The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Gani Adams, has faulted the hike in the prices of Premium Motor Spirit, known as petrol.

According to Adams, the fuel price hike is making life difficult for Nigerians, noting that the situation is biting hard.

Adams, who asked the President, Bola Tinubu, to swiftly address the attendant consequences of the subsidy removal, said that Nigerians can no longer bear the hardship they are experiencing.

Adams, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, said such skyrocketing increase in fuel price has never happened in Nigeria’s history.

According to him, there is no country in the world like Nigeria (a major producer of oil) where the citizens are groaning in pain over an insensitive increase in the prices of fuel.

“We know how much we buy fuel before now. Nigeria is yet to survive the subsidy removal that led to the sudden increase in the price of fuel from N187 to N500 per litre before it was jerked up now to N617 per litre within two months. It is painful. No sensitive government would be happy when the citizens are suffering.

“It is imperative for me to speak up, especially, with what we are experiencing now in the country. It is unfortunate. This is not what we expect from a president that is coming from the South West region of the country.

“As a product of this democratic struggle, a political activist and the father of the nation, President Bola Tinubu must know that the citizens are his children. Therefore, a father must work on the best way to solve the problem of the children.

“With the present situation in the country, three state governors have declared a three-day week for civil servants in their respective states. The national leadership of the College of Education Academic Staff Union had directed its members nationwide to attend their respective workplaces only two days a week.

“The new directive was premised on the recent price hike on fuel, and this has worsened the cost of transportation, food, and other essential commodities that has increased by over 300 per cent.

“All over the world, many things have been subsidised in the interest of the mass of the people. Power, health, food, and other necessities of life are being subsidised.

“Petrol is the main commodity that moves the economy. And now the same product is being sold for N617 per litre. It is unbearable. For instance, an ordinary Nigerian worker travelling from Mainland to Island on a weekly basis would spend 25 litres of fuel per day-that is over N15,000 naira.

“In a week, it is N75,000 per week, and in a month, it amounts to over N300,000 naira. That is too bad for Nigeria and Nigerians. Energy, including petrol, diesel, or gas needs to be subsidised because of productivity’s sake. No economy survives the high cost of energy.

“It is the responsibility of every government to subsidise food-that is what is called food security. When the government subsidises energy that is energy security.

“All over the world, governments are subsidising energy to boost productivity. It is sad that presently people are losing their jobs, more businesses are collapsing, companies are folding up and tension is heightened in the country.

“Hyperinflation is setting in and it shows nothing but the insensitivity of the new administration.

“Nigeria runs an informal economy and PMS is the most important energy source in Nigeria, therefore, President Tinubu has to retrace his step in order to save the country from this hardship,” Gani Adams said.

It's the neglect for me. A sensible government would have addressed the masses. Give them a reason to hold on and what you are putting in place to reduce the suffering. Tinubu is about to go the way of Buhari.

Subsidy is GONE!!!

Ever since the past two decades, these guys always blackmail every president in power by saying subsidy is a scam. Remove subsidy. Liberalize the market. Buhari is a thief for retaining subsidy. Bla bla bla.

All those years, I don’t know if people are daft not to know that removing subsidy means increase in petrol price.

During the last campaign. Tinubu campaigned constantky with the fact that he will remove subsidy, they all cheer him and everyone seems optimistic.

So why the tears now that the said subsidy was removed and the market freed for competitor?

Gani Adams should rather put pressure on Tinubu to roll out that palliative and cushion they want to roll faster. Anyone saying subsidy should be brought back is an enemy of progress.

Tomorrow now, if Tinubu reverse subsidy and then start borrowing massively or increase taxes, na these same Nigerians go come out dey kick the government for borrowing and protesting increase in taxes and etc.

It’s like this country is cursed. The president should just do what he think is best for the country and not mind most of these rabble rousers.

No matter what he does, they go complain. So better he do what he think is best and get all the complaint than he scared like Jonathan to do what he should have done and postpone the suffering to the future.

If tomorrow, FG can no longer pay civil servant salary or have enough money to build infrastructure and etc., na same Nigerians go come out to say ba because them dey loot the money and subsidy scam bla bla bla.

I now see the reason why some leaders pay deaf hear to some calls.

Yes he has the solution on paper.

Like removing subsidy and still selling the fuel for #150 like PDP opined yesterday. Na mumu kuku full Nigeria, they can believe anything.

I will reduce fuel to #50 naira and make naira $1 to 5naira if you vote for me. I will make sure all Nigeria gets 200k monthly as social benefit. Everybody can build house with mouth.

How can you remove subsidy and sell oil below the international price of crude itself?

The economy is heading towards a recession. The third one in eight years under APC. If it eventually happens, it will take a miracle for the country to ever bounce back cause that will mean an average of recession every two years.
Tinubu should return the subsidy and look for ways to get our refineries working then remove it.
This unplanned experiment has failed woefully!!

The problem with people like you is lack of understanding. May I ask if you buy the cloth you were at the "international price"?
Saudi sells crude to their local refinery well below the "international price". In fact, Russia sell crude in the international market, below the OPEC prescribed price. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. There is no such thing as international price. International price only exists to those who subscribe to it.
The price you are seeing is dictated by dollars and not any international price. Get that fact correctly and stop swimming in an ocean of ignorance

You don’t even know what you’re talking about. Is Russia part of OPEC in the first place?

Is Nigetria bound by any law to be a part of OPEC in the first place? Secondly, does OPEC stipulate that all crude oil sale by his member countries, be it domestic or foreign be according to their price?

No difference. The major candidates all wanted to remove subsidy. Subsidy has to go.

One said he would even remove it immediately.

We can't keep borrowing money to subsidize petrol consumption for Nigeria and many west and Central African countries.

Which money will he use to roll the palliative? He should borrow loan for that?

Or you think palliative is just small 10k or 15k? When we say palliative, it include minimum wage increase, agriculture fertilizers, commodities, massive investment in power/road and etc.

But before subsidy removal,fg do borrow money for subsiding fuel. Why cant the source money for palliative and pay from the money save from subsidy.

hope you even realised the borrow money for the judicial and NASS members?
no way tinubu fail to think this well.
he should hv consider masses before taking any decision that may cause hardship.
