Do you know an astonishing fact? kiss there are more Chinese, Romanian, Albanian and Indian immigrants in Europe than Nigerians...

For context, there are like a million+ Romanians in Italy —that's more than the population of some small countries..

So what's all this yapping? Plan accordingly, trust God — with a sane society and a little focus — you'll break even.

I think the OP is biased in his write up in the sense that it is one-sided and made to instill fear in japaa adventure.

In as much as you dont smuggle your way abroad illegally, you are assured of the following:
1)Human Dignity. (no soldier or politician is gonna treat you like an animal because of your status or background. We see this everyday here0
2) There is something for you to do, wether it is a professionally skilled job or labour. You are assured of your basic life if u aint lazy.
In Nigeria some graduates have been unemployed for 5 to 7 yrs (can you beat that?)
3) You dont need to know anybody to get anything legal that is your right. (Here ministry jobs, NDA, Govt contract , all are connections)
4) Flat structure. Whether you are a gateman, CEO, Banker or carpenter, everybody level is flat. A cleaner can afford a new car with credits and repay after 5 years. Who dash monkey banana for 9ja.
5) Access to good infrastructure like health, education, good roads, security, power, societal decorum, rule of law etc

However, what the op should have warned people about are the followings.
1. Abroad life is not cheap. The rent I am paying for my wife as a student per month is almost a year and half rent in our Nigeria house.
2. Abroad life you earn and give to the system via tax, you try to evade tax you go to jail
3. Abroad life does not support your adulterous lifestyle like you do in Nigeria
4. Abroad life does not give you absolute control over your kids
5. Abroad life does not give you preference as a man over your wife as we do traditionally in Nigeria, infact women and children are protected than men .
6. You dont have so much social life in abroad life cos every moment counts (your bill is running so no time for idling like 9ja)
7. You cannot easily get help from family and friends like Nigeria so all man for himself.

For me, after spending almost 10m in the relocation of my wife, I dont have regrets cos like three employers have mailed me to let them know when I land about jobs thing and I can see they pay more than 10x what I earn in Nigeria.

MimiSheWrote:
Hello Everyone, first of all I apologize in advance for the long note and also about my English, not actually my first language. cry

My name is Mimi, I was born in Nigeria... But cos of the nature of my dad's profession i have spent around 75% of my life in different countries outside Nigeria... Mostly in EU.

Well enough said about myself, cos this topic is not about me but about Nigerians... Our general mentality and perception of abroad.

Guys listen up... All that glitters is not really gold. Out there is not entirely what people think it is. And you might think just because I have spent so much time outside Nigeria i do not understand the struggle in Nigeria and therefore not qualified to tell you all this "nonsense"..... I completely get it.. trust me.

But even a random 3 years old kid knows that the country is messed up and nothing to write home about, we all know about the Suffering, depression and "starvation level of poverty" in Nigeria yeah.... That's why everyone is desperatly looking for a way out, no doubt... but trust me, JAPA is not 'always' your ticket out of poverty... Well 'sometimes' it is... but most times it's just your direct ticket to being subjected to racism, more depression, more struggles, several mental disorder, homelessness, modern day slavery and the list goes on and on.

Trust me... when it comes to hustling field, success is much more louder than failure. cos our mind was designed to constantly search for hope. which means you would quickly hear about the lucky 3% that made it big through JAPA, but hardly hear about the remaining unlucky 97% that found themselves in worse possible condition after the same JAPA. There's no money tree out here... there's no diamond river out here...
Is there more opportunities? Well yes, But there are millions of people that already done and still doing whatever you intend to come do over here and yet they are still in the worse condition than you are in right now.

You would literally cry when you see what most of our African brothers and sisters go through around the world in the name of Japa. And as a Nigerian?? Trust me it gets worse.. and your chances gets even much smaller. Cos no one trust Nigerians anymore any where around the world and I believe we all know why.

Sorry but I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble, kill anyone's vibe or being a negative biitch! Naaaah I'm only trying to be realistic! I'm only trying to tell you something no travel agent would ever tell you and something people abroad hardly tell you, and even when they eventually do tell you...? You don't believe them.. instead you result to asking them questions like "why are they still there if it's that bad"? .....

Well.... You wanna know why most of them are still there? Let me tell you why... there is a psychological reason for that... First They are still in DENIAL. Imagine dreaming your entire life to travel abroad and finally have a good life, you probably invested almost everything or everything you have got to make it happen (your money, your time, your last hope)
But then you finally got there and then meet a reality that is entirely different from your life long dreams and perception of these faraway green lands?
I don't know if you know... but our brain is defensive in nature, it will automatically switch straight to denial mode... Leaving you with atleast enough 'hope and wait for a magic or should i say a miracle' (afterall this is abroad where magic happens?)
This is just one of the reasons why most of these people continue sticking around instead of returning home.

Another reason is that they are worried about what people back home would say or think... Because the people back home also got this general fvcked up mentality and very high expectation of people coming back from Japa (y'all need to stop it! Y'all need to get rid of that mentality, seriously embarassed) cos like I said earlier... there is no bleeping money tree over there! I don't know where Nigerians got that idea from in the first place...
It needs to stop, yall driving the youth nuts with such mentality, it's doing more harm than good. That high expectation/ pressure back home is mostly the reason our people are more likely to result to crime out here (so just stop it! cry )

I have met alot of other African nationalities abroad... and amazingly they don't share the same mentality we have about Abroad. They treat abroad as just another hustling ground and not a direct ticket to success... Therefore they are more relaxed and less pressured than Nigerians out here.

Moving Abroad is not such a bad idea though, it worked and still works for few lucky ones (including my Family) it would be wrong and biased of me if I fail to mention that..
There are plenty of and more opportunities over out here not doubt...
But what I'm just saying is that... it's not always that easily reached.. as most people automatically believe.
Look... Somehow all these countries are intelligently designed In such a way that it take back almost entirely everything you make out here from you one way or the other... Through tax, through mind blowing bills or random expenses around every corner.

And at the end of the day you realize you are nothing but a modern day slave building someone's country for free... And without freedom.

Most people screaming Japa in Nigeria are far in better living condition and more stable mentally ,more happy than majority of people in the so called abroad without even knowing it. Sometimes Instead of gambling and betting your hard earned million of naira on Japa, it's more advisable to chill out... relax and invest that Millions in Nigeria. I'm just saying... You would probably end up living a life most people over there can only envy and dream of.

Say no more attorney. I wish people will seek advice and listen to people life you before they invest all their life earning on Japa runz. I will read more on your post now. Which state do you practice law?

gforce5:
I agree that it is a big risk for people with a career to sacrifice everything in the name of Japa and as an Immigration lawyer, I have advised clients to think clearly before Japaing. However, the middle and upper middle career oriented are leaving the country not because of money but because of the quality of living in the country. No matter how one disguises it, the quality of living in Nigeria is very low. No light, no decent water, no good roads and a non-existent educational sector. The middle class have looked at the aforementioned issues and have concluded that Nigeria is not a suitable environment to raise their children.

As for those who are at an advanced age, they shouldn't try it. Immigration is a young person's hustle. If you read some of my posts on this forum, I have specifically stated the ideal age to leave the country. There's a reason why the pensioners of those advanced countries retire at a cheaper jurisdiction.

you are not being fair and just if you live in abroad and you are giving such an advise. Are you also aware that most african leaders prefer keeping their people in penury while sending their kids abroad or investing there. Look at ondo governor or even buhari. Do you know if buhari was not treated in uk, he would have been a dead man. So i say you guys giving these advise while outside Nigeria are very mean and wicked.
You didn't get the point. The point is that people like you assume relocating abroad is an absolute guarantee to success.

the odds are higher for you. Let me tell you the truth, if the exchange rate was better many would not leave. Also, remember diasporans remit money, so the more people in abroad, the more money is coming to the country.

Documentation is the main problem for many guys abroad -many are illegal so they have no choice but to live a life of survival.

But a friend managed to sneak into NJ and because he is a very good barber has been able to carve out a life for himself. He still does not have any legal documentation but he works. Through that he has been able to build himself a house in the north for his young family. And also help many of his siblings.

I guess this can probably only happen in the states where a single haircut costs about $25,don't get me wrong he stood out in the snow hustling for customers to pay for his rent (barbers have to pay a fee to work in a shop). But as time flew by he carved out a niche for himself -the African community liked him and he became their go to guy whenever they needed a haircut.

So my message is -work on a skill that would allow you work -it does not have to be a professional skill but surely a trade -beauty care, tailoring ,carpentry ,plumbing ,painting -any type of trade.

Another advice is to avoid crime -we have a huge number of Nigerians in federal prisons in the states and that is definitely not a nice place to be.

decide on a trade or solid education, which one would become your life saver would depend on many factors but I believe the former rather than the latter is your best bet -remember locals would be happy for you to do the dirty work rather than the white collar work.

I would avoid any asian or arab country and definitely not india -I wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy. The US is still the best place for an illegal immigrant.

Having lived in US for 10 uninterrupted years, I can tell you OP was not biased and counter your 5 points.

1. Human dignity: true soldiers and politicians do anyhow but there are gangs in US and UK too. I used to live in Chicago and Bariga and I can tell you that you have a higher chances of getting killed in US than Nigeria.
2. You're right about something to do but doing something does not translate into doing some meaningful. Majority of immigrants start working in group home even as a masters degree holder.

3. While you don't need to know anyone to get a job, there are still instances you need to know people to get a job even in US though rear

4. There is nothing like flat structure. Average Americans can't afford to buy a new car. Even us s cars takes years to pay it off.

5. Good infastructure is a plus abroad but don't confused good healthcare to it availability. There are millions of Americans that has no healthcare and are one sickness to bankruptcy.

Note: while US, UK, EU are better than Nigeria, not all abroad are better. Traveling to Belize, Panama etc in search of a greener pasture is literally like hustling backward.

See, you were doing well with the article but then you couldn’t resist that primordial primitive african inferiority complex and narcissistic urge to boast ( oh but my family is doing well ) and it is that little line that turned you into a wicked person because the question then becomes, if your family is doing so well over there why then do you feel the need to write this long article discouraging people if not for wickedness. You would have made the perfect post if you had said and I am writing this article from a homeless shelter in London and I haven’t eaten since yesterday.
