Nigeria has thousands of monarchs. Every community has one. These guys have literally no use in the society. They just sit in their palaces and receive free money from the government. Some even deprive their subjects from basic amenities. We all know of one Oba who held COVID 19 palliatives in his palace out of greed instead of distributing them to the poor people of Isale Eko.
Yes you are right but government still recognizes them.

Is "Oba" his title ?
Why don't you call him by his title ? I bet you don't even know it. You guys need to stop pretending to know things you don't know.

There is a reason the monarch of Russia was called the Tsar and not the king, there is a reason the monarch of Germany was called the Kaiser and not the king ! You call monarchs by their title, that is why the Oba of Benin is called the Oba ! You don't copy and paste culture. Use your own titles ! If you actually know them.

The way you guys are obsessed with Benin is incredible, what in hell links Benin to this event, yet you had to mention the Oba of Benin whose title your monarchs keep using fraudulently as if they have forgotten their own titles. You clearly lack understanding of history and seem to believe the current political structure in the land mass of Nigeria has always been in place.
Let me open your eyes a little, here is a Precolonial map of Africa, locate Benin on it, and look for Ife on it. That will tell you the difference in importance between Benin empire and Ife village !
Do you know how insulting it is to say that the king of a large sovereign country got his crown from a village head called Oni of Ife ?

Most of you guys don't understand that Benin Kingdom/empire was a country ! An independent country until it lost a war to the UK! What exactly was Ife if not a village !

Where did you get this map from?

hey you, students of haphazard history, I never knew that the Benin empire extended into the modern day Cameroon, Equatorial guinea, Gabon and Benin republic. could there be an error of information to the European drafter of the fabled map or this is a copy solely owned by the king of old Benin empire.

the Yoruba Benin people and kings have certain commonalities between them better left to classroom historians with appropriate training.

there are enough archeological artifacts both available and hidden in the ground that belonging to the two tribes to provide evidence to whomever is interested in the commonalities.

inter tribal pronouncements in the Nigerian landscape is not sufficient to rewrite old antecedents. we are not people given to destroying old records and traditional practices like some travelers on cattle tracks.

additionally, the colonial map you are glowingly displayed is errors due mainly because by the time of the map very few Europeans has set foot on African soil and thereby there was little or no interaction between the Europeans and the interior landmass of Africa.

if you notice that river Niger is missing, the delta tributaries are missing several rivers in the African interior were missing. the map was drawn by the Europeans because they always need some paper information to make progress on their search for true status of things and subject matter. unlike you laying claim today as a show off with documents that you can not relate to properly. indeed you should be ashamed of yourself and your poor judgement on the people on nairaland.

The map was made in 1747, were you born by then ?
In case your level of education is too low, let me inform you that as can be seen in the map negroland was not a country but a region.
I don't know if you are aware but our ancestors didn't refer to Africa as "Africa" that name is from the Greeks or the Romans. In case you also do not know, our ancestors didn't refer to the slave coast as "slave coast".
Regions get names given to them by those who make the maps, what matters are the countries.
This is a map made by someone who was alive and making maps and visiting our region in 1747. But you who didn't witnesses that period, you believe that by vertu of your DNA, you magically know better.

Since he wasn't brave enough to deny Ife totally he concocted the tale of a wanderer prince.
Ife had never claimed to be invincible and Modakeke issue is till an intra-ethnic issue.

If I remember correctly, the entire Africa was populated by negro people in 1747 except for a few places in North Africa. So, which part of Africa was Negroland and which part was not according to your map?
The map was based on the imagination of those who made it. There was no Negroland region in Africa in 1747.

Benin Republic got its name in the 1970's.
The only Precolonial country called Benin is Benin kingdom. (And Benin city is clearly a part of Benin kingdom in the map) And you are clearly confusing Benin kingdom with Benin city. Benin city is only the capital of Benin kingdom. And you started by telling me to "be educated" 😅 Nigerian f**ls whom are so arrogant that they convince themselves that they "know better", it is hard to have conversations with you guys.
