Electricity Generation Drops 16% To 3,501MW by ogododo: 7:27am On Jul 21, 2023
Nigeria’s electricity gen eration, yesterday, dropped Week-on-Week, by 16.4 per cent to 3,501.20 megawatts, MW, from 4,187.6 MW recorded Thursday, last week.

Checks by Vanguard indicated the situation occurred because of many factors, including the poor state of plants and low gas supply to thermal plants.

The development has pushed the Electricity Distribution Companies, DISCOs, to embark on load shedding in order to spread the limited electricity to many at different times.

This is coming as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) says eleven electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, have filed an application for rate review with the commission.

The request for rate review, according to NERC, is premised on the need to incorporate changes in macroeconomic parameters and other factors affecting the quality of service, operations and sustainability of the companies.

Meanwhile, Powercom Smart Grid Nigeria (PSGN) has announced its acquisition of Kano Electricity Distribution Plc(KEDCO).

PSGN is a subsidiary of Powercom and specializes in delivering an “end-to end” Smart Grid/Smart Metering turnkey solution.

In a statement made available to Vanguard yesterday, PSGN said the acquisition presents a significant opportunity for KEDCO to implement a comprehensive turnaround plan aimed at improving performance and efficiency.

It stated: “PSGN Turnaround Plan encompasses a strategic approach to address the challenges faced by KEDCO and transform it into a highly efficient and financially viable electricity distribution company supporting 5 million customers.

“The plan focuses on revenue enhancement, operational performance optimization, revenue collection, customer service, and overall system reliability.PSGN will supply KEDCO smart electricity endpoints including the full backbone infrastructure to manage the grid.

“The project is meant to upgrade the existing distribution grid into a modern platform, addressing services such as: Revenue Enhancement, Reduction of Energy Losses, Debt Recovery, Reduction of Outages, Grid Optimization, Asset Recording, Asset Protection, Peak Load Management; Workforce Automation, reducing operational expenditure and improving customer service. PSGN ‘turnkey’ solution includes the Vending Platform and a Control Room with GIS visualization for grid management.”

Tinubu hasn't made any policy pronouncement regarding power generation since he was sworn in

It's seems power generation is not part of his #RenewedHopeShege agenda

Kano Distribution Company acquired due to poor performance. Extreme poverty from that axis while they focus on painting the Capital

Many on Nairaland said they had light for 4 days, this and that...

Nigerians have short-term memory. What a pity!!!

I believe they dropped it intentionally so as to force NERC to review and implement their proposed new rates.

Very sad situation.

Basically, the DISCOS are not being allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs.

At one point in 2017 , they even had their bills frozen for 2 years.

Naturally, one won't be able to do much improving with such issues. Government still sets their prices, and pays them a subsidy that is not enough for their needs.

So the result is poor power supply, poor distribution and low geberation

( Just to show you how bad our generation is, Lagos alone needs 10000 MW daily for 24 hour light)

Until DISCOS are allowed to charge cost reflective tarrifs, and until there is an end to power stealing, and until universal metering is a thing...we are not going to get 24 hour light.

You can only give what you have, not what you wish you have.

Three or 4 discos have gone bankrupt because socialism

(Disclaimer: I do not support APC, PDP, LP or Tinubu. A good way to understand our power sector is to google PwC's report on the power sector...Solving the liquidity crunch in the Nigerian power sector...published in 2018 which gives a good account of the problems.)

Abeg, let everything drop to zero so that we can start afresh. But, is it that Nigeria is so poor that it can't give us electricity all the time? The situation wasn't like this when we're growing up. In those days ECN, the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria, would inform you that they're going to stop transmission between so and so time of the day three days before the occurrence. And they would apologise for the disruption. The reason for Nigeria's retrogression starting from 1978 at the time of Obasanjo’s military government and 1999 should be investigated to know how Nigeria came to this sorry pass. All we're doing at the moment is patching a thread-bare cloth already torn into shreds. There's not much hope of obtaining the real thing from that effort.

It is quite shameful that since creation a country like Nigeria is going to and fro with power generation ( 1k - 5k mgw). Extremely disgusting and shameful. Spits on this nation.

The so-called Giant of Africa generating 3k megawatts of electricity. How can you be a giant when you don't have power?

Things that other countries do with mind-blowing simplicity become rocket science in Nigeria because everybody wan chop.

Nigeria needs a brutal, right-thinking leader to return people's brains to factory settings.

Somebody that hit the ground running is now crawling, thank God there's no PDP to blame again. After a disastrous 8years of APC now the journey continues into more abysmal.

The revolution is inevitable, you cant beat a child and prevent the same child not to cry. If we cant have a working government then I guess we could as well go back to the stone age where the survival is for the fittest.

We all saw a billionaire that humbled himself, went to the land of the pyramids to get first hand knowledge on how they achieved the constant power supply they are enjoying so as to implement it in our country yet he was mocked, abused, ridiculed as third class illiterate.

They went for a crooked first class of Chicago drug product and here we are.

How a complete dullard (buhari) and a senile, crooked, white substance lover deceived a whole SOPHISTICATED TRIBE should be studied in the highest citadel of learning.

So much for being a SOPHISTICATOR!!!

Before total deregulation, the discos should be mandated to meter ALL consumers. In fact, estimated billing should be banned thenceforth. Also, power theft should be heavily sanctioned by imposing Long prison terms, no option of fine.
