The Hypocrisy Of The Poverty Statistics Reports From Statisense by Unbiased1: 3:59pm On Jul 31, 2023 |
In November 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics released its detailed report on poverty situation in Nigeria. In the report, it was confirmed that Nigeria has 133 residents who are multidimensionally poor. The report also showcased a breakdown of the Poverty index based on the states and geopolitical zones. While this report was very clear and well detailed our attention has been drawn to the pattern at which some media outlets have propagated the news since November 2022. Our focus in this writeup is the manner at which a so-called statistical outlet on Twitter has been reporting this news. The handle called Statisense prides itself as a platform that releases statistics about various topics. On the issue of the Poverty index in Nigeria, Statisense was one of the first media outlets on Twitter to release the news. Below is a screenshot from the their tweet. 3 Likes

Over time, the platform has continued to release more reports focusing on mainly one geopolitical zone of the country, the South East. From the NBS report, the South East of Nigeria is the only geopolitical zone that has up to 50% of its population above poverty. This report seems not to have been received well by the people behind the Statisense account. Ever since the release of the report, the controllers of the account have been releasing their own versions of the report, fine-tuning it to portray the South East as the poverty capital of the country. First, they released a report about tagged "Multidimensional Poverty per Square mile in Nigeria". It is a fact that the South East of Nigeria is the smallest region in the country by a huge margin. In fact, if the size of the South East is multiplied by 2, it will still be the smallest geo political zone in the country. So in that report released by Statisense, the South East was recorded as the poorest region in the country based on landmass which was considered by many to be a very misleading report as landmass has nothing to do with poverty index. This was one of the first attempt by the platform to place the South East as the poorest region in the country against the actual report from he NBS. Next was a report released few days ago by the same platform about the South East where it talked about the South East having up to 50% poor people. It should be noted that this platform has never reported about the poverty in other regions with the same energy at which it carries the news about th East. These repeated reports about poverty in the South East sends the wrong message to uninformed Nigerians making them believe the East is filled with poverty stricken people while the opposite is the case as the South East not only has the lowest percentage of poor people but also has the lowest population of poor people in the Nigeria and it's the only region in the country with up to 50% of its population above the poverty index. While we consider only 50% of the region's population to be above the poverty index as a horrible thing, you can imagine the poverty level in other regions that don't even have up to 50% of its residents above poverty. 8 Likes

We would like to state that no matter how many times they release poverty reports about the South East, it can never change the fact that the South East remains the geo political zone with the lowest number of poor people in Nigeria both by percentage and by total population and it will continue to reduce within the coming years. Statisense should put in as much energy it uses in portraying the South East in bad light in also releasing the reports from other geopolitical zones. Below are images of the actual report from the National Bureau of Statistics. 8 Likes 1 Share

Unbiased1: Ok. Forget Statisense. Below is directly from NBS Across the geo-political zones, the child MPI shows higher poverty in the North-East and North-West (where 90% of children are poor) and lower poverty in the South-East and South-West (74% and 65.1% respectively). https://nigerianstat.gov.ng/news/78#:~:text=Highlights 1 Like 1 Share |

Twistaray: This a report of only child poverty. The NBS released a PDF file of the full report and the South East has the lowest number of poor people in both percentage and population including children, women and all human beings living there. 7 Likes 1 Share |

EmperorCaesar: This is not a matter of rejecting their report. Why are they releasing multiple reports about the South East as if the South East is the only geopolitical zone in that report? I won't be surprised if they release another twisted version of the report about the east next month. Let them release the poverty reports from other regions with the same energy, period. As we all know that that the South East has a good number of light skinned people, I won't be surprised if they released another poverty index called "Poverty in Nigeria per Light Skinned People" and the South East will be placed at number 1 again. 7 Likes 1 Share |

EmperorCaesar: Lol. I did not reject their report. Stop twisting my statement or are you also a staff of Statisense? What did they mean by "Poverty per Square kilometer"? What kind of useless statistics is that? If not because they had ulterior motives, how does landmass relate to poverty? 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Unbiased1: Lmaoo. The index covers both people/adult and children. 63% of persons living within Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor. Can you read and do you understand English? It's an overall stats that covers regions, people, children, and states respectively. Lm.aooo |

All this statistics is not my issue... I seriously don't understand why someone from the middle belt would be poor... Ok let me rephrase... I don't get how this much people from the middle belt can be poor South East where I come from is the least endowed really Middle belt have no excuse really This communities have endless lands Can't this communities come together form a cooperatives meet banks, use their land as back up... Collect loans to buy farm imports and machineries Say $2 million dollars... Improved seeds, machineries Farm 50× what they farm on a normal Even of its cassava... A community can farm 5000 hectares in Benue or Niger or nassarawa With improved species 30 tons per hectares is achievable Community gari processing set up 30 x5000 hectares that's 150,000 tons of cassava minimum... Say 10% is lost that's 135,000 If sold raw at 25,000 per ton . .. That's 3.4 billion roughly.... If it cost 150,000 to plant and harvest 1 hectares that's 750 million 2.6 billion .. Say 600 million is paid to banks for part of loan 2 billion... If u have 50 families contributing land That's 40 million per family... If it's 100 that's 20 million per family If they contribute 10 million each they can set up gari, ethanol, cassava chip factories in their village to increase income even Mehn I really don't get it at all 3 Likes |

Twistaray:Hi You are annoying oo, honestly. Can't you read? The article speaks about the poverty index in general but the percentage you were quoting was the one that represented child poverty. Oga go and read the report you posted again and stop disturbing me. Let me highlight the portion of that article for you again: "Child poverty is prevalent in rural areas, with almost 90% of rural children experiencing poverty. Across the geo-political zones, the child MPI shows higher poverty in the North-East and North-West (where 90% of children are poor) and lower poverty in the South-East and South-West (74% and 65.1% respectively). The incidence of Child MPI is above 50% in all States and greater than 95% in Bayelsa, Sokoto, Gombe and Kebbi." Please read like someone that studied English in school abeg. It is stated there clearly "child MPI". As for the Statisense post, that is what they are known for. Before the National Bureau of Statistics released their report in November, Statisense had already tweeted up to 3 times about the poverty index in Nigeria where it portrayed the South West as the region with the lowest poverty until NBS destroyed their fake stats in November. Seems they have started again. The report from the NBS is the only valid report and not the nonsense repeatedly been uploaded by Statisense. Only a new report officially published by the NBS for 2023 will be accepted not this nonsense. As I said before, go the NBS website and download the original report and stop using this nonsense from Statisense. 1 Like |

Unbiased1: Don't mind their foolish and senseless propaganda. Anyone with common sense knows that SW is the poverty capital. Even SS is far better than them. Igbos dominate in education, trade, craft and local industry. You can't be far ahead in these vital sectors and not have the least poverty. Again, take a look at rural and urban areas of SE then compare with that of SW. You will see a world of difference! The SW people lives mainly very poor ghetto conditions both in their rural and urban areas. Which is a clear evidence of generational multi-dimension poverty!!! Yet they keep deceiving themselves. This is the information age, so all their shenanigans and cheap propaganda is easily exposed. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Op leave them. Propaganda is different from reality. I recall how some years back,we use hear to that Osun economy is bigger than that of the whole south East, then recession and COVID-19 came, we know the people that nearly died from hunger, we also know the geopolitical zone that is the most indebted. Now two months into the agbado illegitimate presidency, they are already protesting in Ibadan and Osun because of hardship where as other regions are calm, and tomorrow you will see them churning out fake statistics. 4 Likes 1 Share |
