Banjo stalled

They defeated Fed Army in the first battles but he didn't press forward because he has been in communication with some Yoruba leaders who spoke sense into his head not to turn our land into a killing field

He also let David Ejoor escape

The fed Army had enough chance and time to regroup....

Biafran elements among the Liberation Army reported to Ojukwu all that happened, they were ordered to arrest him and bring him to Biafra for treason

On his return to Benin...
He was arrested before he could pull the pistol under his pillow....

Victor banjo betrayed the liberation of Oduduwa

The Liberation Army was led by Banjo tho and it's more like they retreated
You retreat or surrender when you can't advance further. Else all your infantry will turn to canon fodders. Banjo probably saved thousands of ibo lives by that action.

Where they asking to be liberated?

There was widespread hostility between Urhobo, Isoko, Ijaw, and Itsekiri people against the occupying Ibo soldiers on their lands..Even the Benin that was captured only lasted for 24 hours, you now think you can liberate/capture a bigger Yoruba tribe that never asked for your help.

Whoever gave Ojukwu the option to go offensive on the Midwest and Western region instead of defending his carved out Biafra was not nice. grin

It seems you are a toddler? Your mind didn't tell you that Lagos was the seat of power of Nigeria at that time
It's war, so because Lagos being in western region was not left out in the civil war?
I don't know what you guys aim to achieve with all these low IQ threads being opened to troll the Igbos?
I believe the present political leaders we have today were once like you guys. Keep promoting hatred and expect love.

Excuse me, straying into your neighbors compound is not a fight for independence, but external agression.
This is pure expansionism, Ojukwu only needs to do away with the Niger Bridge and secure his Biafa.

OP, that is one question I've always ask. He had already achieve his intentions of alienating SE region and forming Biafra.
Why is he attempting to capture Gowon in Lagos, when he knew he would trespass on other people's region? I think his action after passing and conquering Midwest reveal his real intention of conquest.

Observe those people very well, they are always about subjugatng others.
This was why they keep making political mistakes, even among themselves.

During the Biafran war the Biafran army took control of the Mid western region and declared it the republic of Benin and that was when the present day republic of Benin was called Dahomey. The local Ijaws, irhobos and ikweres denied wanting to be part of Biafra and poisoned the Biafran soldiers any chance they got. It got so bad that the Igbo soldiers had to prepare their meals themselves or to only eat food prepared from their fellow Igbos. The also formed rebel groups against the Biafran soldiers to show they didn't want to be part. The Biafran soldiers were planning to go west and capture Lagos until they were intercepted and stopped at Ore ondo state led by Colonel Oyinlade Iluyomade. My question is why were these people planning to over run Yoruba land?. These people didn't mean well for us. They said they wanted their own country but started attacking other regions instead. How is planning to attack Yoruba land relevant to Biafra. This also affirms the question of whether Igbos are terrorists.

They always go for things that don't belong to them. 😂

For three days, Nigeria had no government. Then on August 1, 1966, Lt. Colonel Yakubu Jack Gowon, a lanky bachelor of 32, was announced as the new Head of State. Banjo was happy with the development. Gowon was his friend and old mate. He believed he would soon be out of prison. He was wrong. He petitioned Gowon for his freedom, but Gowon ignored him also. Instead, he was moved from Kirikiri Prison to a prison in Eastern Nigeria. When Ojukwu declared Eastern Nigeria as the independent Republic of Biafra, he ordered the release of Banjo and made him the General Officer Commanding a Biafran army division.

At the beginning of hostilities, the West and the Mid-West had tried to maintain some neutrality, not allowing troops to be deployed from their territory against Biafra. However, Ojukwu ordered a blitzkrieg against the Mid-West and within 24 hours almost the entire region was occupied. The invasion was led by Colonel Banjo.

The mission of Banjo however was beyond Mid-West. He was to lead the Biafran invasion of the West and Lagos and proclaim the independence of Western Nigeria from the Federation. The success of that invasion was to cause serious rift between Ojukwu and his old friend Banjo. Banjo objected seriously to the appointment of an Igbo man, Lt. Colonel Albert Okonkwo, as the Military Governor of the new Republic of Benin. Banjo felt a soldier of Mid-West origin should have been appointed. Ojukwu disagreed.

In his letter to Banjo, dated August 22, 1967, Ojukwu had made it clear that he intended to hold on to all the aces. Three points in the letter were especially disagreeable to Banjo:
1.You will have nothing to do with the Military Administrator of the Mid-West territory during your sojourn there prior to your move to the West.
2.During the period of Biafran’s troops presence in your territory, all political measures, statements or decrees, shall be subject to the approval, in writing by myself or on my authority.
3. Should our troops arrive and liberate Lagos, the government of the Republic of Biafra reserves the right to appoint a military administrator for the territory.

Ojukwu promised that Banjo would be proclaimed the military governor of the new Republic of Western Nigeria. Banjo believed that such a governor should be a partner and not a subordinate to the Head of State of Biafra. Ojukwu disagreed. Of course, Banjo would not concur that Ojukwu should appoint a military administrator for Lagos. He regarded Lagos as part of the West.

The disagreement between the two men was protracted and ultimately costly. Ojukwu insisted on having his way and in the end Colonel Okonkwo was made the Head of State of the new Republic of Benin. The delay in Benin allowed Gowon to rally Federal troops and Colonel Murtala Muhammed led the Second Division to confront Biafran forces at Ore, Ondo State. They were joined by troops from the Ibadan Garrison Command (IGC), led by Colonel Olusegun Obasanjo. The Biafrans were routed and the new Republic of Benin was quickly buried.

The answer might be very interesting for you.

Two theories

1.To take pressure off the Northern front ...as the Nigerian Army was threatening Enugu at around the same time....and the Biafran army needed to take pressure off its Northern front...so they invaded the Midwest (which was neutral) and then the West (also neutral)...

Think that is a strange war motive? Germany in WW2 invaded neutral Netherlands, and Belgium to make their eventual attack on France and the UK easier. Neutrality be dammed.

2. Consider that the leader of the Biafran vanguard was Banjo...and consider that on arrival in Benin, they freed those of the five majors jailed there, who then joined the effort. Consider Nzeogewu was part of the Northern biafran defence....

Which leads to the theory that the Five Majors were planning to invade Lagos, dethrone Gowon, and then at the same time dethrone Ojukwu in the East and then complete the aims of January 15 1966 of a united, socialist, Nigeria.

Unfortunately it did not work out.

Well, it was aimed at taking pressure off the Northern front.

At the begining of the war, the Nigerian army was focusing on Biafra's Northern borders. Midwest and West were out of the war.

By invading both regions, the Biafran army was gambling on taking pressure off the Northern front, as the invasion would have forced the Nigerian Army to deploy some troops away from the Northern front (in 1967, the Nigerian army had been decimated by the previous year's crisis)...to the West.

But as you know, man proposes...

Nobody let David Ejoor escape. He fought his way out of the assassination attempt. David Ejoor was one of the few generals with a very rare gift. He also craftly escaped death during the coup.

The order from the east was precise and straight. Bring Ejoor to me dead or alive. Banjo wasn't aware when the troops went to the government house to seek the head of Ejoor. He gallantly withheld his position for hours and when he withstand the fire power, he retreated.

I believe so too. He wanted to divert the attention to the western front but lots of blunders were made doing this. He could have easily won the support of the minorities. Installing a puppet in the then Midwest was totally unnecessary and it only gave the minorities reason to distrust your intentions, hence they fought back. I mean, this tiny region just left the grip of the West and you are already imposing a puppet.

The North capitalized on these blunders and made the advancement of the eastern force in the western front a hell of a ride. Before the Ore defeat, Biafran soldiers were already starting to miss in Bini, Ughelli and Warri.

It was not captured, to capture a place you have to hold it and control it, it was just an advance, a surprise attack, because the two tribes had no conflicts, but they said he was heading for Lagos, hence he must pass through Benin, ore, Ondo etc...maybe they were passing through to the sit if power...

The Midwestern region ambushed them when they were escaping from Yoruba land, tens of thousands were killed, Igbo immigrants residing in Asaba that are secretly working with Biafra later pay a very heavy price.
