PRESS STATEMENT

NNPC, NIPCO PARTNER TO DELIVER CNG TO NIGERIANS

…In Compliance with the President's Directive

As part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited’s commitment to providing cheaper alternative fuel to motorists, the company is happy to announce a strategic partnership with NIPCO Gas Limited to deploy Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the country.

This landmark collaboration aims to expand our CNG infrastructure, improve access to CNG, and accelerate the adoption of cheaper and cleaner alternative fuel for buses, cars and Keke NAPEP, which will significantly reduce the cost of transportation and engender sustainable national economic growth.

Under the NNPC-NIPCO strategic partnership, 35 state-of-the-art CNG stations will be constructed nationwide, including three (3) Mother stations.

Once fully operational, the stations can service over 200,000 vehicles daily, thereby significantly reducing the cost of automobile fuel for Nigerians and the cost of transportation.

The project will be rolled out in phases. The first phase, comprising 21 CNG stations, will support intra-city transportation and be ready by the first quarter of 2024; While the second phase, comprising 35 CNG stations, will support inter-city transportation and will be ready by late 2024. This will be further complemented by an additional 56 stations to be deployed by NNPC Retail across the country.

NIPCO Gas Limited is currently operating 14 CNG stations across Nigeria and has converted over 7,000 vehicles to run on CNG. NIPCO’s technical competency and field experience will bolster this initiative's success and amplify its positive impact on the Nation's economy.

This initiative will leverage Nigeria's abundant natural gas resources to bring multiple benefits to Nigerians, including access to cheaper fuel, reduced cost of transportation, reduced carbon emissions, create new business value chains and streams of job opportunities.

NNPC Limited expects further private sector participation by oil marketing companies to broaden CNG penetration and availability.

NNPC Limited remains committed to reliably delivering energy while continuously creating value for Nigeria’s prosperous future alongside our partners.

Why were these policies and modalities not set into motion by Buhari since 2021 so that by 2022 or early 2023, we will be reliant on CNG then fuel subsidy can be removed.

Why commencing this policy that as they said will be completed early next year ? Why put the cart in front of the horse instead of horse in front of cart? This thing should had been done and concluded before subsidy was removed.

Our misleaders like to suffer us. This is how they came about with new currency and cashless policy that they made no provisions for.

This is commendable but damnly late.

Unnecessary sufferings will be created.

I guess the removal of petrol subsidies has made it more viable.

naptu2:

I remember that, back in the 1980s, NNPC regularly exhibited a made in Nigeria peugeot 504 that ran on gas, with the promise that such cars would go on sale in Nigeria "next year".

naptu2:
Let me clarify about Peugeot 504. PAN continued making Peugeot 504 in Nigeria, when other countries had stopped producing, it for specific reasons.

The original goal of the 1969 auto conference was to produce a Made In Nigeria car. Bedford had been doing CKD since 1959, but Gowon wanted a completely made in Nigeria car. Peugeot took this challenge very seriously.

They had been increasingly sourcing parts in Nigeria and they kept the public informed about it. So you'd hear announcements like 70% made in Nigeria, 80% made in Nigeria, etc.

You could win a 504 if you hit a hole in one at the Nigerian golf tournament at Ikoyi Club in the 1980s. It was heavily marketed.

Peugeot had a joint venture with the Nigerian Gas Company (a subsidiary of NNPC) to produce a Peugeot 504 that ran on gas (1989). There was a lot of publicity about it, but NGC did not fulfil its part of the obligation (there were no filling stations equipped with gas dispensers).

So this was a thing of pride for PAN. They had built a Made In Nigeria car and they wanted it to go on forever, so they kept re-inventing it. Adding plastic here and there, until they finally stopped making it in 2005. They were still re-modelling the cars in 2008.

naptu2:

You don't understand. The first time that I saw a compressed natural gas filling station in Nigeria was in 1989. That's almost 31 years ago. How many of these stations exist across Nigeria today.

Peugeot had committed to making Peugeot 504 cars that ran on compressed natural gas, expecting that there would be filling stations across Nigeria, but how many of these stations are in Lagos? How many are in Abuja? How many are in Enugu? Yet this is 31 years later.

naptu2:
Once again, sometime in the 2000s, a subsidiary of the NNPC ran a programme in Benin City to convert vehicles to run on CNG. Many vehicles in Benin now use CNG and they built 15 CNG stations in the city. However, they did not extend this programme nationwide.

The Federal Government has rolled out an autogas programme called the National Gas Expansion Programme.

The programme involves the conversion of fuel-powered cars, generators from petrol to gas. It is aimed at deepening domestic usage of netural gas in its various forms.

The programme is expected to extend operations to all states of the Federation.

It is also in line with the Federal Government’s plan to make gas the first choice source of cheaper and cleaner energy.

While the event is holding in Lugbe, Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari is attending virtually from the presidential villa.

Other dignitaries at the event include the Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari; the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva.

The Minister of State for Petroleum at the event handed over CNG-powered mass transport buses to the Nigeria Labour (NLC).

The Federal Government Autogas program is expected to deliver at least one million vehicle conversions by the end of 2021.

please this is the reason why we’re grappling with high cost of living in Nigeria. This was only in few states and how many states have we?

There should be AT LEAST, if e too small, one CNG conversion centre in each state of the federation by now before fuel subsidy’s removal is implemented.

But here we are.

PMS subsidy was partly responsible for investor and stakeholder apathy.

Petroleum marketers are currently jostling for access to the N250 billion intervention fund for the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) following recent petroleum subsidy removal.

To this end, industry operators are looking forward to a pleasant operating environment which subsidy on petrol had not allowed over the decades.

Key investors are considering major investment decisions in the Compressed Natural Gas(CNG) space which they see as viable alternative to petrol. following exit of subsidy regime by President Bola Tinubu.

According to LEADERSHIP findings, some companies are about making fresh investments, specifically keying into the federal government’s gas expansion initiative.

LEADERSHIP gathered that NIPCO Plc has spent well over $100 million in gas infrastructure development which has resulted in key projects like pipeline construction, inauguration of over 12 CNG stations providing gas to motorists.
