these leagues and their time zone is similar to ours.

Nigerians (most) just like bandwagon, they follow what the majority follows, hence the reason basketball is yet to blossom.
