The University of Lagos, popularly known as UNILAG, is a distinguished institution known for its quality education and commitment to the development of human resources in Nigeria. However, the recent uproar on social media reveals a disturbing reality for many students - a staggering increase in UNILAG school fees. In a tweet that has now gone viral, a Nigerian man, Pamilerin Adegoke, lamented over the sudden surge in the tuition fees for his two sisters attending UNILAG. According to Pamilerin, one sister's school fees hiked from N16,000 to an incredible N100,750. His second sister didn't fare any better - her fees catapulted from N21,000 to a hefty N140,250. Pamilerin's words were as straightforward as they were unsettling. "I have 2 sisters in UNILAG. Their school fees just went up. School fees increased from 16k to 100,750 and 21k to 140,250." A simple statement, yet it encapsulates the anxiety and confusion of thousands of students and parents alike, grappling with this unforeseen change. The sudden escalation in UNILAG's school fees has generated waves of reactions from different corners. Many students and parents are lamenting the new financial burden, fearing that the inflated fees may lock out numerous aspiring students from obtaining quality education. For those unfamiliar with the context, UNILAG is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in Nigeria, boasting of producing well-rounded graduates who have contributed significantly to various sectors within and outside the country. The university's reputation has been built upon a fee structure that, until recently, was considered relatively affordable by many Nigerians. The steep increase in the school fees has, therefore, come as a rude shock to many. Several questions are being raised concerning the rationale behind the sudden increase in UNILAG school fees. While it's common knowledge that the cost of maintaining a high standard of education can be high, the difference between the old and the new fees is quite large, causing many to question whether the increased costs can be justified. Furthermore, the abruptness of the change has left many students and their families scrambling to make financial adjustments to meet the new demands. For families that had budgeted based on the previous fee structure, the news has created a significant financial strain. The viral tweet by Pamilerin Adegoke has shone a spotlight on the plight of numerous UNILAG students, leading to extensive discussions on the affordability of higher education in Nigeria. As the country grapples with economic challenges, it's vital that access to quality education remains within reach of the average Nigerian. As we delve deeper into this issue, it is clear that the spike in UNILAG school fees is not just a concern for students and their families, but a matter of national interest. Quality education should be a right and not a privilege reserved for those who can afford exorbitant fees. In conclusion, the hike in UNILAG's school fees has sparked a national debate on the state and affordability of higher education in Nigeria. The fate of thousands of students hangs in the balance as stakeholders deliberate on the way forward. This narrative underlines the importance of a robust and inclusive dialogue on educational policy that ensures access to quality education for all, regardless of economic status. https://antvt.com/unilag-school-fees-increases-from-16k-to-140k/ |

Semi-free lunch is over. I wonder if the trend is the same in Northern Nigeria. |

The only thing they know how to do is to be increasing the prices of things Did you sit down to reason whether they can afford it or not? Always running from the real thing, You that will be owing salaries for a whole year! So how will they afford it? How about increasing and maintaining standards and quality of goods and services (of which governance is a key component)? Impunity everywhere! An elected leader can decide to command/order the treasurer to open the country's treasury and start Looting at will and nothing will happen Very terrible country. |

VeeVeeMyLuv:come on now.... 16k for university for 2023? That is about $21, far less than I paid back when I was in school in that same Nigeria. |

Kobojunkie:Yes It is very low. But salaries and wages has to also go up commensurately to be able to afford these fees. Aswear these current salaries are so outdated, increments are long overdue. |

VeeVeeMyLuv:They have to bring in more in order to be able to pay more, right? And the may they bring in more is by hiking prices, right? Logically, you cannot expect world class salaries when customers pay near nothing for the product. |
