Next FIFA international football window is in October 2023.

Nigeria will play Saudi Arabia in Portugal on the 13th of October

Well, I was only looking at the FIFA calendar which applies to every member federation. But yes you are right AFCON participants can squeeze something out during the winter break/camping phase

Amedino99:
I thought countries are allowed to play a friendly or two before the start of afcon.

Relatively speaking yes. We need a full strength Morocco and Senegal to give us some reality check. Zimbabwe and Lesotho will cover for Southern African opponent warm ups

Kog45:
Sir Joebie, are you saying Lesotho and Zimbabwe are not great test in WC qualifier.
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by Joebie: 6:48am On Sep 13, 2023
Better play no doubt. We can also attribute it to the better pitch cheesy

Meliforme... thanks so much for your short yet beautiful analysis on the game. It was only yours that truly captured how we really played and approached the tie vs Sao Tome. It was indeed a 4-4-2 or let me say in its truest essence, a 4-2-2-2 approach because Lookman and Iheanacho operated more as false wingers and attacking midfielders through the half spaces.

Yes, It is Sao Tome... we were expected to win no doubt. So we should not scream "Eureka" because of the result. Like Joebie said, we beat Sao Tome 10-0 and felt on top until Algeria and co brought us back to reality.

But the difference this time lies in the personnel coming through for us and in how we moved forward in attack.

Ndidi's forward plays, Boniface's easy-on-the-eyes understanding of the withdrawn striker role (#cool. Iheanacho's false winger role from the right half space/right channel... Bruno Onyemaechi's understanding on the overlap and underlay... Lookman's inside forward swagger... Osimhen's dominant box performance and ability to shift outwide to accommodate a fellow CF in the middle and Chukwueze's hybrid role as a half space operator and true wing force.

The midfield still needs a few tweaks and the defence isn't there yet especially centrally but the Fullbacks options has fine depth now.

LB - Zaidu, Bruno, Collins and/or Bassey

RB - Aina, Osayi-Samuel, Ebuehi

JPes gotta just get the CB pair right and finally get the midfield balance that will instantly make the Super Eagles true Afcon Favorites.

Time will tell.

The AFCON is holding at the middle of the season. Clubs may likely not release players till like a week to the AFCON and so there may not be enough time to organize standard friendlies.
apart from the afcon in Egypt, most afcon tourneys we play are within that January period and countries still organize a friendly or two.

Too routine for a team that won just one AFCON which was 1980? lol! The same CIV they almost lost to in the 1994 semis? lol!

AFCON is every two years; and Nigeria, just like many other African teams, place more importance on WCQ than the AFCON. I remember back in 1990 AFCON when Cameroon and Egypt sent their 'B' teams to the AFCON because they were keeping their 'A' Teams for the world cup

Those ones will be more of kick-abouts, not serious friendlies.
That aside, playing friendlies before the AFCON is really nothing. What matters more is for things to work-out for the team when the tournament starts.

AFCON is a kind of tournament where pre-tournament form doesn't count for much. AFCON pedigree has mostly counted more.
As I have always maintained that there are traditional AFCON Teams that will always do well irrespective of the form they came to the tournament with. Pre-AFCON friendlies no dey do anything. More important is to keep your players free from injuries.

This is our best time to reclaim our number one spot as African giants. Senegal, Algeria and the likes are slowly regressing. Even Morocco now only have teamwork to be Proud of as African giants.

All we need is an intelligent coach and a good and balanced midfield setup.

Where was he when George Weah won it in 1995? He was in his prime then, and couldn't even smell a nomination.

By 1995, Yekini had already passed his prime. Besides, there was no major international tournament that year and what counted more was club performance. George Weah, despite his World Player of the Year, never tasted the World Cup.

Amedino99:
I'm not sure it really matters that much. Ghana once laboured to beat Sao tome 1-0 and 3-1 but we know the story when we landed on them. And besides under rohr whose goal limit was 4, we beat them 4-2 and 3-0. Now imagine what a Jpes team will do to them.

Victor Okoh Boniface has catapulted himself above the likes of Moffi, Onuachu and Sadiq in the Hierarchy of Super Eagles Strikers now.

A complete central forward beast also adept at playing through the channels and falling into the "pockets" between the lines to link plays.

A Big Mobile Hitman.

He truly is dangerous. I am beyond excited at how much better he can still become.
