We have crude oil. Why is Nigeria not refining its petroleum product here in Nigeria

We export crude oil to earn foreign exchange and import the refined products using same foreign exchange?

What exactly is the problem?

Saudi Arabia for instance has crude oil and refines its oil.

Not just Nigeria, Africa countries are usually sources of raw materials but end up importing finished products. Why is this?


Why are we still unable to refine our crude oil since 1956 that oil was discovered in Nigeria. Is Nigeria cursed? Is it our topography that’s not good for refining? Is it our weather? Or we don’t have the technical skills? Or just corruption ?

Stop asking irrelevant question.. try to make your findings... Do we have a functioning Refinery to "refine" the crude oil we produce??
If no, then we have to "Sell" the crude oil then "Buy" Fuel back to the country...

There were... But lack of maintenance... And from reduced productivity to total non-producing industry...
That's why sometimes you hear "Reviving our Refineries"...

I pity the masses that were celebrating dangote refinery.

I believe the same people behind the failure of Nigerian refineries are the ones that own Dangote refinery. Dangote is just a representative of all stakeholders of Dangote refinery. They are the ones eating Nigeria and sucking Nigeria dry while the masses suffer

most of the crude oil extraction is done by shell- uk owned, chevron Usa owned , mobil usa owned , total french owned ( . Government did not allow them get into refining during Gowon era so they focused on that one. While we destroyed the refineries slowly. We lack the technological capacity plus our inbuilt corruption and corner cutting.

When you hear of corruption in the oil sector...
Oil extraction is almost expense-free in the Nigerian government part.. they pay almost next to nothing for the extraction instead we collect tax from companies coming to extract...
Now, those revenues are very large...
Okay, use those revenues to develop and maintain our Refineries, no way.. stories upon stories...
Initially, when those Refineries were functioning we were having enough petrol for our local consumption...
But due to lack of maintenance, those Refineries began to underperform/under supply while our local consumption increases with our population, forcing the NNPC to buy "Refined crude (petroleum)" from outside to meet local demands..
So that's where we are today..

Fun Fact, most of those countries we buy from, don't produce Raw Crude oil as much as Nigeria.. but they have functioning Refinery...

Even if we have, we might still need to import to supplement what we have. Canada is one of the biggest producer of crude in the world and still imports refined petroleum.

Actually Dangote Refinery is not really a bad thing, it's just that it's capacity is very small as compared to what we consume...
But Dangote is a businessman, so he's not in anyway helping Nigeria...

Just hustle so you go fit buy fuel. Dangote refinery will drastically reduce importation.
And also i think our refinery are working not just producing enough capacity.

Nigeria is incapacitated in refining capacity. Not to talk of a country that is highly dependent on import

I heard one oil and gas expert saying this. He called some young european billionaires from countries like Switzerland and the rest..

Nigeria doesn't import as much fuel as the government would like to have us believe, if at all. We have four major refineries still functioning and many more modular refineries.

The propaganda about fuel importation is to justify high price of fuel. there was never anything like fuel subsidy . So they can keep hiking the price of fuel and call it subsidy removal.

The politician saying fuel subsidy is organised crime are almost telling you the truth although they are trying to deceive us into believing that fuel was subsidized and the subsidy needs to be removed.

The concept of subsidy and subsidy removal is the scam and the organised crime.

Yet mere individuals are able to build "illegal" refineries in Nigeria, that the government send the military to destroy. Think again!

Secondly, those guys don't buy crude, they steal it and cook it,
making 100% profit.

Have you tested the finished product? So it is only a refinery if you say it is?

May be are not permitted to buy the crude. Do you know more than 99% of crude stolen in Nigeria oil is stolen by foreign oil companies that extract the oil from the ground as well as corrupt officials .

The point I am making is that refining crude is not rocket science and the narrative that our refineries are not producing sufficient fuel is very much false.
