How Does Nairaland Algorithms Work? by thetechbroh: 9:34pm On Aug 11, 2023 |
Does anyone has any ideas how the nairaland algorithms work especially as regards getting views for a post? Please be kind to share. Thanks a bunch. |

thetechbroh:It depends on how people do it. If you see it from the point where the first in last out took the position, it makes it faster and vis a vis. It actually a matter of positioning and time. |

OgogoroFreak: In that case, one must experiment with different time of the day to see when works best. So far, I haven't seen frequency of posting making any difference. Maybe I missed it though. Thanks og²oroFreak for the heads-up. I think I know where to start experimenting. |

thetechbroh:Though, Nairaland frontpage is moderated by admins not by an algorithm, your post doesn't really need to be on the frontpage to get seen. One of the few ways to get more views is to appear on the list of trending topics and hot topics in sections of the forum. Nairaland uses the time a post was created, the views and replies a post gets to sort this. If you are interested in seeing how nairaland works under the hood, I built a nairaland clone script earlier this year using laravel php framework and I was giving it out, check my threads you should see it |

Paystack:You seem to underestimate nairaland a lot, nairaland has an antispam bot and also uses an algorithm to sort post on the trending page and other sections of the forum, ads on nairaland are also served and billed using an algorithm. |

YoungCabal: In today's world an intermediate dev should be able to replicate that in a portfolio project. Anti spam bot that just check for duplicate comments or post on specific time intervals and ban. Some basic algorithm Very dull bot |

Paystack:Hahaha ! Content moderation isn't easy to implement algorithmically even with machine learning. Hope you know that facebook and twitter and most of these social networking sites using AI employ hundreds of human moderators on the side to contain spam |

YoungCabal: Is Nairaland not basic or not? Most of the algorithms Nairaland uses was shipped default in this script. Nairaland at its core is just a script even you can access and replicate. Most of the custom algorithms where created by Seun with his mediocre PHP and Python |

Paystack:Lol! Have you seen smf source code before ? I don't mean the current version, go and check version 1.x.x and see the logic and sql queries, so many builtin language function were lacking in php and mysql and had to be built by smf developers, you had to be really good to understand it, talk more of rewriting it in another language, it wasn't beans. As at that year, if we were to be honest, Seun was a genius. We just have to give him the credits. He just got lazy and refused to upgrade, that's the only valid reason to roast him. 1 Like |

YoungCabal: He's a lucky guy that's all. He was lucky enough to build Nairaland forum when very few people in Nigeria knew what the internet was. He was lucky to be a pioneer... unfortunately he's not a visionary or someone who can make something great. For almost 20 years now Nairaland have been stagnant... same progress from say 10 years ago... no major improvements or change, anyone can scrape every inch of data on Nairaland... anyone can create millions of accounts here, anyone can build a bot to spam everywhere... Nairaland is lucky not enough companies are interested in forum style business ... if not it would have been dead and buried long ago. |

Paystack:Lol! Just a lucky guy ? Nah! I will say a lucky genius. There were competing forums that died in the early days of nairaland. It might shock you to know, nairaland was loved back then so much, you see this design some of us hate ? People worshipped it and sang praises for it. All the other forums only worked on PC and lacked the features nairaland had back then, nairaland was the home of innovation, it had likes, followings and followers and worked well on mobile browsers. Even mark zuckerberg success was based on luck but we can't say he was just lucky |

Just like everything in Nigeria if you get connection or if one mod like you, it'll increase the chance of your stuff entering frontpage. |

YoungCabal: Well if you say so. Who am I even to judge the guy when I'm yet to build or do anything worthwhile or remarkable |

Paystack:I don't think so. Nairaland is a product of Seun putting his nose to the grindstone until his dreams self-actualized. It didn't come to him by chance or good fortune. Paystack:I am in total agreement here. NL was birthed same period as Facebook and it's senior to Twitter. Seun didn't think about taking it global or at least to the African market. We should have been having our own indigenous Big Tech firm in Nigeria if he had done so. The 2000's was a period when US and European VC's were doling out cash to everybody and their mom who had an internet business so I wonder why Seun didn't capitalise on that. He had a good MVP, a generous amount of daily active users yet he didn't utilise such good business opportunity. Paystack:Again, I'm in agreement. He's probably comfortable with the profit he's making already and doesn't see any need to scale. The same thing can be said about IBM and Oracle – tech giants in the past but they have now become a shadow of themselves. Businesses stagnate when they refuse to innovate. That's why Apple devote billions of dollars every year to research and innovation. Edit — I do not have insider knowledge of the dynamics at play that may have stunted NL's growth. I am only speaking from an economic perspective with zero information about the company's finances and predisposition to VC money. As such, it would be unfair for me to criticize harshly; I can only speak to what may have been or could possibly be. |
