Greta Gerwig just wanted to make a "simple " live action of a popular merchandise and make many people's childhood fantasies come true, the promotion just went out of whack, as many brand didn't want to waste a once in a lifetime "PR goldmine" by not tapping into it, Heck if i was a marketing lead at a big firm, i would probably fear for my job if i didn't"tap into the Barbie hysteria". As I have come to expect of Nolan films, his movies spend at least 3+ to 4 months in cinemas. So Oppenheimer might even actually be on VOD till early December sef especially if the movie continues to overperform like its feminist sibling BARBIE.

WB is releasing Barbie on IMAX screens next week. And many Industry watchers was surprised they didn't shift the VOD release date from Sept 12 upwards regarding how the film continues to perform in the box office.

For Nolan, I'm sure Universal would do all it takes to honour and keep Nolan, unlike WB wey no too send person papa at times and do what they do best — making weird decisions.

Feminism is not a problem- women deserve equal rights. The issue is that feminism has been diluted to support modern hypergamy and capitalist structures which are ironically oppressive to both men and women.

For instance, Barbie is a market product. A representation of the sexual appeal of the average american consumer- a white, able-bodied, slim blonde woman. This is not representative of many women. This is why a scene of different barbies was incorporated into the barbie movie- so that the criticism of "whiteness" and a lack of intersectional feminism would be abated.

Barbie is heavily marketed with pink. Pink- the capitalist colour marketed to little girls and thereby conditioning them to gendered norms. The same gendered norms that feminists wouldn't want forced on women.

I could go on and on. But it seems that people here prefer the nonsense written by shalaye masters from hyping box office numbers to writing anachronistic reviews of movies.

Anyone angry at this has probably never seen a Barbie media in thier life prior, i bet you, if this movie came out , let say 10 years ago, people will have absolutely no qualms with it, but now, movies are being watched with big microscope to see which silly thing they did wrong, and that's why we have many bad movies now in ratio to Good ones, Film makers are simply afraid to express thier "art" properly, they expect them to please, the rainbow gang, racial mafias, misguided feministas, egotistical misogynists and even the disabled (more recently)!, all in a 2hrs movie!. Now tell me how this kind of flick would come out good.

I use to enjoy Family Guy but not anymore because of BS like this, if S1 - S5 came out in this period, these people would have probably convulse and have a stroke. Nobody and Nothing was out of bound in thier butt of jokes and they engaged hot topics in thier gags, 9/11, the Christian "God", Jesus, The Prophet SAW, LGTV folks, i mean nothing was out of bounds. It was now left for the audiences to decipher how to interpret this art.


If one's takeaway from the Barbie movie is that "Men are dumb", then that person has no business seeing movies, and as the movie is PG-13, if your 13 year old child sees it and concluded that, he/she/their Father is dumb?, Then that person is probably failing as a parent.

Awesome take and I'm with you on it critiquing "white feminism" while still capitalizing on it. Very Bitchie did an indepth look on it called "the plastic feminism of barbie",I think it will make us all question if Barbie is/was really feminist at all or was it just lip service as the brand became a capitalist staple.

One thing that's not talked about despite the heavy discourse on the movie is the glorious celebration of feminity. In a patriachal world, hyper-feminity has been seen as dumb, useless, downright weak used as a sexual status symbol that is only noticed when it's used to arouse men,I mean we see it on this forum,in some cases,most of us won't notice the women until they have some sort of sex appeal to add to the plot,I myself am guilty of this,not long ago,I was busy sharing my lesbian flicks (old habits die hard) lol. Go down to the front page and see people thrashing anything remotely feminine, feminity is mostly subjective to different countries, cultures and community, watching reality TV or anything focused on true love that's not focused on survival can be regarded as a feminine trait where most men see people watching Zee world,BBnaija etc as less than to boost their masculine ego. We shame feminity looking at it from a physical lens but beneath that lens, it's much stronger than masculinity,most women never weilded a sword or held a gun but they caused and also fought wars. Barbie shows that femininity doesn't exist in a vacuum,it comes in different forms and it's pretty subjective with the diverse barbies

At the end of the day,I think the movie which already has a cult following will have a lot of essayist, authors and intellectuals writing about it in the future,it will be what fight club was for boys

My point has never been to force people to run to cinemas to watch the latest movies. However, if you are running your mouth daily about box office numbers, movie trailers, behind the scenes drama and expert movie reviews etc, you should at least watch some movies in the cinemas.
