Hello fellow Nairalanders,

I find myself at a crucial crossroad in life and would greatly appreciate your valuable insights and diverse perspectives. I have worked diligently in a private organization for 15 years, managing to save up to N20 million. Additionally, I own a 3-bedroom apartment. and a few plots of land in three different states in Nigeria.

Current Situation:
Recently, I was disengaged from my job, and this has prompted me to contemplate a major life decision. I am 45 years old, and my wife is 42 years old. Together, we have three children, two of whom are in secondary school.

Contemplating Relocation:

Given the circumstances, I have been seriously considering the possibility of relocating to another country with my family via study route. Two countries have caught my attention: the UK and Canada. I believe that I still have around 15 years of active career working life by the Grace of God, and I am open to exploring new opportunities abroad for the betterment of my family's future.

Reasoning:
The motivation behind this move is to provide my children with a better education and quality of life while also embracing new experiences. However, I am fully aware that this is not without risks, as it would involve utilizing my lifetime savings and making a fresh start in a foreign land.

Seeking Your Advice
:
I humbly seek your honest advice and opinions on this matter. Here are some key points to consider:

Family considerations: How will relocating impact my children's education and overall well-being?

Age and career transition: Is starting anew in a foreign country feasible, considering my age and accounting background as my profession?

Financial stability: Should I be concerned about using my savings for this move? What steps can I take to ensure financial security in a new country?

Visa and immigration: What are the challenges and best practices in obtaining permanent residency in the UK or Canada?

Job opportunities: How promising is the job market for accountants in these countries? Are there viable prospects for career growth?

Investment options: Alternatively, what investment opportunities in Nigeria can provide a stable income stream for my family?

Conclusion:
I am deeply grateful for any advice, personal experiences, or suggestions you can provide. Your valuable insights will play a significant role in shaping this crucial decision for my family's future.

Thank you all for taking the time to read and respond to my post. Your support means a lot to me and will help me make an informed choice.

Warm regards,

N20M is about 20K Pounds, you will realize it amounts to nothing the moment you step your feet outside the shores of Nigeria. 20K pounds for a family of 5?

Please look for a good investment in Nigeria that will churn out good profits for you; make more money and send your kids abroad.

I don't think it's worth taking the risk. My opinion though.

Haba you make that alots of money in Nigeria now you want to japa honestly with that amount you have and you already achieve some things already my advice for you is stay in Nigeria setup and good work self employed and after your children complete there secondary school send them to abroad so they can have the future you plan for them and you self can take some vacations if you wish to visit other countries

Considering your age sir,I will advise you use like 3m to setup up a good business like car wash and barbers shop ,turn over from the business can feed the family and take care of children's school .You may save some money from the one you have ,that can be used to send at least you first child outside Africa for quality education, that I belief is a lifetime investment on your children.
May the great God water that which you have already.

I like the advice many have given you. Relocating to Canada or UK at your age may not be a good idea. For me, starting a good business in Nigeria that targets low income earners is a good opportunity. Alternatively, upgrade your CV, learn new accounting software skills and get another job in Nigeria.

Japa is the best thing you can do for yourself and your family. Forget any other advice, billionaires are finding it difficult to survive in this country, government policies are killing businesses on daily basis. My brother secure your future and that of your family by running to UK, Canada or Australia. Be wise, be guided, even if you invest 50m in it, it's worth it. I see no future here, the politicians are heartless. Move ......, Don't look back. It will not be easy initially, but you will surely balance. Move.........

Use that 3 land you have to aggressively start farming perishables. They don't require much care or space, but they yield aplenty with almost no loss and minimal use of fertiliser (If you want)

I will strongly advise you to embark on this noble adventure if you have the opportunity. Please do not listen to anyone advising you to stay back. For instance, we have up to one million Nigerians that are resident in the United Kingdom. Despite all the shout about how tough it is to settle abroad, I cannot count up to 0.1% of these residents who have gone back to Nigeria. Be mindful that 0.1% of 1million is 1,000. I am waiting for anyone to provide contrary figures.

What you are contemplating is called Economic migration which is even practiced by citizens in developed countries. For instance, there are 1.3million Britons currently residing in E.U. countries. So many went for better economic opportunities despite being citizens of the 5th largest economy in the world.

I relocated with my family at the age of 45 and my life has been reinvented beyond my expectations. This is within three years!

What you require is discipline, persistence and focus. There are abundant opportunities in the developed countries. The economy of these developed countries is primarily driven by the Private sector. The economic value chain is unbelievable which gives room for novel job roles.

When you relocate, simply upskill/reskill etc. if you require a corporate job. However, you can still earn a decent living with blue collar jobs as a warehouse operative, care worker etc. These roles are in abundance and you can never be out of work. With your wife, the monthly bills can be shared. Honestly, you both can get by except you wish to live an extravagant life of alcohol and clubbing.

If you are coming to the U.K, please explore organisations like Tritech, itonlinelearning, stl-training etc. They train you in Project Management and prepare you for job interviews. They also provide work references as you will execute live projects with them. With this skill, you can easily attract jobs paying £250 per day.

Farming is a great business that you can venture into. It is what I have engaged in and it is profitable. I live in Ota, Ogun State, you can buy land for farming or better still, come to Covenant University farm, they have acres of land for rent yearly and they also have equipment that you can rent for farm. there is a company in Igbesa that will buy your harvest. I wish you best of luck and God's guidance.

Age and career transition: Is starting anew in a foreign country feasible, considering my age and accounting background as my profession?

Sir, with your experience as an accountant. You're hotcake in most of these countries seeking skilled workers. If you have a Linkedin account (create one if you don't have) search for accountancy job and set your location to UK. Apply to as many as possible or use Indeed, jobserve, I don't believe schooling is the best way to go considering your age and experience.

My friend and his wife once made such decision. I advised against it, they said that thier definition of success is THEIR KIDS SCHOOLING IN USA.
7 years down the line, one kid in university, others doing well in high school but parents have been living from hand to mouth.
There isn't anything you could do with accounting degree. You would surely start afresh with other jobs that feeds you and family without savings.
The kids enjoy free secondary education, you labour Latour Latour. If you are the kind that can't stand having savings per month, you might not survive it.
Go to oyo, osun, states or ilaro side in ogun state, get big farm land against next year.
You can farm up to 100 acres of cassava, under good farm manager( with help of locals too), you would make unimaginable profit after one year.
Invest the remaining money in little thing to feed family before the harvest starts.
Planting season starts March, buy land learn it next year start work
I dof my cap for your intelligence advse.Only few are aware of this golden ideals. Iam 61 years old now.lf l should have this opportunity, l will do same. You and obasanjo with Atiku with be on level ground on agricultural matters

Better don't waste your 20 million naira o grin grin cheesy grin

To be honest @ Alejo2000 take this advise. As sweet as agriculture is don't let anyone sweet talk you into it. If you get a land faraway from where you live, who's going to monitor it? or you think agric is something someone will just do and leave it and you pray that the people in charge will be honest ? If you have no passion for agriculture and you're not going to be there to monitor it yourself please stay away.

If you have a business you've been doing already, this is the time to maybe try to expand and try and focus on it. If you've not been doing any form of business before now, "maybe you're not a business type" instead repackage your CV with the experience you have and start applying for sponsorship jobs in the UK . I see you're a chartered account don't limit yourself , take a short sales analytics course and add that to your CV.

In all you do , please don't let anyone sweet talk you into agriculture oh , especially when you know you won't be present.

Too many reasons not to go!!!
Your motivation alone is counterproductive: your children can't be handled as well as if you are in Nigeria... You can't touch them over there, they are exposed to too many vices over there
Workwise: Going at this age, u would have to keep working into old age to maintain bills. Here at least, u can have some property or small business to pay your bills.
Racism is very real- to you and your children!!!
Socially, u would miss the company of your close family and friends and the West is a lonely place.Nobody cares about u.
Even economically, ur profile (No IT, Medical or consulting skills)seems like one that will struggle with bills and do lots of odd jobs!!!
In short, I imagine you will thoroughly regret moving if you do!!

My brother.

I was in a similar spot about 2 years ago.
Lost about 15million to investing in business in Nigeria. Not worth it (for me)

I made the move to travel out at 42. Left my wife and 3 children back in Nigeria.

It was the best move I ever made.

Pray about it and if you have the leading move. No regrets, absolutely none.

Indecision might be costly. Move.
Canada has opened tap now. Use it quickly. UK is closing tap, not a good spot right now!

UK and Canada shouldn't be on your list because of your age and available funds. Please consider scandevian countries e.g Finland and Sweden. These countries don't discriminate against age, they gives people equal chances regardless of your age. We have people over 40years dah are studying first degree in Finland. Finland is cheaper and safer.

Although French is not an easy language when learning it for professional application, he may end up with blue collar jobs in Quebec, but that is his best bet. However his children will be the main beneficiaries of such a move.

At OP,

I foresaw your predicament in my case 2 years ago. I am currently 48 and my wife is 39. 2 years ago I made a life changing decision.

I sent my wife to Australia on a student visa utilizing all my life's savings. Today, she has stabilized a little. Though she is still a student as she had to change her course of study from accounting to social work.

Currently, her employers are planning to sponsor her nomination for PR. All the necessary documentations have been completed.
She is doing pretty well and has progressed in her pursuit of CPA certification.

She has advised me to commence study for CPA immediately and that is what i am currently doing.

Hopefully, before the end of this year, I will be on my way to Aussie with my 2 children.
