Now everyone sees how stupid the anti-west arguments sounds.
Build refinery for me before I sell to you…. Plus pay for the crude oil……..
This crowns it for me grin

It takes about 5-7years from conception to build a refinery. Just dumb.

Such arguments aren.t made by economists like Soludo or Okonjo Iweala but by the common man on he street who believes that refining crude locally would make it so cheap that there would be no need for a subsidy.

So delusional.

Keep typing trash all about. If you like start speaking Yoruba from tomorrow till next year, you're not a Yoruba person and will never be one in this life time.

If you're too dull to realize that there are diverse cultures around the world and it's unnatural for the whole world to have a single culture, then you're not worth my time.

I'm here to discuss important topics, not dumb ones.

That bolded statement exposes the shallowness of your mind.

Today when the world is a global village and acculturation is the order of the day, you keep dreaming of reinforcing a notion of monoculturism. We are supposed to adapt and blend in with each other. Do away with archaic practices and embrace modernity but you keep emphasizing the need for us to GO BACK. One wonders what you even mean by that. What are the practical steps to achieve what you mean? Especially in the modern era.

My friend you're too obsessed with irrelevances. The modern world is a global village. We are now soo interconnected. Everyone is adapting to different things. Today the world is listening to our music. THE NIGERIAN AFROBEAT. Mind you it didn't say Igbo Afrobeat or yoruba Afrobeat or Hausa Afrobeat. THE NIGERIAN AFROBEAT. Our identity to the outside world today is nigerian. Do you think that is a terrible idea. To them Pidgin language is our unique shared identity. Our jollof rice, not indigenous to any particular tribe is our most popular food outside our shores.

That is what you call acculturation. Please stop wasting time talking nonsense and vituperating nonsensically, you've basically become a nuisance on the thread with this iridescent talking point. It's tiring.

This is a very foolish talking point.
It's foolish because it doesn't address the number one main issue which is TRUST! Trust and accountability. Which nigerian in his right mind would think of sacrificing for anything for his country when that sacrifice goes straight to the bin and the leaders show that they do not care about their subjects??

Look at the ministerial appointments, does it fill one with any bit of optimism when we can see that positions were used to settle scores and reward the same people who have a rich history of public theft and corruption??

This guy is chatting bullocks. He must address the root cause of lack of trust which is corruption and embezzlement from the ruling class before he makes any demand from nigerians who are already suffering enough as it is.

Nah, Portable is in a league of his own. He's ghetto and razz in a way you can't find in Burna, Wiz or Davido. He's not refined, rash and has been in the news for a lot of wrong reasons. If it's not claiming to be a member of a deadly cult group in Ikorodu,(One chance boys I think), he's harrasing police officers.

I don't necessarily agree with the lawyers walking away. I certainly would not have done that but I understand why some of them would have felt a certain kind of way.

Personally I think portable has mental illness but most people think it’s him being razz and ghetto . The fact that he amuses people and make them laugh is probably why he will continue to get shows.

If I was in the lawyers’ shoes, I will just sit down relax and enjoy the show .

I disagree with that sentence very strongly.

The statement, "the west owes you nothing" can't be right. That erodes ones sense of justice. The west committed soo many atrocities and exploited our people for soooo long. They killed, kidnapped, maimed our fathers up until just few decades ago. To cause and inflict that much suffering and then leave like that (for those that have left) is simply not right. Which is why you even hear some of their thinkers talk about repatriation after factoring in what our resources, human and material added and made them who they are today. The west would not be what it is today without the African continent so yeah, it's very appalling for an African to boldly declare that the "west owes us nothing". That's a very strong and wrong sentiment and statement.

This is quite generous and more importantly hypocritical coming from you.

You have continuously advocated for the imposition of English Language, a Western Language over African traditional languages. According to you African cultures have no value.

You are the same person who is indifferent about being Igbo or being associated with your African tribe because “it adds no value to you”.

And I am supposed to take you serious? Not in this debate fam!

This is strawmanship at its finest.

What does my position on the continuing negative legacy of colonialism especially ECONOMICALLY on NIGERIA and AFRICA as a whole has to do with my position on acculturation and evolution of cultural aspects of life?

We're discussing primarily about the economic impacts of colonialism and you're diverting to an unrelated irrelevance. Nice try.

Acknowledge that you were wrong with your sentiment expressed that the "west owes us nothing". That's historically wrong.. they do owe us a lot if not it's blatant injustice. And They know which is why they talk about repatriation.

Repeating a lie a million times doesn't make it true.

You are bordering on being a pathological liar because no matter how many times I elucidate on my position, you still land on that sentence. Meaning you choose to lie for fun.

Again, I would correct this notion, I said ASPECTS of African culture were and some are still are barbaric. I elaborated on that and gave examples like female genital mutilation, Infant scarring, ignorant beliefs of infant witchcraft, extreme misogyny like shaving widows hair when husband died, drinking dirty bath water of husband's corpse, zero rights of inheritance for women and so on and so on, going further back, killing of babies, live human sacrifices etcetera etcetera.

I made my points very lucid and elaborated on why we must shed these ASPECTS of our culture which were indeed barbaric and inhumane and adopt modern standards. You yourself even agreed with my point that yes, culture must evolve.

But of course I'm sure you will still repeat it a hundred more times that "donjazet calls African cultures barbaric and savage in your quest to keep misrepresenting my opinion.
You're a big dumb lying fool who knows not how to express his opinions concisely and politely. Learn!

It has everything to do with it. Let’s be clear, everything I put there are your words, not mines.

You absolutely can not hold your position about the negative economic impact of colonialism on Africa without involving African cultures, it is impossible.

Afterall, the idea of colonialism is deeply rooted on racism, the idea that Africans are inferior in every aspect when compared to the caucasians in this instance since they propagated colonialism.

Africans under colonialism were seen as animals with no intelligence or knowledge so yes, you are hypocritical and will not be taken serious.

Moving onto red herrings I see. cheesy
Trying to divert the conversation to something else with distractions.

And no, colonialism wasn't necessarily rooted in racism because Africa was not the only continent|country colonised by the west.

Lots of Asian countries and even middle eastern countries were colonised. India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam etc. I mean America was infact one of the earliest colonies of our own colonisers. Soo no, colonialism wasn't really about racism at least not completely.

COLONIALISM WAS ABOUT ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION OF A PEOPLE.

And the whole debate you guys are having today is centered on the economic and political legacy of colonial powers in Africa. To which I say to you, it is wrong for you an African to make such a statement that the west, our colonizers "owe us nothing". NO THEY DO OWE US SOMETHING!. Our resources both human and mineral were exploited for centuries and the effects are still felt till today. That's not nothing.

They wouldn't be where they are without us.
An African making that sentence isn't right, just withdraw that one sentence, that's all. You're actually partially correct in your other submissions especially by emphasizing that we must now pick ourselves up by ourselves and fire up ahead.

No, there are certainly some improvements that could be made to nairaland.

People have suggested countlessly to Seun that nairaland could host its own videos.
No reason why a popular site like this would not be able to host live videos.

We should be able to directly upload videos and not rely on YouTube and Twitter.
Also, no reason why Twitter videos can't play directly here.

Every twitter post, one is directed to the app or the website, why can't we view twitter posts direct here?

These were some of the improvements that we're suggested to Seun that would have made usage much better but he's just stick with this old UI.

Why will anyone do this? Will you do this for anyone in your private capacity?

You want to sell your yam to me, you collected money and now say I must cook it in your pot
You want to sell car to me, you collected money and insisted I must only drive it in your area
You sold me a shirt and after collecting money you insisted that I must only wear it on Thursdays

If you want all these maybe you should not collect money

But mba you collected full price for your crude, gold and you are insisting on how the buyer that paid you have to use what you sold

If he likes he can use the crude to bath or mix akamu, Its no longer your business once you take your money for it

The crude they are buying from non African countries, are they refining it in Saudi, Qatar and UAE? Its this entitlement mentality. Why should anyone do anything for you? The Chinese mining your gold, How much are they paying for it? Are you giving them all these requirements as well?
This is what good African leadership should provide. But those we have as leaders are stooges to the West who empower them to do their biddings at the detriment of our people.

Why is Ajaokuta Steel not active? Why are our 5 refineries not active? You may need to know what IMF and WB think about these industries. I discovered that Nigerian government accept grants (which they steal any way) to make sure these industries don't work. To keep us in perpetual dependence on Europe and America.

Listen to yourself sounding like an entitled brat. They should give you, they should give you!!!!!The West owes you absolutely nothing! Are you gifting the West your crude oil and uranium for free? What have you used the revenue collected from these sales to the West to do?

Where are the working refineries in Nigeria? Whose fault is it that our refineries are not functioning? The West I bet? Away from crude oil, can we talk about the elephant project called Ajaokuta Steel that has been used to embezzle billions in the name of revival?

How has Africa benefitted parasitically from the brain drain through immigration?
The billions of dollars remitted by Nigerians from the West that is now sustaining the Nigerian economy is what? What has Nigeria done to prevent the brain drain? Are tertiary institutions still embarking on strike? Are medical doctors embarking on strike? are primary healthcare hospitals functioning? Should we blame the West also for these? So you expect young minds to remain in a country with no future because they believe in Nigeria and hate the West?

I asked you, why are African borders closed to fellow African countries? Why are African travel visas closed to other African countries?

I have travelled easily to other African countries for vacation using my US Passport in comparison to using my Nigerian passport (something, I will never dare again) as an African. Should I blame the West for that also?

Address the elephant in the room instead of this merry go round about the West.

I have just dealt with the issue of Ajaokuta Steel and our refineries on my response above. You are dragging me into areas where I have no argument with leaving out the actual point I am making.

Here's a BBC report that informs my stand.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-66406137

Look, my blame to the West is that they empower bad leadership in Africa. If you don't accept this then no point arguing further.

During colonial times the West was definitely the primary driver of African underdevelopment, and it can be argued that the haphazard balkanization and union of disparate ethnic groups set the stage for the perpetuation of many of the problems faced today. The problem is that until time travel becomes a reality most of the damage done by the West can't be corrected. Most of the problems faced by Africa TODAY are caused by Africans, in particular African leaders, and trying to pin the problems we face mainly on the West shows extreme lack of accountability.

no one is a stooge to the west

this is simply about short sighted greed of africans in general. talk about leaders all you want, they are drawn from us

there is no guarantee that anyone who ascends to leadership will not do the same or worse

the greed we all see and witness everyday

if i am not mistaken, chrome oil, emeka offors company was previously awarded the contract for TAM for the refineries
a company with no history of buiilding or operating a refinery.

what does the west have to do with that?

you did not discover anything. all of these issues come back to good old fashioned out of control corruption

the diesel sold in nigeria is rejected everywhere else in the world. it is the lowest quality diesel out there. who are the people bringing it in? nigerians in NNPC chose to import it. Nigerians in NNPC brought in the tainted fuel that restarted petrol queues.

when you go on about the west, you remind me of the housemaid, the security guard, the poor relative who believes he is somehow entitled to extensive financial support from you. meanwhile the person is indiscipline and keeps making poor Finacial decisions , at some point in typical naija fashion he may even start saying you are using him or using his destiny .

when MTN came to nigeria, they sold sims at n25,000. in 2001. who signed off on this? Nigerians .

we have short sighted nigerians who are more focused on kickbacks that will harm us all in the long run.

it is not about the leaders.
