bigfather: No refinery run by government will ever be efficient and productive. NOTHING run by government is productive and efficient. Everyone has to learn that essential truth. If you doubt me PLEASE name just ONE government commercial company operating efficiently and producing enough high quality goods and services to satisfy the public demand. The EVIDENCE is abundant in the privatization and deregulation of cement, banking, telecoms and airlines. By the way, the naira was DEVALUED, not floated. There's a real difference and it matters. Government is the problem NOT the solution. Good Luck to Nigerians. 2 Likes 1 Share |

nairalanda1:Another lie Our oil revenue in 2022 was about $45bn. If we use 75% of it to pay for debts then, with our total debts being in the region of $66bn, we will have about $36bn left of our debts. Now how come our debt is about $70bn in 2023. You're just swallowing and vomiting trash from govt propaganda machineries 2 Likes |

IbeOkehie: Then they should lease it out and allow private companies to run it rather than allowing to turn to a Museum . Atleast that would save us some FX rather than having to take the crude abroad to refine at the expense of the FX . The higher the FX goes, the higher the price of fuel ! |

nairalanda1: You misplace the essence of government when you say "We think we are entitled to cheap fuel". Oh yes, we the people are for sure entitled to cheap fuel the same way a farming community is entitled to cheap food (that has always been the case throughout human history). We were previously the sixth largest exporter and producer of crude oil until Buhari's disastrous government. Do stop excusing the government for the deterioration we are seeing today that has necessitated our support for the removal of subsidies. At some point in the future, we need to reap what we produce and not the other way around. 1 Like |

MadamExcellency: Well, why don't we subsidize foodstuff then? Seriously, it costs money to refine fuel. Paying a subsidy is a nice way of throwing away one's money, because costs rise. Cost of machinery, costs of workers, cost of land, cost of compensating people for oil spills and using their land, taxes, etc. At the end, the cost rises and eats more and more of our subsidy. Unless our population was 10 million and we were producing 10 million barrels of crude a day, we can't afford subsides. |

IbeOkehie:Any country that believes govt is the problem must be ready to run a lean govt just as we have in the UK. You can't say govt is the problem yet it costs us as much a N25trn to run the govt. What kind of country spends that amount to keep a problem running? That's illogical. If we all agree that our govt is problematic, then our elites need to let go of this expensive system where a gov can singlehandedly employ 30000 aides in the blink of an eye. Same gov who had never generated 1million naira!! If not, one day, we'll wake up and our elites will tell us govt has no business spending on the police that the citizens have to pay to access police services 1 Like |

ChybuzzDD: You're WRONG, completely wrong. Nigerians get plenty of other subsidies from the government. Forex is still being subsidized, healthcare is subsidized, rice is subsidized, pilgrimage is subsidized, university education is subsidized. By the way, forex subsidy means everything imported into Nigeria is subsidized. It was in 2012 that the PEOPLE of Nigeria missed the chance to save money by canceling fuel subsidy. Right now there's ZERO savings from fuel subsidy, understand that since maybe 2016 and definitely the last 2 years, it has been paid for by borrowing money. Nigeria never had the money, the government is BANKRUPT, that's why they had to stop fuel subsidy and devalue the naira.. Don't worry though it looks like the government will soon start subsidies for agricultural products. Happy times ahead. nairalanda1: Don't mind Nigerians and their delusions. I remember former President Jonathan was accused of stealing what, $40 billion? Good Luck to Nigerians! 1 Like 1 Share |

Kukutenla: I agree with EVERYTHING you wrote above EXCEPT the part bolded. Most Nigerians DON'T agree government is problematic ESPECIALLY if their TRIBE is allied with OR in control of the government. All to say this....diversity is a major problem in a democracy. The UK is much less diverse...it's 87% English tribe and 92% White. Add to that even the small tribes like the Scottish and Welsh have substantial AUTONOMY in many areas of life. Good Luck to Nigerians! 1 Like |

nairalanda1: How much are the Federal and 36 States' budgets for Agriculture each year? What are they if not a blanket subsidy for food? Agriculture receives the highest budget in the country each year and that is not changing soon. Do you want Federal and States budgets for Agriculture scrapped? You are right when you said, "We can't afford subsidies" but the reason you gave is secondary and inconsistent with facts. It is basically because of long-term mismanagement and corruption in the system, we would have had enough to sustain the subsidy as Angola and Algeria are doing presently. Btw, I was a departmental head in Oil and Gas at some time in my career hence I am conversant with the cost that has to do with the extraction industries. The Oil and Gas companies are making money hence don't pity them. Population is not a curse as some people were made to believe, it's a source of blessing if managed appropriately. 1 Like |

nairalanda1: Please...explain to me the correlation between nigeria's debt and the attitude of a theif....a theif doesnt care weda u debt is trillion dollars All the money nigeria borrows from the world bank and china....is it accounted for??.they never create projects that will seamlessly pay back the loans.... u now are wondering how we still have huge debt ..they borrow 100naira ..do 10 naira projects and steal the rest... ur leaders are all buying bullet proof cars...cost of governance is not reduced... ...they all fly abroad for health care... you seem not to realize how we have huge debt.......both oil revenue and borrowed funds is looted.... |
