I knew this question was coming..
There was a time in Nigerian Uni, they were given free food, 2 people per room after graduation ready job plus official car
There was a time Nigeria was visa free to many countries in the world
I also did not enjoy all these since every generation deal with the challenges of their times
People adjust to realities of their times. This is the current reality
There are things your ancestors enjoyed that you wont and there are things you enjoyed that your children wont. And vice versa too

This here. Those who went before us were not 24 to a room of 8,were not doing Bush attack, did not have to make do with the same curriculum from the 70s, did not have to fetch water with bucket, did not have to worry about cults.

But on a serious note, I think u are saying all of this from a privileged position. If this kinda astronomical increment in school fees, general rise in price of commodities, reduction in ur sponsors' disposable income , over 300% increase in fuel price ,etc had al happened while u were in OAU ; I doubt u would've graduated as a Chemical Engineer.

That is a possibility. Like I said above, every generation deals with their own problem

My fathers generation lived when 2 people lived in a hostel room, I had to share room with 12 other guys,
They had their clothes laundered for them, I had to wash mine by myself
They got a ready made job after graduation with official car, I had to battle and struggle with thousands to write aptitude tests
Some of them traveled to America, UK Germany visa free, I had to hustle for mine

I can as well sit here and be telling them that until they make things visa free for me 20yrs ago,,,,

Every generation deals with its own challenges, The challenges when we had less than 3,000 Uni students all over Nigeria is different from when we have 300k and possibly 3m now

We adjust with every reality

You are the biggest beneficiary of what you choose to do with your life, After basic reading and writing, If you like become bandit, there are people who had the same opportunity as you and became doctors, If you like become agbero there are people with less opportunities who became successful businessmen

There are some of your classmates either in primary school, secondary or Uni who are doing way worse than you with the same opportunity

That's why I say u are speaking from a privileged position. People who speak from privileged position usually sit to analyze and justify why those coming after them would not and should not access some of the privileges they enjoyed.

Nigeria spends so much on things than are less important than to be saying they want to yank subsidy off education just like that.

Privilege? What privilege is that when I shared a room meant for 2 people with 13 other people?
What privilege was that when thinking bad at toilets I had to use can still induce vomit 20yrs later?
What privilege is that when I had to write job aptitude tests with thousands of people for 20 positions?

Where is my own privilege of having to travel without a visa or get a car after graduation?

Tertiary education is not a right, you dont need tertiary education to survive. Even in US I am against using tax payer money to pay for tertiary education

There are many guys who are traders, mechanics, Artisans, businessmen . Those who chose to go to University are not better than them nor have 5 heads so why should govt be spending to give the privileged subsidized education(Possibly from tax paid by everyone including the artisans) and not on those who didnt go to Uni
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DeadPresidents: 5:56pm On Jul 21, 2023
Primary and secondary education should be non-negotiable. Personally, i think government should ensure vocational trades (auto mechanic, fashion designers, electricians etc) are formalized and recognized with certificates to incentivize people to take them up. Our current system of over-emphasizing universities is doing more harm than good.

Any policy that puts decent primary and secondary education out of the reach of the poor is a stupid and deleterious policy. Even hyper-capitalist societies like the United States will not dare toe that path.

U still wan turn amala for this one?

The privilege is the education u got almost for free; that's why u can be a capitalist today.

Okay see now u said the basic education one should have is primary education, but we all know what lack of education has done to the north making young boys join bandits and young girls being married off at a very young age. What do u think will happen when the government takes this ur own stand of saying after primary school u decide ur fate ? Do u know how many bright minds that will get entrapped in the banditry business going on in the NorthWest?

The same education they give the North is what they give us in the South. Its the same UBE in South that applies to the North.

The same stand FG takes in Zamfara is what they are taking in Cross River. If they are having different outcomes then its not the problem of the FG

Unless you want govt to pay for uniform and boarding fees too

UBE in Nigeria covers Primary and beyond. Which is what you need for literacy

You are the one who has been clamoring for subsidized tertiary education for the past 3hrs

This is what I typed by urself na (See attached screenshot )

See where this discussion started was that the government has been subsidizing tertiary education before now and i don’t believe they should just yank it off without providing an alternative like interest free loan if the subsidy must go.

The government is yet to put anything like that in place aside from just reading it out to us in paper, yet government schools are already hiking fees . The education bank they proposed has not been established as we speak , how students can access the loan has not been critically discussed , the terms of the loan nobody knows about it . Why talking off the subsidy on tertiary education in a rush?

Everything i have achieved in life today lies on the strength of a strong primary school education. My popsy sought out the best school in our area and enrolled me there when he noticed my academic performance was dropping every term. Yeah, he wasn’t rich and the school fees were expensive but he felt it was worth it and he was not wrong.

When he died, i was in Primary 4 and his neer-do-well relatives tried to get my mother to enroll us in cheaper primary schools but she said fück no grin

Eventually, i attended a regular secondary school but that was inconsequential as the foundations were already set. My best friend in secondary who had a strong primary school is doing his masters in Robotics in the UK and looking at a PHD soon.

We need to improve quality of primary school education if we want to improve this country. In Germany here, you can’t teach at a primary school if you don’t have the equivalent of a masters degree in education training.

Thank you. I just read the news online now and I saw it was 45k before and the new fees are for new students only. The boarding fee is an optional fee, for borders only.

I've been trying to look for returning student fees but cant find it so I can know which fee they increased but I'm thinking probably the uniform and boarding fee.

Tertiary education subsidy is not needed, It doesnt affect your literacy, you want to become an Engineer a Doctor or an accountant, then that cost is on you. You shouldnt be given tax payers dollars from the guy who went to start business apprenticeship from JS3

Returning student fees still remaining the same. Probably less than 12k per year.
