Are you telling us that no questions were asked because the man served previously as a minister and governor, despite the fact that he belongs to a different party? Does this really make sense? Nigerian politics is on a different level. 1 Like |

Tomek09:Nothing they would have done. He that pays the pipers dictates the tune. When PDP government collapsed at the center in 2015,Rivers state and Akwa Jbom state become the major if not the only financier of the party in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT. So Wike has to exercise the most power in the party. |

The same Senate that said it won't be business as usual , I still believe we don't need the American type of democracy in Nigeria. It's waste of resources. |

He said Wike had appeared before the Senate for screening when he was nominated as a minister by ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan. Because he appeared once that's why they didn't grill him.... How many years back...! Unserious senate |

SmartPolician:I was asking the same question too, how does the screening work, when they don't even have portiolio, so what will the Senate be accessing? |

Image123:then what is the purpose of screening then? Are you not suppose to judge their ability, knowledge understanding based on the ministry they plan to occupy? Is that not how things were done in the past? So why call it screening? What will the Senate then be accessing? |
Re: Why Senators Didn’t Grill Wike — Akpabio by Dittodat: 8:38pm On Jul 31, 2023 |
SmartPolician: I totally agree with you on this one. The law should say that anyone nominated should already be assigned a ministry; hence it will allow for proper verification and questioning of their capacity to perform. I'm against this process of just sending names without portfolios. |

leokid866: Tinubu won't make that mistake. Wike is not a technocrat but rather a push and start slave driver. Tinubu knows the implication of putting someone like wike in a sensitive ministry like petroleum unless he, tinubu, will be the senior minister and wike junior. As a rivers resident, I can tell you that will is not a good manager of men and resources. About will come to the open whenever he losses his grip on Rivers state govt house. What you see and feel as peace in rivers is a serious case of suppression and oppression thru the instrumentality of state. This is my humble opinion about Wike's personality and his chances of becoming the petroleum minister. |

What a useless and hopeless country! The so-called Senate needs to do away with the appearance of these appointees for confirmation before it. In the Nigerian context, the appearance of a ministerial appointee before the Senate committee serves no useful purpose. It's more or less a mere formality and a right of passage for these nominees. The process itself is totally flawed from the beginning as these men and women of easy virtue are nominated not for specific positions. Otherwise, how can you appoint a minister NOT for a specific portfolio before he appears for confirmation by the Senate? In civilized societies, individuals are nominated to specific positions in government before appearing for confirmation by the Senate. For instance, when Lyod Austin was appointed as secretary of Defense, he knew what portfolio he would be heading and so are the Senators who would grill him during his confirmation hearing to make sure that he was qualified for the position. The same thing with Tony Blinken for Secretary of State. None of them were put as heads of their various departments after they were confirmed by the Senate. So, your Senate confirmation process is NOTHING but a JOKE and a waste of precious time and effort! |

Shattuck: They were asked questions na, you can watch it or rewatch it on youtube. And also watch past screenings. Most of Nigeria's screening at Senate level is usually take a bow. i am not historically aware of any minister that did not pass Senate screening since 1999. No be by Senate screening or even CV. Minister's role is administrative. They are not expected to know how to sow cloth or cut hair or change oil filter. 1 Like |
