Second Niger Bridge Vandalised Some road fittings installed on the newly inaugurated Second Niger bridge have been stolen by vandals, The PUNCH can exclusively report. A source in the works ministry confirmed the theft on Wednesday, saying that the expansion joint walkway on axis 330 of the bridge had been stolen. The source said, “Unfortunately, It’s true. The stolen fitting is an element from the expansion joints of the bridge. Drivers on that road have to be careful as the damaged part can cause discomfort to motorists.” Another source who spoke to our correspondent corroborated the report adding that supervising engineers are not happy about the incident. 2nd Niger Bridge Recall that on May 23, the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, commissioned the N336 billion bridge, via an online platform, Zoom alongside seven other infrastructural projects. The former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, announced the completion of the bridge at a briefing in October 2022 after almost five decades of failed promises by successive administrations. On December 15, 2022, the Federal Government also opened the Second Niger Bridge for use to ease traffic in the South-East during the festive season. The Second Niger Bridge was first proposed during the 1978/79 political campaign by then-candidate Shehu Shagari of the National Party of Nigeria. Patterned after the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, the 1.6 kilometres long bridge linking Anambra and Delta states is to decongest traffic on the existing Niger Bridge, boost economic activities, and connect the South-East with the rest of the country. Efforts to reach the ministry spokesperson, Blessing Adams-Lere, for official confirmation, proved abortive, as phone calls were not responded to as of press time. https://newscenterng.com/just-in-second-niger-bridge-vandalised/14/ 1 Like |

When you subject your citizens to hunger, penury and hardship, you're setting the foundation for monumental criminality. There are no two ways about it! |

People who indulge in acts of vandalism bring harm to both themselves and to the society. But I tell you, they will not be able to continue these wrong deeds much longer |

Hausa cart boys in Portharcourt have removed most of the man hole covers on the road. The danger vandals cause can only be imagined. |

Rossikk: Infrastructures are vandalized in all regions. That you don't know about it may be as a result of your own ulterior motive. https://punchng.com/police-arraign-two-for-stealing-rail-tracks/ https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/nrc-arrests-2-rail-track-vandals-in-zaria/ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/01/nscdc-arrests-five-for-vandalizing-abuja-bridge-railings/ |

Rossikk: It’s because those abokis in the north have not ventured into the south west yet. Once they enter south west and stay for one week their counterparts there will introduce them to the wonders of scrap iron theft and sales. From there they can trek to the south east, steal irons, carry back to the south west and sell for big big money |

Rossikk: This is how you know people who have never crossed inter-state boundaries to the North. During the laying of rail lines from Kaduna to Abuja, do you know how many times those rail lines were stolen and quietly replaced by the government? About 15 kilometres before the outskirts of Rigasa village, there's a corridor of grassland vegetation with rocky terrains on one side and swampy moulds on the other. Do you know how many times rail lines were dismantled there? It took military presence and hovering helicopters before that trend was curbed. Or do you want me to tell you how criminals made it a habit to steal iron barricades that El-rufai installed along Kawo express down to central market, because he was trying discourage the public from crossing roads and using the pedestrian bridges instead, just to reduce accidents? You nairalanders always find delight in giving ethnic colorations to criminality. |
