Genesis 11:1-9

11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.

4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.

6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.

9 That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Yet God has no problem with aeroplanes, jets, rockets, satellites, the international space station, and so one. In other words, God is perfectly okay with space exploration. Yet God was 'intimidated' watching the people build the tower of Babel, a city which would reach heaven.

Apparently, the passage shows that God wanted them scattered all over the face of the earth. God wanted exploration of the earth first. They did not want that - they wanted to stay in Shinar (no movement). That is not how to replenish the earth which was the blueprint given to Adam.

What does genesis 10:5 mean?

Space exploration is not a problem to God. He was angry because the then people were working against God's agenda of spreading to cover the earth. Now, there are no places on earth that are not belongings to a people on the world map. In fact we are working towards colonizing Moon and Mars. If it is against his idea, He will still prevent one way or the other.

Again, we can assume the story is nothing but a myth to explain why we speak different languages but we now know it isn't true. They weren't all created the same time; some are extinct, still evolving, and others being created. There are over 7000 languages spoken today.
