Considering the economic situation in the country, a roasted maize seller was spotted dividing a maize into half in order to sell to those who can not afford to buy a full maize, which sells for between 150 and 200 naira depending on the size.

Things are really tough for many.
even under a government with affinity for agbado nature must be fighting back lol

Tinubu thinks otherwise. He believes in printing money and redenomination of currency. Witchcraft economics!

Ehn ehn.....Now you're talking about the root of your issue....So it was not that Buhari was that bad or that Tinubu don finish Nigeria but your main beef is that your brother was ousted from power about a decade ago? No wonder you no fit stop crying once Obi lost......Take heart, 2031 is still very far grin grin grin

Even the Agbado corn promised them as food by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, they can't afford full corn stick anymore. Yet they abuse the Obidients who see farther than they can see.

Even you and Tinubu depend on cheap cash from crude oil for sustenance, not on agriculture or industry. Minister of Petroleum: Tinubu is copying Buhari as President/Minister of Petroleum. Shameless APC. OLD MEN STRUGGLE FOR POWER SOLELY TO CONTROL CHEAP CASH FROM CRUDE OIL.

Why is food expensive in Nigeria?

We have good farm lands for farming and rain at the right season.

Can somebody tell me why farming is not prioritized in Nigeria?

Good questions. Two important factors that matter for not only agriculture but most businesses in general -

1) Land ownership. Large scale mechanized farming of crops or animals may require substantial and fixed structural investments. Most skilled or well capitalized investors are NOT willing to put in the money because the government owns all land in Nigeria and can LEGALLY seize the farm at any time, or at least attempt to seize it. In short, right to land in Nigeria is tenuous and risky.

2) The official economic policy of Nigeria is to keep the naira strong. The government thus maintains a rigged Forex market to achieve this objective. This policy is very popular among the Nigerian people but harms the economy is several ways...just two examples will suffice

a) A strong currency makes imported goods cheaper and thus suppresses domestic productivity. This is why Nigerian farmers face ruinous foreign competition in markets where they should logically be dominant.

b) High interest rates is one of the classical ways of keeping a currency strong. This is the reason interest rates have ALWAYS been high in Nigeria, and a key impediment to investment.

Macroeconomic policies are important in setting basic incentives for economic activity. At a minimum, Nigeria must cancel the Land Use Act and float the naira if it is serious about evolving a productive and prosperous economy in the long term.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

cheaper to import. Cost of loans in other countries is not 20%, good road and rail networks in other countries, fulani and bandits no dey. Lack of mechanised farming
