The continued neglect of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway by the Federal Government has left bitter taste in the mouths of millions living in communities, towns and villages along that corridor. Beyond grinding economic activities almost to a halt, the expressway has made life brutish, short, fearful and painful. ADEYINKA ADERIBIGBE, who monitored the road, returned with sordid tales of its deplorate state.

It is not for nothing that roads, which constitute about 70 to 80 per cent ratio of the mode of transportation for people, goods and services, are acknowledged as economic enablers. For one, roads are catalysts for economic growth and development, as they fast-track economic integration by opening up the interiors and connecting the rural and urban dwellers in a seamless and symbiotic manner that promote economic integration of all parts of society.
Although, the Muhammadu Buhari administration claimed to have left its impact on about 700 roads across the country, apparently in a bid to leverage road transportation to catalyze economic growth and development, one such road on which it may have abysmally failed in this regard is the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, which remained, in part, one of the worst in the country. The new Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway inaugurated by General Olusegun Obasanjo, was built in the 1980s by the Murtala Mohammed-Obasanjo military administration. A dual-carriageway, it is arguably, one of the most important roads in the Southwest.

It connects Ogun State to Lagos. It stretches from the Apapa Wharf running through Ijora to Western Avenue to Ojuelegba, Mushin, down to Oshodi, Ikeja, from where it gets to Sango-Ota and on to Abeokuta.

Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, an 81-kilometre-long (50mi) expressway is, arguably, among Nigeria’s busiest highways, playing host to a cluster of over 300 communities and linking the people in these communities with those living in metropolitan Lagos.

The road accommodates more than 250,000 passenger car units (PCU) daily (a unit of measurement frequently used for calculating traffic volume where a passenger car is taken as a standard vehicle), and constitutes one of the largest road networks in Africa.

As the federal government refused to do the federal road, states too nor send.

That's Seun's, President Obasanjo, VP Osinbajo highway to their hometown that brings so much IGR to Lagos and to Ogun state. Yet Abandoned for the people to suffer, yet they continue to earn huge IGR from the people risking and applying that so much money making death trap Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

Seun, on tweeter that you so much spend more time in, call out the agency responsible for the rehabilitation of road to your village to fix it fast o. Seun, We know you will not fly plane from Lagos to Abeokuta, you must to pass this bad road and we do not want to hear story that touches o

Yoo!!!

This road is an eyesore.

Motorists are forced to use "oneway" especially from Meiran to Toll gate which is extremely dangerous.

I hope the Govt acts fast in repairing that road.

So they don't have governors there?

Why are governors from that region almost useless and doing nothing?

Painfully, the commuters have to pay higher fares for a trip they'll never enjoy. It's a double loss.

The #70b some 500 people will share can fix this road.

But I thought Fashola was the minister of works for 8yrs? No federal road in the north is as bad as roads in southern Nigeria. Maybe that of south is caused by excessive rainfall.

If he won his senatorial election in the last election even though the road is like this, you now think he won't be voted for when he vie to become the governor because of this same bad road? He might even win in all the polling units located close to the road.

They did less than 1km, they abandoned it at Igbodu around March this year.
If you carry a Toyota Corolla enter the water, it will completely cover the bonnet to windscreen. No alternative, people still swim the road like that. It will be lucrative to start a vehicle rewire work close by.

Very pathetic what an eye sore! Our leaders travel out of the country and see developments but will never recreate what they see with huge revenues they generates. If is to launder our common health they do that without Mercy. Very bad and pathetic.

See as everywhere is quiet,if O.p had mentioned Aba or Onitsha, they will flood here with their spittle and insults

The stretch of bad roads in Ogun state alone is longer than the Great Wall of China but they never talk about that, they are more interested in Aba and Onitsha

Let me attempt to answer your question.

Yayi was representing Lagos West and didn't see this place as part of his constituency. Now that it is part of his constituency, if the road gets fixed (with or without his input), our people will count it as an achievement for him.

So, even if na eye service because he dey find Governorship, if them fix am, it's good optics.
