Pwettylinda: The raw material for fufu and garri is Cassava which was introduced into West Africa by the Portugese in the 16th century In Africa (sub-Saharan Africa), the diffusion of cassava can be described as a self-spreading innovation. Cassava was introduced into Africa by Portuguese traders from Brazil in the 16th century (Okigbo, 1980). It was initially adopted as a famine-reserve crop. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (hereafter referred to as βthe Congoβ) where the crop was first introduced, millet, banana and yam were the traditional staples but farmers adopted cassava because it provided a more reliable source of food during drought, locust attack and during the hungry season 1. Although there was some local trade in cassava, production was mostly for home consumption and cassava was prepared in the simplest fashion, i.e. slicing and boiling (Jones, 1959). TemplarLandry: The Portuguese to be more precise. Wild populations of M. esculenta subspecies flabellifolia, shown to be the progenitor of domesticated cassava, are centered in west-central Brazil, where it was likely first domesticated no more than 10,000 years BP. Forms of the modern domesticated species can also be found growing in the wild in the south of Brazil. By 4600 BC, cassava pollen appears in the Gulf of Mexico lowlands, at the San AndrΓ©s archaeological site. The oldest direct evidence of cassava cultivation comes from a 1,400-year-old Maya site, Joya de CerΓ©n, in El Salvador. sauce 1 Like 1 Share |

Fufu was discovered during the biafra war and ugwu leaf also. Hunger made the ibos to eat all types of leaf where ugwu was discovered as an edible vegetable. Fufu was discovered by chance as the food blockade made them adventurous where by they ate everything and anything to survive. That's why they have some physical attribute like yam leg and flat heads etc 1 Like |

TemplarLandry: Well the evidence says otherwise It is not a thing of disgrace to say that cassava is not indigenous to Africa. Many crops around the world are not necessarily indigenous to the area where they exist Maize grows in Europe. It is not indigenous to Europe either, for example. Banana 's real origin is in some parts of Asia self 1 Like |

Pwettylinda: Portogesse slavers . They brought cassava from SA to give to coastal tribes who depended on yams from iboland . Cassava is indigenous to SA. The Portogesse taught the natives how to prepare the cassava to be safe for eating . Cassava grains will later be developed by grating ,drying and frying the cassava for preservation. 1 Like |
