Niger’s military rulers have asked for help from the Russian mercenary group, Wagner as the deadline set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the release of the country’s detained president draws near.

ECOWAS had given the coup plotters a seven-day ultimatum last Sunday to release the president or face possible military intervention by the West African regional bloc.

Al Jazeera reports that the request came during a visit by a coup leader – General Salifou Mody – to neighbouring Mali, where he made contact with someone from Wagner, Wassim Nasr, a journalist and senior research fellow at the Soufan Center, told The Associated Press.

“They need [Wagner] because they will become their guarantee to hold onto power,” he said, adding the private military company is considering the request.

Niger’s military government faces a Sunday deadline set by the regional bloc known as ECOWAS to release and reinstate the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who has described himself as a hostage.

Defence chiefs from ECOWAS members finalised an intervention plan on Friday and urged militaries to prepare resources after a mediation team sent to Niger on Thursday was not allowed to enter or meet with military government leader General Abdourahmane Tchiani.

After his visit to Mali, run by a sympathetic military government, Mody warned against military intervention, promising Niger would do what it takes not to become “a new Libya”, Niger’s state television reported.

Niger has been seen as the West’s last reliable counterterrorism partner in a region where coups have been common in recent years. Military leaders have rejected former coloniser France and turned towards Russia.

Wagner operates in a handful of African countries, including Mali, where human rights groups have accused its forces of deadly abuses.

Please check your map of Benin again. It seems you did not take geography. The Northern part of Benin shares border with Niger and are culturally related. There are Hausa there and other Northern muslims in Benin like Northern Nigeria.

Ecowas will not fight any war with Niger. Niger can't even function without Ecowas. Ordinary sea import, electricity, banks etc, they cannot run on their own as a nation. Anyone expecting anyone to go to war with a country in abject poverty like Niger does not mean well for Niger.

There will more likely be no war yet the coupists will be sacked. Either a counter coup or arrest of the man. Niger does not have an army and in fact, Nigeria is the one that dashes them military hardwares.

Nigeria is poised to start the supply of Gas to Europe, who will pay billions in $$$ for this favour. Russia, who just cut off their Gas supply to Europe would do everything to thwat Europe's plan to get Gas from Nigeria by gaining control over countries along the path of the Gas pipeline from Warri Nigeria, supplying Europe. Niger is the perfect country for Russia to distabilize in order to jeopardize the Gas project.

For Russia, its pay back. For Nato, its survival. Winter is coming and Europe will need Nigerian Gas to power their heat systems. For Tinubu, its about making billions from the Gas deal, anything that would stand in the way of this deal, Tinubu will destroy. All of these will come at the expense of the lives and properties in Northern Nigeria. So expect a war in the scale of the Russia and Ukraine war in that region. if the war starts and is sustained for months, don't be suprised if the Gas terminal at Warri is bombed by Russian Drones. When this war begins, it will be difficult to stop....Now is the time to stop it by all means. But my thought is that the powers behind Tinubu are so strong, he cannot call the shots, he cannot stop the war even if he wants to. Europe will freeze to death during the winter if they don't get the Gas from Nigeria.
