Imagine some illiterates above are hailing them as if this is not against the constitution. Is funny how people that fight for one Nigeria are the ones that is bringing law like this. You can’t eat your cake and have it. English language is the official language for Nigeria and all official duties should be conducted in English language. In Bauchi, there are many tribes and languages. It’s not only Hausa, what of Fulani speaking people or minority tribes. These is just a trample on their rights. If people are not ready to be in a nation and abide with the constitution, why on earth do you fight against referendum?
Bauchi state is not among the pure Hausa indigenous state, it was Fulanis that are the majority but turned to Hausa by gradually abandoning their forefathers language and embracing the Hausa. It was them that are now pushing for Hausa to be their recognizes as the official language in government. Hausa language conquering the north in stages.

Totally in support of this..it should even be made the first official language in the state. Other tribes and states should emulate it so that those prodigal sons and daughters who don't speak indigenous language won't have any business in government.
And how does that improve the economy? Lagos is still flooded

I’m sure they must have a lot of illiterates in their midst which is why they deemed it necessary to lower the standards to accommodate them.

They might as well incorporate their different dialects as well.

Well to be fair in my mum's family state- Delta, the former governor Okowa made Urhobo compulsorily (and mandating it to be the only language) to be taught in primary and secondary schools.

I disagree with this. If most of the citizens don't understand what their representatives are saying, how can there be accountability? I think it is better for them to speak the language that everyone understands while putting more efforts towards giving proper education to the people.

It is finished. They can’t speak English in the first place and now adopting Hausa as an official language It will preserve their language quite alright but how are they going to be integrated into other region of the country?

There's no place the article said that English would no longer be spoken in plenary or the state. But even if that's the case, that would still be the right thing to do.

Eventually, ALL African countries would return to their native languages but it would take time...... Nature would always return to itself, in fact, smarter African cultures would be the first to return to their native languages.

We are Africans. We are not English people!!

Not being able to speak English isn't complete illiteracy but illiteracy is when you can't simply understand the section of constitution and the House standing rules they cited that allows them to adopt any indigenous language in addition to English second language of proceedings.
For ur information though Hausa as a language is spoken by more than 95% of the ppl in the state, originally there's no pure Hausa in Bauchi, u will tribe like, jarawa, sayawa, fulani, kare-kare, gerawa etc more than 50 tribes spoken by different ppl in different part of the state, in a nutshell almost all the ppl can understand Hausa but there are a lot who can't speak English, that's the essence and it purely constitunal.
You should also note that the laws and any other House business will be written in English and and all correspondence will be in English.

I am sure the Chinese or French or Germans are also not progressive by your definition.

Does it occur to you that English is the language of our colonialists and each zone in Nigeria have their major language?
