Generation is one of them, but processor comes first. Also, depending on what you intend to use the laptop for, there are specifications you should consider.

For video editing, graphics design and a little bit of gaming he should get a laptop with at least 2gb dedicated graphics card, a NVIDIA GTX 980m preferably. This should be fairly ok.

But if you have the budget and want something better, go for a laptop with atlest 4gb dedicated graphics card.

For the 4gb variant be ready to cough out 300-400k

For the 2gb variant it should be between 150-250k

I wouldn't advise you to go for a 1gb dedicated graphics card laptop, it would also serve the purpose, but you go see shege. To game on this variant be prepared to configure and tweak and tweak and the experience is going to be sh.itty, as for graphics work be prepared to be frustrated. Although 1gb dedicated graphics card laptops are cheaper, but the migraine they'd give you, is something else and not worthy it.

-In the Display Settings box, select Advanced Display Settings and then choose the Display Adapter properties option.
