Please go back and read your history again, all the coup plotters were in jail during ironsi months in power

They were in house arrest. Na jail them dey put coup plotters? Coup plotter are executed for national unity but because most of them were his brothers , he decided not to execute them. Well he paid dearly with his life and the lives of over 3 million of his people.

Till today, that war has damaged his people mentally.

Is Brigadier-General Aguiyi-Ironsi Nigeria's Greatest Enemy?

This man was handed power in 1966 after his kinsmen executed a bloody coup, killing the Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, and the top leaders from every region except theirs.

He refused to arrest the coup plotters for around 7 months despite nationwide appeals, and in the period, he DESTROYED Nigeria's CONFEDERATION of semi-autonomous regions, creating a FEDERAL system instead, with all powers vested in the centre, in Lagos (now Abuja), including power to harness natural resources. Everything now had to be approved by the 'federal government' - Ironsi's creation.

1) His refusal to arrest and try the coup plotters led to the massacre of Igbos in the north by outraged northerners, and the civil war that ensued.

2) His destruction of the confederation and creation of a federation led to the problems we have today, from corruption to inefficiency to nepotism to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and economic difficulties.

Leading one to ask the question:

Is Aguiyi-Ironsi Nigeria's greatest enemy?

The problem is that everything you wrote above are lies written by someone who either does not know Nigerian history, or is trying to be decietful

Ironsi arrested all the coup plotters within days of putting down the coup. He even convened a tribunal headed Lt Colonel Nwawo to try them. However, the fact that the coup was initially popular, the unsettled times, as well as politics all meant that the tribunal never managed to do its job until Ironsi was killed 6 months later

Nigeria was not practising confederation at the time, Ironsi did not abolish the 4 Regions that existed and he never tampered with resource control. It was Gowon who came after Ironsi and used Decree 14 to abolish all 4 Regions and created 12 new states to replacethem, then followed it up with decree 15 which abolished resource control and placed all resources in the hands of the federal government

So do your research well before opening threads like this to talk about history you dont know

If Ironsi had allowed the coup plotters have their way Nigeria would have been far better than it is today. Nzeogwu and his men planned on something great for the country, an ideology well mapped out that Ironsi didn't know of.. Ironsi was a tribalist, he messed up everything and made it look like it was an igbo coup, and all the rulers after Ironsi till date are all ignorant and daft in government.. They all took advantage of the situations without a blueprint of Nzeogwu's ideology.

One person amongst the coup plotters I didn't like was Ifeajuna, he tipped Ironsi who was one of the marked men on what was going to happen and he had to hide in a boat that night and planned on moves to hijack the coup, Ifeajuna knowing what was going to happen abandoned his miscalculated mission and fled to Ghana, which was why Adewale Ademoyaga had a fist fight with him in prison after his return back to Nigeria as his friend the then Ghanaian president Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown.

To me, Ironsi as a tribalist only made use of the opportunity and option he was given just as the rest of the military rulers after him. Ifeajuna was the real enemy. He failed Nzeogwu and tarnished everything that his fellow plotters had in place for a better Nigeria.

Most of you on NL laying out sentiments and bashing hot on each other unnecessarily based on your regional differences fueled with hatred are completely out of touch with historical facts.

I recommend the book "Why we struck" by Adewale Ademoyaga (one of the coup plotters of the first republic)

Aguiyi Ironsi did not abolish regional government.

Under Ironsi, we still had regional governments who were governed by Regional Military Governors.

Col. Fajuyi was Southwest Region's Military Governor.

Col. Ojukwu was Eastern Nigeria (Southeast and today's Southsouth) Region's Military Governor.

It was Gowon that came on board and abolished regional governments and created the first 12 states in Nigeria and started appointing State Military Governors.

The coup failed, the civilian Deputy prime Minister was not killed why did he have to seize power? Why didn't he simply hand over to the Deputy prime Minister and then back him up with the military?
Why did he choose not to prosecute the people who just wiped out the civilian leadership based on unproven allegations?
His actions led to his own death and the civil war.

Do you know who aguyi ironsi was ?

He's actually the first full general of the Nigerian army he's the highest ranking officer then it was something that was inevitable for him then

Power had to be given to him

Tho he haven't been in the country he was busy fighting along with British soldiers in the Congo war

He never had idea of how much problem the country is. Till tomorrow Igbos celebrate nzeogwu and others than. Aguyi he didn't listen to his own people we told him to excecute the coup plotters he wanted everything to be done following due process and martial law. Alexander madiebo in his book stated aguyi as a typical head strong man who is extremely patriotic and paid no attention to his own people's advise . Even Adewale Ademoyega in his book reinstated that too.

There was a coup actually which the riots of the west is one of the reasons that's story for another day .

Have you ever seen a coup tribunal completed in 4 months?

Were the plotters roaming round free? Weren't they in jail?!

Aguyi did what he was supposed to do as a patriot

1. Unify the country

2. Meet the aggrieved ones and try make peace with them thus the reason for his tours
Thanks to western ibadan news papers then with thier propaganda it was referred to as being in support of the failed coup
His final move was to execute all the coup plotters after the military trial is completed .

Where have you seen a coup tribunal completed in 4 months? sad

I can't wrap my mind around why you lots hate Igbos

He was an opportunist who paid dearly for his greed. A similar situation came up during the Dimka coup when Murtala and some military leaders were killed.
The man who foiled the coup was Babangida, he was not tempted to go to the nearby Radio Nigeria and announce himself as the new head of state.
He called Obasanjo who was Murtala's second in command to take over.
Ironsi usurped power from the civilians and subsequently ruined Nigeria within a spate of six months. No wonder his name is never mentioned in anything.

I know places like Ogun, Oyo and others in South West would have developed more than the way it is now had it been the Igbos didn't destroy our working system of governance back then to usher in unitary system of government.. They do things without thinking of the after effect.

Ikeja, Apapa and other industrial areas in Lagos State up till Ibadan in Oyo were developed by Western region governmemt to taste.. Awolowo and many other Yorubas at the time had so many developmental plans for our region and people but likes of Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ironsi only wanted to steal resources from Yorubaland.. reason Zik was busy fighting Awolowo over Premiership in Western region (Yorubaland) while an Igbo like him was Premier in the Eastern region.
Ironsi got there too and scattered the whole thing, ended regional government for unitary government, thinking only Igbos will be the ones ruling at the centre.. Na Igbo sense be that for you.
God will bless Gowon for ending Igbo ethnic domination agenda by removing South South from the Eastern region. The Igbos colluded with North to remove Mid West (old Bendel) from Western region to reduce Yorubas influence in politcs but fought and are still fighting till date against independence of the Ijaws, Ikwerres and other ethnic groups in Niger Delta from South East. No be hypocrisy be that?.

Many south easterners see ironsi as a villain. He foiled Nzeogwu’s coup after the coup had succeeded 95% remaining Lagos. Kaduna and Enugu was already captured by the charismatic and revolutionary young leader from south south major Chulwuma kaduna Nzeogwu before Aguiyi-Ironsi thwarted their efforts and arrested the battalion that came to capture Lagos. Aguiyi-Ironsi was dumb in the head Like Tinubu and didn’t know what to do with power even after several advise from his kinsmen like general madiebo he never heeded to any until he was killed in 1966 July. If he had not constituted obstacle nzeogwu and co would have made Nigeria the best country in Africa because they had good plans for the coup and more like in the mound of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Blaise campore and other like minded revolutionaries then but Ironsi killed that dream and became clueless on what to do with power...like Tinubu like Aguiyi-Ironsi..dumbos without plans
nice write up.but when u mentioned Blaise compaore it seems u don't know what u are saying .I bet u wanted to say thomas Sankara...

Uncouth and abusive as ever. Putting their arguments forward without having a breakdown is like Obi trying to win the presidency....Impossible task.
Your hero ruined a working arrangement, a product of several negotiations by a thoughtless, whimsical and arbitrary decree.

Obi win or lose is a success the fact the he was able to amass such followership within a year and not only that won Lagos , Abuja and other northern states really showed that your propaganda is losing relevance
It's a wonderful start and every sincere mind knows that! And I am sending my regards to all right thinking Yorubas that supported what right wink

The fact that you people have been ruling 50 years plunging Nigeria into more doom has vindicated igbo

Pack of lies.

Of course Ironsi sent Nzeogwu to Aba prison where he was freed by Ojukwu.

And of course Ironsi destroyed the autonomy of the regions and centralised power in a unitary state via Decree 34.

This is confirmed in this article by the US Council on Foreign Relations.

https://www.cfr.org/blog/nigerias-unitary-federalism?amp

And NO, the 1966 coup was NOT “popular”, except in the demented heads of tribalist Igbos like your father.

It certainly wasn’t “popular” in the north after your demonic kinsmen slaughtered their leaders, you psychopath.

Ahhh I see. Igbos destroyed your working form of Governance? Beyond Ibadan, capital of the Western Region, was there any meaningful development anywhere else in the West? Or is to be claiming Lagos that was capital of Nigeria since 1914?

You guys were clapping and cheering Gowon on as he used decree 14 to to abolish the 4 Regions Nigeria had and embark on state creation, and decree 15 to end resource control, all this while Awolowo was his 2ic

Funny people everywhere

This is the intellectual laziness we talk about. Despite Ironsi's decree 34 , Gowons decree 14 and 15 all being available online for anyone to read and verify who did what, this one is still relying on third party narratives and blogs to reach his own conclusions
