It's after the Israelites have insisted on having a human king that God told Samuel to give in to their demands but to fully grasp what i'm saying you can read the Bible book of 1Samuel 8:10-18 God foretold how a human ruler will maltreat them and that's what really happened to the Israelites!

God chose judges for His people as executives to enforce the law He gave them but as for Kings? NO! God Himself is their King! 1Samuel 8:7
When the Israelites chose their own rulers they are indirectly condemning God's rulership over them.

Taking the LEAD in obeying God's laws? YES!
Making RULES? NO!
Human Kings in the world do not LEAD by examples rather they set up RULES to oppress their fellowman {Ecclesiastes 4:1; 8:9} that is what God warned the Israelites against {1Samuel 8:10-18} Satan is the initiator of human government the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden will make the first human pair feel liberated from submitting to God's standards, then instead of obeisance to God they will be the one to be obeyed as they set RULES regarding right and wrong! Genesis 3:5
That's why God promised a child will be born to undo that curse brought upon the entire human race {Genesis 3:15 compare to Isaiah 9:6-7} so when Jesus began his earthly ministry Satan quickly raised enemies against him right in the midst of his own people: the Jews {John 7:40-41} who are those scheming to have Jesus killed? {John 11:53} it's the Jewish politicians {John 11:48} that's why Jesus called them the seeds of Satan the serpent! John 8:44
So the tree in the middle of the garden in Eden connotes politics that's why no one follows that path without getting involved in killing of his or her neighbour because Satan will demand they show their allegiance by doing something really detestable to God {Luke 4:5-7} whoever feels like obeying his God's given conscience will never be given a ticket under Satan's system! John 14:30; 2Corinthians 4:4; 1John 5:19
