Egypt Pays Fuel Subsidy, Generates Surplus Of Electricity. Can Nigeria Learn? by jmoore(m): 5:57pm On Jul 16, 2023 |
Egypt generates 59,000 megawatts of electricity and has produced an energy surplus equivalent to 27,000 . Egypt has functional refineries. They are self sufficient. Most of the refineries and power plants are owned by their government. Egypt is still paying fuel subsidy. But here in Nigeria, those who love the title 'his excellency' tell us that government can't run a business. They use this statement as a cover-up for their ineptitude. Nigeria failed to fix the power sector and decides to unplug the oxygen running the economy which is petrol. Most homes and businesses are powered by petrol in Nigeria because 5,000 megawatts can't be enough for over a hundred million Nigeria. If Nigeria was self sufficient in electricity, the subsidy budget won't be much. Because businesses and homes won't depend on petrol generators. Do we have any plan at all achieve 25,000 megawatts in four years? 9 Likes 1 Share |

There's no successful nation that doesn't subsidise for her citizens... Be it healthcare, mortgage , energy etc Only in Nigeria will subsidy be removed and a whole 500b will be earmarked for sharing.. 8k to ghost 12m families in 6months.. what a policy.. Rich will continue to grow while the poor die in penury... Renewed suffering 14 Likes |

jmoore:Egypt is a largely socialist economy... Do you want us to practice socialism? Do you? We are a capitalist economy ran by socialists who have no idea of what to do Removing subsidy is something we have to do.. But the issue is tinubu and his team have zero idea what to do Building refinery here , refining here won't make petrol cheaper in fact it might make it more expensive We need to produce things we import that we can produce Produce things we can export at a competitive price Solution like obi is is investment in SMEs What makes the situation is the president and his team not talking If obi was president he for done do 50 interviews... Telling us the real situation and plans 7 Likes |

jmoore:Whopping mind-boggling $162 billion is the foreign debt of Egypt ![]() That's the foreign debt of Egypt o! I am sure you don't know yet shouting Egypt upandan. Smh Watch how their debt ballooned with about $10 billion just within a year they restored subsidies and raised VAT to 14% because their public finance was in red and were borrowing to pay subsidies they brought back after attempt to reduce it in 2019. Egypt can have all the economists isonu here on Nairaland , we don't need them in Nigeria. Anyone recommending Egypt is a quack economist or being mischievous. We are far more populous than Egypt yet our foreign debt is just around $100billion o. After wrecking Ghana, you have stopped using Ghana as reference, it is now Egypt that is mounting debts and borrowing upandan to pay subsidies you are now on. Smh 2 Likes

Obaaderemi2:O ti o. They are our brothers and sisters. Let's wish they can make the necessary decisions before things go out of control. Lebanon is a horrible example of how subsidies wreck nations too. All the citizens of countries that borrow to fund subsidies are living a borrowed lifetime and slaves to their lenders. |
